Chapter 49: The City of Forgotten Souls
Chapter 49: The City of Forgotten Souls
Pit Two.
The dense shadow energy condensed into a black mist, one end reaching the sky, the other touching the ground.
The shadow energy roared, sweeping through the surroundings.
Three heavily armored figures stood at the edge, their bodies emitting a faint glow, resisting the shadow energy's corrosion, remaining steadfast amidst the raging wind.
They were the pillars of the city guard, the nominal rulers of Black City, the captain of the city guard knights.
Through the dense shadow energy, a broken city could be seen at the bottom of the pit.
The city resembled a behemothat had been wounded and aged, yet its grandeur had not diminished.
"The City of Forgotten Souls."
The chief of the city guard, Hal, muttered:
"I didn't expect there to really be a City of Forgotten Souls here."
"Before thefall of the Moon Goddess, there were many cities built to worship her," the lieutenant, Bernard, said:
"Unending treasures and boundless wisdom can be found within. With the goddess’s blessing, one can enter the Divine Realm and achieve eternal life."
His voice was full of envy.
"Hmph!"
Hal sneered:
"Even deities can fall, what eternal life?"
"But the City of forgotten souls surely hides many treasures, so we can't miss it."
He then waved his hand:
"Let the miners in!"
"Yes."
The lieutenant nodded, signaling to his men, and over a hundred ragged miners were herded in.
"Move!"
"Quickly!"
"Snap!"
Fully armed city guard soldiers, wielding long whips, lashed and drove the miners forward.
In an instant.
The miners, forced into the dense black mist, were instinctively overwhelmed by the shadow energy, their cries of despair and anguish quickly following.
Visible to the naked eye.
The miners' flesh began to wither, their eyes turning blood red, the vital signs of life fading, replaced by a fierce and malevolent aura.
"Release!"
Hal's face was grim as he waved his hand lightly.
"Crumble!"
"Whoosh..."
The bowstrings behind them trembled, countless burning arrows rained from the sky, falling into the crowd of miners.
Immediately after.
Fiery flames engulfed the entire area.
The miners screamed and fell one after another, eventually turning to ashes in the raging flames, scattered by the shadow wind, leaving no trace.
If one observed closely, the black mist gathered by the shadow wind seemed to have thinned slightly, and the city within became more visible.
"Not enough."
Hal's expression was emotionless:
"Far from enough!"
"Chief," Lieutenant Bernard whispered:
"Miners are few, if this continues, it might provoke the people below."
"Provocation?" Hal's eyes showed disdain, but he did not insist:
"How long until the slaves arrive?"
"Madam says two months, we need a large quantity, and time is required to purchase, the speed can't be increased," Bernard replied.
"One month!"
Hal grunted:
"Tell her, I want to see enough slaves within a month, as for the price... it can be raised."
"Yes."
Bernard nodded, adding:
"There's one more thing, a few strange giant spirits escaped from the City of Forgotten Souls a few days ago, it might cause trouble for the people above."
"Do we need to take action?"
"No." Hal's brows furrowed:
"If this can't be solved, what use are they?"
"Also..."
"Send those who meet the requirements down as well. The stronger they are, the more shadow energy they consume, allowing us to enter the City of Forgotten Souls sooner."
"Yes." Bernard acknowledged.
As they conversed, they had already decided on the major matters of the Black City, as if Hal were the city lord, or the so-called 'm ysterious city lord ' didn't exist.
Everyone had clear responsibilities.
Aya led the way, attracting targets, while Karl positioned himself in the center of the group as the main firepower, ready to provide support at any moment.
The sweep began from the outskirts of the stronghold and gradually advanced into the city.
"Be careful!"
As they moved forward, Dana's eyes narrowed.
"It's a pack of Mound Wolves!"
Once the Mound Wolves gathered in a pack, there were at least four of them, including a larger Alpha Wolf.
Some of the Alpha Wolves had even activated their Special Heritage, a trait of Beasts.
"Slowly back away, don't panic."
Xiaonan's injuries had mostly healed, and at this moment, she held a shield and slowly retreated backward.
The pack of wolves in the corner of the ruins whined, one after another, pausing their feasting on flesh and blood, and turned to look at them.
Their cold, ferocious green eyes were especially striking in the darkness.
"Hooowl!"
With a wolf's howl, three Mound Wolves took the lead in launching an attack.
Two more Mound Wolves hid in the darkness, circling around their front, attempting to launch a surprise attack from the side.
These Mound Wolves even understood some basic tactics.
"Retreat!"
Xiaonan shouted in a low voice:
"Lure them back."
"Hausman, hold your shield tightly, don't think about attacking. Just lead them out."
The three each held a shield, backing up to each other, using the shields to protect themselves as they slowly retreated.
From a distance, the three of them looked like they were enveloped by a giant turtle shell, and the regular Mound Wolves' charges were not enough to break through their defense.
"Hooowl!"
The Alpha Wolf let out a low growl, seeming somewhat impatient, and with a quick flash, it charged out of the darkness, slamming into Dana's shield.
"Bang!"
The immense force of the collision caused Dana to grunt, and her arms holding the shield went numb, almost losing all sensation.
Just at that moment—
"Swoosh!"
"Swoosh swoosh!"
Several arrows shot forth, rushing towards the pack of wolves.
Among them were two fireballs, flying straight towards the Alpha Wolf.
"Pfft!"
The arrows pierced the bodies of the Mound Wolves.
"Boom!"
The fireballs exploded, flipping the Alpha Wolf onto the ground, and the flames further engulfed the Mound Wolves surrounding the Alpha Wolf.
"Go!"
Karl waved his hand, brandishing his broadsword and charging towards the Alpha Wolf that was struggling to get up.
Lesser Force Field!
Eagle Step!
Furious Strike!
Even when a lion hunts a rabbit, it uses its full strength. Karl dared not be careless, and with his broadsword, he fiercely slashed at the Alpha Wolf.
Slash!
Slash!
Gale Slash!
The howling sword shadow swept by, and the sound of the blade shattering bones kept ringing out, and the Alpha Wolf was also blasted away by the force.
After landing, it was completely devoid of breath.
On the other side, things ended quickly as well. Aya and the other six surrounded the injured pack of wolves, attacking with arrows and heavy axes.
In no time, the pack of wolves became a pile of corpses.
Aya skillfully dissected the bodies:
"Every Mound Wolf has a Nameless Tooth. With this, we can get a good price from the City Guard."
"Hmm..."
"The meat on the Mound Wolves is heavily infused with Shadow Energy. There's not much edible meat, otherwise, just the meat alone could fetch a good price."
"Big Sis." Dana called out from a distance.
"Come and see this!"
"What is it?"
Aya paused her work and walked over with Karl.
In the corner of the ruins, there were several corpses with blood and flesh smeared all over them. The pack of wolves had likely been feasting on these corpses' flesh and blood.
"Hmm..."
Karl squatted down, flipping through the broken bodies, his expression turning solemn:
"There are slashes on their clothes made by sharp blades. It wasn't the wolf pack that killed them, but humans."
"No wonder!"
Dana lightly patted her forehead:
"No wonder they didn't leave behind anything valuable. It seems they were looted by others."
Being in Black City, they had witnessed many battles, and it wasn't surprising sight. Greed and selfishness were common among people.
"Let's go."
Karl stood up:
"Good things will inevitably attract attention. But with our numbers, I believe no one would dare to provoke us."
Hearing this, the others couldn't help but smile.
Indeed.
With their group of seven, plus Karl, a 'Great Master', as long as they didn't go looking for trouble, everything would be fine.
