Chapter 481: Mixed Feelings
Chapter 481: Mixed Feelings
Su Hexuan already had plans for this sum of money: "My neighbor happens to be selling his house, and now that I've made this profit, I can afford to buy it."
"Are you buying it for Su Heming?"
Su Hexuan nodded; it would be convenient for the two brothers to live together and look after each other. More importantly, by living next to each other, their father would be able to see both his sons anytime he wanted.
Lu Jiaxin, aware of his intention to take care of Su Heming, was not surprised by this: "So, you and Miss Hu are officially a couple now. When are you planning to get engaged?"
Su Hexuan replied happily: "As soon as I close my position, I'll go to her family and propose."
Marrying into the Hu family would require a substantial betrothal gift. He had been somewhat worried about this before, but now he felt confident.
Lu Jiaxin said, "The laws in Hong Kong are different from those in the mainland. Here, a couple's property remains separate even after marriage. If you're willing, you could offer a portion of your shares as a betrothal gift. This would show the Hu family your sincerity and ensure a smooth path to winning your beloved."
Although Hu Huihui had an ordinary appearance, her family background was excellent, and many sought to marry her, for with her, one would never need to struggle in life. The Hu family's agreement to let Hu Huihui date Su Hexuan was based on three factors: Su Hexuan's capability and good looks, his family's wealth, and his solid connections in the mainland. As they intended to expand their business into the mainland, these connections would prove invaluable.
Su Hexuan shared this idea: "What do you think of offering 3% of the shares?"
Lu Jiaxin thought it was sufficient. Of course, in addition to these shares, other gifts would be expected. Given the Hu family's status, a betrothal gift worth hundreds of millions would be appropriate. With his 40 million capital, the fourfold profit of 160 million could easily be used to buy a luxurious house and prepare the betrothal gift.
Su Hexuan smiled and said, "Alright, then 3% of the shares it is. As for the other gifts, could you help me ask Hu's grandmother about her expectations? That way, I'll have a better idea."
Lu Jiaxin replied, "Sure, I'll ask her the next time I see her."
Zong Simeng had sold all her stocks because of Lu Jiaxin's reminder, and she now owed her a big favor. Such a small request would surely be granted. Moreover, Su Hexuan's betrothal gift was quite respectable, and it would also reflect well on the Hu family.
Just as Su Hexuan was about to speak, his phone rang.
It was Zong Simeng calling. After hearing Lu Jiaxin's voice, she expressed her gratitude: "Jiaxin, thank you so much for your reminder. Otherwise, my losses would have been devastating."
According to her husband's prediction, the stock market would continue to fall, and the decline would be even more significant than today's. Fortunately, thanks to Jiaxin's reminder, she had closed her positions last week, or she might have lost her entire investment.
Lu Jiaxin smiled and said, "You're too kind. It's also because you were willing to trust me and Ah Zhan. Otherwise, my words would have been useless."
Zong Simeng replied in a cheerful tone, "After the market closes this afternoon, I'll call my husband and suggest that we sell all our stocks."
The Hu family had their hands in many industries, and financial investment was only a small part of their portfolio. Thus, the stock market crash wouldn't significantly impact them. However, everyone wanted more wealth, and Hu Zhifeng's hesitation had already cost them tens of millions.
"Don't worry, the market will recover," Lu Jiaxin assured her.
Zong Simeng laughed and said, "Jiaxin, do you have time this weekend? Hermes and LV have launched new collections. Let's go check them out if you're free."
Lu Jiaxin had helped her avoid a massive loss, so she wanted to express her gratitude.
Lu Jiaxin replied, "I've been busy with school activities lately, and I'm not sure about my schedule for the weekend. Sister Simeng, I'll give you a final answer by Friday, okay?"
Zong Simeng agreed happily: "My husband is back, and we can discuss this the next time we meet."
After Lu Jiaxin hung up the phone, Su Hexuan commented, "Mrs. Hu is much older than you, yet you two get along so well."
In the past, he had thought that Lu Jiaxin, who often stayed at home, needed to socialize more. Unexpectedly, she had quietly made quite a few friends.
Lu Jiaxin thought to herself, "It's natural for me to get along with Sister Simeng since I was about her age in my previous life." She then replied, "Whether or not people can get along depends not on age, but on personality and interests. Sister Simeng has a pleasant personality, and our hobbies are similar, so we became friends."
Zong Simeng was friendly and tactful, always considering the feelings of those around her. It was comfortable to interact with such a person. Of course, the most important thing was that she wasn't pretentious or snobbish, unlike some wealthy young ladies who looked down on those less fortunate than themselves.
Su Hexuan continued to chat with Lu Jiaxin about family matters. "Did you know that your father was hit and is now recuperating at home?"
Lu Jiaxin nodded and then explained the situation with Lu Shan's adoption. "I know. It was my second cousin's family who caused this mess. It had nothing to do with him, yet at his age, he still wanted to be stubborn. Now he's bedridden and needs someone to take care of him all day. After this lesson, he'll hopefully behave from now on."
This time, Lu Hongjun's medical expenses and the cost of his caregiver were all covered by the Peng family. Since they didn't have the money, they said they would deduct it from the compensation for Peng Xiangye. This caused another uproar, but Lu Jiaxin didn't get involved.
Su Hexuan felt that they were being unreasonable. "Since Lu Shan has been adopted into your branch of the family, they should have at least consulted you and your father about such a big decision."
Lu Jiaxin replied, "I know that my father and I would never have agreed, so they wanted to force Lu Shan and Da Mai to consent first. If the biological parents agreed, we wouldn't have a leg to stand on to oppose it. But what they didn't expect was that Lu Shan and his wife flatly refused."
Although it was what he should have done, Lu Shan had always been obedient. His parents had never let him turn east if they said to go west, so it was quite unexpected and refreshing to see him defy the Lu family's wishes.
Su Hexuan cautioned, "You need to be careful around the Lu family... Jiaxin, you need to be more vigilant. Sometimes, relatives can scheme more ruthlessly than outsiders."
Lu Jiaxin smiled and assured him, "Don't worry, I know what I'm doing."
Among the younger generation of the Lu family, those who excelled in their studies would be supported financially, even if they wanted to study abroad. As for the others, she would simply ignore them. After all, only Lu Jia Guang and Lu Jia Jie had shown kindness to her past self, and she had already reciprocated in kind.
Thinking of Lu Jiajie, Lu Jiaxin frowned involuntarily. Lu Jiajie and that person with the surname Leng had gone to the capital of a foreign country and stayed there for a week. Then, they went missing at the border. The people she sent to look for them couldn't find any trace, and she didn't know what had happened.
The two of them were having dinner when they suddenly heard the sound of a car outside. Su Hexuan smiled and said, "Nie Zhan said he had something to do and would be back late, so it looks like his business is going well today."
"That's not Zhan's car. It's someone else's," Lu Jiaxin said. Over time, she had become familiar with the sound of Nie Zhan's car.
"Okay."
Lu Jiaxin was startled to see Shi Xinyu, who looked like she had been crying her eyes out. She quickly pulled her into the house and asked what had happened after they were seated.
Shi Xinyu sobbed as she explained, "The stock market crashed today. I blamed Ah Yong for not selling the stocks earlier. If it weren't for him saying that the market was doing well, I would have sold them already. Instead of apologizing, he yelled at me. It's clearly his fault, yet he dared to shout at me."
Her pitiful appearance tugged at one's heartstrings.
However, Su Hexuan had no intention of being gentle or chivalrous. He quickly finished his meal, bid Lu Jiaxin farewell, and left.
