Chapter 49: Arrival in Iceland and a New Guest
Chapter 49: Arrival in Iceland and a New Guest
After a two-day journey at sea, the ship finally arrived at Reykjavik, the largest port and capital of Iceland.
Standing on the deck, Liam noticed that the city was nestled between the mountains and the sea, with their ship sailing eastward into Reykjavik’s harbor. It was morning, and the rising sun cast a vibrant purple hue over the nearby peaks.
The most striking feature of this place was the clear blue sky. With minimal industrial activity, the city relies on eco-friendly geothermal energy for heating, thanks to the abundant geothermal resources in the area. The name "Reykjavik" in Icelandic means "smoky city", a reference to the steam rising from the geothermal vents.
After disembarking, Liam’s family headed straight to the hotel they had booked in advance to rest. Despite having its own language, Icelanders speak excellent English due to the long-term presence of American troops, making communication smooth.
After settling into the hotel and dropping off their luggage, Mr. Lambert decided to rest for a while. Liam, however, asked for permission to explore the Wizard Commercial Street. Considering the good security conditions in Iceland during the early 1990s and the size of Reykjavik, as well as the fact that Liam was already a wizard, Mr. Lambert agreed. He gave Liam the equivalent of 150 pounds in Icelandic króna and instructed him to return by noon.
Liam agreed and left the hotel, taking a taxi to the city center. It didn’t take long, as Reykjavik is a small city with a population of around 100,000 and a compact urban area.
Using the guide map and information from the Seven Stars Inn, Liam found the entrance to the Wizard Commercial District: a five-story building with a sign that read "Aurora Inn." Guests were coming and going through its doors.
Liam walked around to the side of the inn, where a decorative panel featuring a Viking longship was carved. He took out his wand and tapped the third shield from the left on the longship’s carving five times. A brick archway appeared beside the carving.
Just as Liam was about to enter, he received a message from the System, informing him that a new guest had entered the Multiverse General Store.
With no choice, he hurried a few steps around the corner to a deserted alley. After checking to ensure it was safe, he entered the emporium.
Inside the emporium, Liam first checked the Fire Dragon Grass displayed on the table. This particular Fire Dragon Grass was different from the ordinary variety. The dragon’s head that usually grew at the top of the plant was missing, replaced by a football-sized red fruit.
This was a new plant that Liam had cultivated after the start of his summer vacation. After mastering Crazy Dave’s techniques, Liam used the Fire Dragon Grass as a base and combined it with Norbert’s eggshell fragments, scales, blood, and poison fangs (thanks to Ron’s finger for the contribution), as well as the Devil’s Vine he had obtained during the final level.
The plant contained so many magical components that it was unlike anything Dave had ever encountered in his plant breeding. Liam had to experiment and rely on the occasional advice from Professor Sprout. There were countless elements that required luck, but fortunately, Liam’s luck held out. The plant successfully grew, and now it was a matter of waiting to see what would sprout from the seeds inside the fruit.
After observing the Plants, Liam instructed the shop to let the new guests in. With the sound of footsteps, the guests entered the emporium, and Liam's eyes widened in surprise.
Because this time, the guests were not one, but two.
The one in front was a man who looked to be in his thirties or forties, dressed in a grand naval uniform from the Age of Exploration, the kind Liam had seen in many European historical films. However, his face bore the marks of hardship, suggesting he had endured a lot in the past. Upon seeing Liam, he slightly bent his knees, adopting a defensive stance to protect the person behind him.
The person behind him was a girl, wearing a blue dress and looking to be around eleven or twelve years old, about Liam's age.
"Sir, please relax. I mean you no harm", Liam said. "This is the Multiverse General Store, and I am Shopkeeper Liam. Every guest who comes here is here to solve their biggest problem. So, could you tell me about the problem you're facing? I might be able to help you."
Perhaps the man realized that the person sitting behind the counter was just a child, and not a threat, so he relaxed his stance.
Then, he and the girl sat down on the floor, watching in amazement as Liam emerged from behind the counter and pulled out a large tablecloth from a small bag. He then produced a bottle of whisky (which he had found in the storage room, probably forgotten by his father), a jug of juice, and three glasses. (Liam always felt that since he had a Spatial Bag, it should be filled to the brim, so he had packed it with all sorts of items.)
After Liam poured a glass of whisky for the middle-aged man, he took a sip and began to tell his story. "My name is Edward, Edward Kenway. I was once a captain, but now I'm retired and want to raise my daughter."
He pointed to the girl sitting quietly beside him, sipping juice. "This is my daughter, Jennifer Scott. In my pursuit of wealth, I neglected her and her mother. Now, I only wish to raise my daughter in peace."
Liam couldn't recall this name from his memory, but considering the countless worlds out there, it was normal that he wouldn't recognize everyone. So, he smiled and turned his attention to the girl, who was about his age.
Noticing Liam's gaze, the girl moved closer to her father. Liam turned to Kenvi and said, "She seems to struggle with social interaction."
"Indeed", Kenvi replied. "As a captain, I made many enemies, so I had to keep our whereabouts hidden. She has had very little contact with others."
"So, what you need is..."
"A completely unfamiliar place, somewhere no one can find us, a place where I can raise my daughter in peace", Kenvi said to Liam.
"Could you tell me more about your world? That way, I can determine which world would suit your needs", Liam said. "You can see that I'm not from your world, so you don't have to worry about me revealing your secrets to anyone you know."
To prove his point, Liam drew his wand and cast a Lumos spell, then conjured a stream of Clear Water from the tip of his wand.
"As you can see, I am a Wizard. Your world probably doesn't have people like me, right?"
"Um, you're a bit like the Precursors in our world, but you're quite different", Kenvi replied.
"Precursors?" Liam said, indicating that he didn't fully understand the term.
