Chapter 490: Who is the Godfather?
Chapter 490: Who is the Godfather?
Neville had always assumed that Harry only had his aunt and uncle, and they had treated him poorly, even refusing to sign his application to visit Hogsmeade.
Now, hearing that Harry had a godfather came as a shock, even more surprising than Kyle's appearance in the Gryffindor common room.
"You have a godfather?" Neville exclaimed in surprise. "Why have I never heard you mention him before?"
"I just found out myself," Harry smiled, stuffing candies into Neville's pockets.
Previously, he couldn't reveal the truth due to Sirius' identity, keeping it hidden from everyone.
But now, things were different. Sirius had been declared innocent during the retrial, and he could finally share the good news openly.
However, Harry didn't get carried away, as he had only heard about it and hadn't seen the newspaper or the letter. So, he intentionally avoided mentioning Sirius' name.
Watching Harry's excitement, Hermione was happy for him, knowing how much he had longed for this day.
But... She lowered her head, deep in thought.
Soon, Harry returned, placing the half-empty candy bucket on the table and staring blankly out the window. Every time an owl flew by, he would stand up eagerly, only to sit back down with disappointment when they flew away.
"Don't you find this strange?" Hermione suddenly asked.
"What's strange?" Harry replied absentmindedly, still gazing out the window.
"Of course it's Kyle," Hermione said.
Ron, playing with his new quill, asked, "What about him?"
"Don't you two notice anything?" Hermione looked at them with disdain. "How does Kyle know that Sirius has been acquitted?"
"It's the newspaper, of course," Ron said matter-of-factly. "Didn't he say that because of this, the Daily Prophet printed an extra edition?"
"Then what about these?"
Hermione pointed to the golden crucible on the table. "Obviously, Sirius bought these in Diagon Alley. Don't you think it's odd that if he wanted to give them to Harry, he didn't send them directly by owl but went through the trouble of having Kyle deliver them..."
Ron looked up, and Harry stopped staring out the window.
That's right, they realized. Since it was for Harry, why did Kyle have to deliver it?
Could Sirius have written the wrong address? But they were all at Hogwarts.
"Don't you understand?" Hermione closed her book in annoyance, looking at their confused faces. "It's simple. I bet Kyle was with Sirius in Diagon Alley!"
"What?" Ron exclaimed in disbelief. "But that's impossible... I mean, there's no Hogwarts Express on weekends. How did he get back?"
"There must be some other way," Hermione said. "Also, do you remember that during lunch today, Professor Dumbledore went to the Great Hall and called Kyle away, and he only returned just now?"
"You mean..." Harry frowned. "By then, he already knew about Sirius' retrial and went outside the school to find him?"
"I think so..."
The three fell silent, puzzled as to why Dumbledore would tell Kyle about this.
Harry felt a lump in his throat. He was Sirius' godson, yet he was the last to know...
"Ouch!"
Lost in thought, Harry suddenly felt a stinging pain in his hand. He looked down and saw a tiny owl, the size of a Snitch, pecking at his hand, with a letter beside it.
"Oh, Sirius has written!" he exclaimed excitedly, tearing open the envelope.
Hermione and Ron also gathered around, curious to know more.
Meanwhile, the news of Sirius Black's exoneration spread quickly through Hogwarts via the Daily Prophet. Students who had subscribed to the newspaper eagerly shared the news with others, and now everyone was discussing it, even overshadowing the Triwizard Tournament.
Could there be a more legendary experience than spending twelve years in Azkaban, solely for the chance of revenge?
The students at Hogwarts, mostly in their teens, were at their most passionate age, and this was the kind of story they loved the most.
By dinnertime, almost every student in the Great Hall was discussing the matter. Fred and George, too, had forgotten about the boxes and were huddled around Harry, eagerly seeking any additional information beyond what the newspaper had reported.
Harry, in his excitement after receiving the letter, had let slip that Sirius was his godfather, and now almost everyone in Gryffindor knew.
They were eager to hear more from him, but due to the crowd, they couldn't get close.
"I bet Sirius did it on purpose..." Mikael insisted at the Hufflepuff table, "He'd rather give up his freedom and willingly stay in Azkaban just to kill the Death Eaters inside."
"That would be difficult," someone countered, "With the presence of Boggarts, even Sirius wouldn't be able to casually kill the Death Eaters in there."
"That's why it took him twelve years," Mikael replied, "And don't forget, he's the first person to successfully escape from there. He must have a way to deal with Boggarts."
Surprisingly, many others agreed with his statement.
If he could escape, he must have a way to deal with Boggarts... It made sense.
"After he kills all the Death Eaters, he'll come out and expose the real culprit, clearing his name... I have to say, he's truly remarkable."
Mikael continued, his eyes gleaming with excitement, "If only Professor Dumbledore could invite him to teach Defense Against the Dark Arts."
"Of course, I'm not saying Professor Moody is bad, but I mean, next year..."
The curse of the Hogwarts Defense Against the Dark Arts professor was deeply ingrained in the students' minds. In five years, they had gone through five different professors, and not a single one had lasted for more than a year.
So, even a legendary Auror didn't give them much hope... Lockhart's fame was comparable to Moody's, and he was a member of the Order of Merlin, but he still failed, didn't he?
The students were buzzing with discussions about Sirius Black, and the teachers were no different.
Professor Dumbledore's secrecy was impeccable; no one had leaked the information, except for a few individuals. Most of the professors had only learned about it that day.
Hagrid had been staring at a newspaper, lost in thought for half an hour.
He had cursed Sirius Black on numerous occasions, even vowing to beat him up if he ever caught him and make him regurgitate his dinner, or else he'd be a Filbert worm.
But now, the situation had suddenly turned around. Sirius was innocent, and the betrayer was someone else.
He couldn't beat Sirius up and make him regurgitate his dinner now, but he didn't want to be a Filbert worm either.
"What am I supposed to do now..." Hagrid felt his mind going haywire.
