Chapter 490: Who's the Real Mentor? (Deep and Infinite Alliance Leader adds more, 25)
Neville had always thought that Harry only had an aunt and uncle, and he had mentioned before that these two relatives treated him poorly and even refused to sign his Hogsmeade forms.
Now, to suddenly hear that Harry also had a godfather was far more shocking than the revelation of Kyle appearing in the Gryffindor common room.
"You have a godfather?" Neville exclaimed in surprise. "Why haven't you mentioned him before?"
"I just found out myself," Harry laughed as he stuffed candies into Neville's pockets.
Previously, he couldn't reveal anything due to Sirius' situation, so he had kept it a secret from everyone.
But things were different now. Sirius had been declared innocent during the retrial, and Harry could finally share this wonderful news with everyone openly.
However, Harry didn't get carried away. Since he had only heard about it and hadn't seen the newspaper or a letter himself, he intentionally refrained from mentioning Sirius' name.
Seeing Harry's excitement, Hermione was happy for him. She knew how much Harry had longed for this day.
But... she lowered her head, as if deep in thought about something.
Soon, Harry returned and placed the candy bucket, now half-empty, on the table. He then stared out the window, and every time an owl flew by, he would stand up eagerly, only to look disappointed when it flew away.
"Don't you find it strange?" Hermione asked suddenly.
"What's strange?" Harry replied absentmindedly, still staring out the window.
"I'm talking about Kyle," Hermione said.
Ron, fiddling with his new quill, asked, "What about him?"
"Don't you two find it odd?" Hermione gave them a disdainful look. "How did Kyle know that Sirius Black was acquitted?"
"The newspaper, of course," Ron said matter-of-factly. "Didn't he say that because of this, the Prophet printed an extra edition?"
"Then what about all this?"
Hermione pointed to the golden crucible on the table. "Obviously, Sirius bought these in Diagon Alley. Have you ever thought about why he didn't just send them directly by owl but went through the trouble of asking Kyle to deliver them instead..."
Ron looked up, and Harry stopped staring out the window.
That was true. Now that they thought about it, why would Sirius ask Kyle to deliver something meant for Harry?
Could Sirius have written the address wrong? But they were all at Hogwarts.
"Don't you understand yet?" Hermione closed her homework in annoyance, looking at the confused pair. "It's simple. I'd bet that Kyle was with Sirius at the time and was also in Diagon Alley!"
"What?" Ron exclaimed in disbelief. "But that's impossible... I mean, there's no Hogwarts Express on the weekends. How did he get back?"
"He probably found another way," Hermione said. "Also, do you remember that during lunch today, Professor Dumbledore went to the Great Hall and called Kyle away? He just got back now."
"You mean..." Harry frowned. "He already knew about Sirius' retrial at that time and went outside the school to find him?"
"I think so..."
The three fell silent, perplexed as to why Dumbledore would inform Kyle about this matter.
Harry felt a lump in his throat. He was Sirius' godson, yet he was the last to know...
"Ouch!
Hermione and Ron leaned in curiously.
Meanwhile, the news of Sirius Black's acquittal spread like wildfire through Hogwarts via the Prophet, and those who subscribed to the newspaper eagerly shared the latest development with their peers. The entire school was abuzz with this revelation, even overshadowing the Triwizard Tournament for the moment.
After all, what could be more captivating than a story of a man wrongfully imprisoned in Azkaban for twelve long years, biding his time to seek revenge? For the teenagers at Hogwarts, filled with youthful vigor and curiosity, this was the epitome of thrilling.
By dinnertime, the Great Hall resonated with chatter about Sirius Black. Fred and George, too, had momentarily forgotten about the chest, choosing instead to crowd around Harry, eager for any additional details he could provide.
In his excitement upon receiving the letter, Harry had let it slip that Sirius was his godfather, and now most of Gryffindor knew.
His housemates bombarded him with questions, desperate for any morsel of information beyond what the newspaper had disclosed.
Those who couldn't squeeze their way into the inner circle could only speculate from a distance.
"I bet Black did it on purpose..." A Hufflepuff student named Michael asserted confidently, "He chose to be imprisoned in Azkaban, enduring those soul-sucking monsters, just so he could get his revenge on the Death Eaters inside."
"That seems far-fetched," someone else countered, "Even Black wouldn't be able to kill Death Eaters at will with all those Dementors around."
"That's why it took him twelve years," Michael insisted, "And let's not forget, he's the first person to ever escape from there. He must have found a way to deal with the Dementors."
Surprisingly, several students nodded in agreement with Michael's theory.
If he could escape, he must have a way to handle the Dementors... It made sense.
"Just imagine, after he finishes off all the Death Eaters, he'll come out, clear his name, and expose the real traitor... Now that's impressive." Michael continued, his eyes sparkling with admiration, "I wish Professor Dumbledore would invite him to teach Defense Against the Dark Arts.
"Not that I'm saying Professor Moody isn't good," he quickly added, "I'm just saying, maybe next year..."
The curse of the Defense Against the Dark Arts position at Hogwarts was well-known, with five different professors in as many years, and not one of them lasting longer.
So, even a legendary Auror like Moody didn't inspire much confidence... Look what happened to Lockhart, a celebrity and a member of the Order of the Merlin; he ended up just the same.
The students chattered excitedly about Sirius Black, and the staff table wasn't much different.
Dumbledore had kept the matter confidential, and aside from a select few, most of the professors were only learning about it now.
Hagrid, for his part, had been staring blankly at a copy of the Prophet for half an hour, his mind in a muddle.
He had, in the past, spoken ill of Sirius Black on more than one occasion, even going so far as to say that if he ever caught Black, he'd beat him senseless and turn him into a Flobberworm.
And now, suddenly, the truth had turned on its head, revealing Black's innocence and pointing to another betrayer.
Well, he certainly couldn't beat Black senseless now, but he wasn't too keen on becoming a Flobberworm either.
"Blimey, what am I gonna do now?" Hagrid muttered, his brain in a tangle.
