Chapter 494: The Partiality of Severus Snape
Chapter 494: The Partiality of Severus Snape
As soon as the storage cabinet was opened, everyone rushed forward as they usually did.
However, at that moment, Severus Snape noticed that some of them were jumping with their legs stiff, as if they were playing a game.
"Mr. Baggins..." Snape, with a cold face, stopped Ryan, who was blocked on the outside but still pushing his way in.
"Don't tell me a fifth-year student like you can't even undo a Leg-Locker Curse... If that's the case, I suggest you go home now. It would be for the best for both you and Hogwarts..."
Before Ryan could respond, Snape waved his wand.
But the next second, Snape froze, as Ryan's legs were still stuck together.
Initially, Snape thought Ryan was pretending, until he walked over and pulled at his legs, only to find that his attempt to undo the curse had no effect.
"What trickery are you lot up to!" Snape's face turned even grimmer, and he brandished his wand again.
A streak of orange light emanated from the tip of his wand, and this time, Ryan's legs were finally freed.
"Ten points from Gryffindor," he said coldly. "If I see you doing such foolish things again, it will be fifty points... "
"Sorry, Professor, but I didn't want this either," Ryan said. "Professor Moody did this in class to test our Protean Charm..."
"Alastor Moody?" Snape's expression stiffened. "Why didn't you say so earlier!"
"You didn't give me a chance to explain," Ryan muttered. "But thank you for releasing me, Professor Snape. Otherwise, I would have had to keep jumping like this all day."
Ryan was quite pleased. Snape's treatment of him was different from how he treated Kyle... Despite being professors, Snape had undone the curse for him, and Professor Moody shouldn't have any complaints about it.
Hehe.
Ryan rubbed his sore legs and turned to squeeze his way towards the storage cabinet.
Snape stood there, his face alternating between red and white. He and Moody were already at odds, and now he had undone Moody's curse... That eccentric old coot would probably think he was challenging him.
Snape watched Ryan's departing figure, hesitating about whether to lock his legs again... But then he realized he didn't know how to cast that particular Leg-Locker Curse.
"Damn it!" Snape cursed inwardly. He should have asked more questions earlier!
What's more, after Ryan's experience, the other students who had been jumping around also gathered around, all of them looking at him expectantly.
"Get back to brewing your potions... Now, immediately!" Snape bellowed. "Before the end of class, I will randomly select someone to drink their own Calming Draught. If anyone makes a mistake in the steps... Heh, I assure you, I will personally reserve the most comfortable bed in the hospital wing for them."
Along with an extremely oppressive atmosphere, the students surrounding him immediately scattered, grumbling in their minds about Snape's partiality, undoing the curse for Ryan but not for anyone else.
On the other side of the classroom, Kyle watched as Snape's face changed colors, his shoulders twitching. It was only when Kona nudged him that he suppressed his smile.
"Ahem, I was just laughing at how Ryan couldn't get a word in earlier. It had nothing to do with Professor Snape... Really!" Kyle explained.
Kona wasn't sure if she believed him, but Kyle seemed convinced by his own excuse, thinking it was quite reasonable.
After the little incident, it was time to brew potions.
As a potion that had been featured multiple times in ordinary wizarding exams, the Calming Draught was one of the most challenging and intricate potions for fifth-year students.
Everything, from the size and quantity of the ingredients to the stirring order, number of stirs, and even the temperature of the flames during boiling, had strict requirements, leaving no room for error.
Then, he began to pace around the classroom.
"Mr. Kettleburn, care to tell me what this is?"
"Mr. Bode, if I were you, I'd reread the third line of the instructions..."
"Stir clockwise three times, not seven..."
Snape's face was filled with disdain as he unsparingly pointed out everyone's mistakes... except for three individuals.
When passing by Kyle and Kona's table, he said nothing and simply walked past, stopping only at Mikkel's cauldron.
If Kyle and Kona's potion was flawless, then Mikkel's was simply beyond his understanding.
The silvery steam was fine, but the ashen-brown substance in the cauldron, resembling melted Bludgers, was something he had never seen before.
However, Snape was accustomed to such occurrences and didn't even bother with sarcasm. He merely said calmly, "As for you... never mind. Five points from Hufflepuff!"
In the final minutes before the end of class, after Snape assigned their homework, Kyle poured the potion from his cauldron into a bottle and corked it.
Mikkel was doing the same, though instead of pouring, he was scraping the sides with a small slicing knife.
Kyle was genuinely worried about him accidentally getting some on his hands, as no one could predict what effects this mysterious potion might have.
Fortunately, Mikkel seemed to have done this before, and not a drop of the potion was spilled.
Just then, the bell rang, signaling the end of class.
The students happily left the classroom, looking forward to the upcoming weekend and their first Hogsmeade trip of the year.
However, when they reached the entrance hall, they found themselves unable to move further, as a large crowd had gathered around the notice board next to the marble staircase.
"Is going to Hogsmeade really that exciting? I don't recall seeing this many people before," Kona said, puzzled.
"No, it's not about Hogsmeade..."
Taking advantage of his height, Kyle peered over the heads of the students in front of him and read the large notice on the bulletin board. He then recited its contents to Kona.
Triwizard Tournament
Representatives from Beauxbatons and Durmstrang will be arriving at 6:00 pm on October 30th. Classes in the afternoon will end half an hour earlier. All students are to assemble in front of the castle to welcome our guests and attend the welcoming banquet.
"The Triwizard Tournament!" Kona exclaimed, realizing what the fuss was about. "I almost forgot about that..."
"Kyle, Kona... I was just about to come and find you."
Cedric squeezed his way out of the crowd, his eyes shining with excitement. "It's just a week away, and I can hardly wait. I really hope I get chosen as a champion..."
"That's a great ambition," Fred and George suddenly chimed in, appearing from who-knows-where.
"But you might be disappointed..." Fred wagged his finger.
George grinned and said, "The champion is sure to be me. You two can just cheer me on from the stands!"
"No, it should be me!" Fred frowned.
"You've still got a long way to go..."
"Ha, full of yourself, aren't you..."
It was quite remarkable how, without saying a word, Kyle and Cedric had somehow managed to instigate an argument between Fred and George, which quickly escalated into a fierce debate, seemingly on the verge of turning into a duel.
Everyone around them watched, seemingly anticipating an entertaining spectacle.
Kyle quietly turned away, feigning ignorance of the twins, and quickly walked toward the Great Hall with Kona.
