Chapter 492: The Contract Magic
Chapter 492: The Contract Magic
The room was so quiet that one could hear a pin drop. Albus Dumbledore stared at Kyle, hesitating several times before speaking.
Initially, he thought Kyle intended to use the Basilisk to destroy the Slytherin pendant, which was why he hadn't said anything and tacitly allowed Kyle to keep it.
However, he had written to Newt, and Kyle hadn't visited the Basilisk even once during the holidays... Moreover, from what Kyle had just said, it seemed that the pendant was still intact.
Albus tapped his fingers on the table and finally spoke, "You've certainly given me a difficult problem. Can you assure me that you won't be influenced by it?"
"I can, Professor," Kyle assured him. "In fact, the Slytherin pendant is an extremely unique existence. As long as it's not opened, there's no harm even if I wear it around my neck."
Although he already knew about it, Albus's lips twitched slightly at the mention of the Slytherin pendant.
The diary had also been a Horcrux, but Kyle had given it away without any hesitation or sentimentality, even discarding it like garbage to Lucius Malfoy.
Now, with the pendant, Kyle wasn't even willing to let him take a look.
Albus understood the reason behind this.
However, he had to admit that he was quite curious about the Slytherin pendant, a treasure renowned alongside the Gryffindor sword.
But since Sirius hadn't objected to Kyle keeping it, he felt it wasn't appropriate for him to ask for it.
"I can agree to your request," Albus said softly. "But you must promise me that you'll destroy it as soon as possible. And I must remind you not to do anything foolish. Even the most precious treasure will lose its luster once tainted by dark magic. It's not worth risking your life for it."
"I promise," Kyle smiled.
There was no doubt that he didn't plan to use the pendant before dealing with Voldemort's soul fragment. That thing, like the crown before, remained locked away in a box.
But at that moment, Kyle seemed to have thought of something. He glanced at Albus and continued, "Professor, I think we should set up a contract magic."
"What?" Albus was a little confused by what he meant.
"It's a type of restrictive magic," Kyle explained. "For example, if I ever have the intention to use a Horcrux, I would be directly stopped. I think you're familiar with this kind of magic, right?"
"Ah, I do know a few such curses..." Albus said, "But there's no need for that, Kyle. I trust you completely, just as I trust myself."
"No, I just feel that it's safer this way," Kyle insisted. "And it's like adding an extra layer of insurance. If I ever get bewitched by a Horcrux, this magic might even save my life."
Bewitched by a Horcrux? Albus thought about it and felt that Kyle's words made sense. After all, Horcruxes were too mysterious, and even he didn't know much about them. Adding an extra layer of protection wouldn't hurt.
"If you insist... then get your wand ready."
Kyle took out his wand and extended his arm as Albus had instructed.
Albus stood in front of Kyle and did the same, bringing the tips of their wands together.
"Wait a moment, Professor," Kyle said suddenly.
"Is there another issue? If you don't want to continue, we can stop now," Albus said, assuming that Kyle had changed his mind. He proactively broke the connection between their wands.
"No, Professor," Kyle said, "I just feel that since it's a contract magic, it's only fair if both parties abide by it, right?"
"Then you..."
"No problem, a bilateral contract spell will work on me as well."
Although Kyle's actions today were a bit odd, Dumbledore didn't mind.
After all, he himself had no intention of using any Horcruxes, so he readily agreed...
It wouldn't have any impact anyway, so he treated it as a game for the child.
"Get ready, and don't resist."
As the two wands touched once more, Dumbledore murmured a lengthy incantation, seemingly setting the terms of the spell.
It took quite a while, about two minutes, before he finished. When he was done, a golden thread emerged from where their wands met.
The thread wafted in the air, splitting into two halves that drifted along their wands and onto their wrists, forming a delicate bracelet-like circle.
The next second, Kyle felt a searing pain on his wrist, but it vanished as quickly as it had appeared.
When he looked again, there was now a symbol composed of golden magical runes.
The runes were tiny, and before Kyle could make out their meaning, they vanished as if they had never been there.
Kyle flexed his wrist, feeling no discomfort.
"There," Dumbledore said with a smile, "don't worry, it won't affect you in any way, and you can come to me to release this constraint at any time."
"Can't I release it myself?" Kyle asked. "With the Spell of Omnipotence?"
"No," Dumbledore explained, "contract magic is different from the spells we usually use. Whether it's to cast or release, both parties involved in the magic must be present together."
Kyle nodded, glancing at his wrist again.
"You might find me a bit nagging," Dumbledore put away his wand, "but I still want to advise you to destroy it as soon as possible.
"I do have some achievements in alchemy, perhaps I can help repair the damaged Slytherin pendant box... Of course, on the premise that you don't use the Blasting Curse."
"I will, as soon as possible," Kyle replied.
He didn't give a specific time frame because it depended on when Nicolas Flamel's letter would arrive... that is, if he didn't run off with the crown.
Just then, Kyle suddenly caught a whiff of grilled meat. At some point, a sumptuous lunch had appeared on the table behind Dumbledore, including the headmaster's favorite honey-glazed meat rack.
"Oh, my favorite honey-glazed meat rack is on the menu today..." Dumbledore said delightedly, "Shall I ask the house-elves in the kitchen to prepare a portion for you, or would you prefer to have lunch with your friends?"
"No need, Professor, I'll just head to the Great Hall," Kyle said hurriedly as he turned and rushed out the door.
Dumbledore sat down at the table, his thoughts turning once more to the Slytherin pendant box...
The fact that it was something left behind by Salazar Slytherin made him itch to get his hands on it; this was a natural reaction for an alchemy enthusiast.
No, he had to find a way to borrow... er, research that item for a few days, but what excuse could he use? Kyle wasn't easily fooled...
Dumbledore stared at the honey-glazed meat rack, lost in thought.
What if... he traded it for Fawkes' feather?
A certain phoenix, who had been dozing on a branch, suddenly woke up, shook its feathers, and eyed its surroundings suspiciously.
...
