Chapter 48: The Top Ten Challenge
Chapter 48: The Top Ten Challenge (Please Keep Reading)
Two more days passed.
That morning, just minutes before Martial Arts class, every single member of the Elite Class unusually arrived in the classroom.
"Something's up today—Teacher Zhang said he has an important announcement and wants everyone here."
The students chatted idly, eventually circling back to contract discussions.
"Li Zhou still hasn't signed an A-Rank contract yet. They say the three major Martial Arts Pavilions are waiting to see his Midterm Evaluation performance."
"Right now, fewer than five people across Tianhai City have secured A-Rank contracts."
"Wow, that strict? Even Li Zhou isn't qualified yet?" The group gasped in unison.
The harsh reality of A-Rank contracts sobered everyone.
Suddenly, a muscular 6'2" figure materialized beside Jiang Tao. His sharp features and wind-like agility earned him his nickname—Storm Rain Spear.
"Jiang Tao, why haven't you signed a contract yet?" Qiu Jie asked curiously, catching Jiang Tao mid-sip.
Jiang Tao glanced at Lin Qi nearby. "I'm waiting for Brother Qi. When he signs, I'll follow."
Qiu Jie shook his head. "Never understood why you call Lin Qi 'big brother.' You're clearly stronger than him."
"He doesn't deserve that respect!"
"Actually", Qiu Jie grinned, "you could just call me 'Brother Qiu' or 'Brother Jie' too."
Jiang Tao's expression darkened. "Mind your own damn business. Beat it."
"Hey, chill—just kidding!" Qiu Jie raised his hands in mock surrender before walking away.
Lin Qi approached, clapping Jiang Tao's shoulder. "That guy needs his mouth sewn shut", Jiang Tao muttered.
Lin Qi narrowed his eyes at Qiu Jie's retreating form.
Ding Ding Ding!
The school bell echoed as Zhang Cheng strode in, his broad frame radiating authority. His gaze lingered on top students like Li Zhou, Yu Jing, and Qi Yuelin.
"I've gathered you all for an announcement", Zhang bellowed, silencing the room. "Each November, Tianhai City's top schools host martial arts exchange matches. But this year—" His voice sharpened, "—your opponents will be Egret City's elite."
The class erupted in chatter.
"You mean we have to compete?"
"Shouldn't these matches be between their and our strongest students?"
Zhang Cheng's fist struck the desk. "The rules: ten competitors per school. Most victories wins. Matches occur in Crimson Realm Arena—streamable online. Victory earns cash rewards."
Lin Qi's eyes gleamed. Money meant everything to him.
"Probably won't make the top ten roster", he muttered.
"Let me read the selected names", Zhang Cheng announced.
"First—Li Zhou!"
Li Zhou's lips curved.
"Second—Yu Jing!"
Yu Jing cracked his neck.
"Third—Qi Yuelin!"
Qi Yuelin remained expressionless.
The class buzzed. "They're just announcing the Top Ten!"
Qiu Jie stood taller, chest puffed. "Tenth—Lin Qi!" Zhang Cheng declared.
"Lin Qi?!"
The room exploded. Even Li Zhou and Yu Jing stared. Lin Qi blinked in confusion.
"Brother Qi, looks like we're teammates again!" Jiang Tao grinned, throwing an arm around him.
Zhang Cheng's gaze swept the room. "Any objections?"
Qiu Jie shot up. "Sir, I protest! Lin Qi's ranked 18th—how is he in the top ten?!"
The room chilled as Zhang Cheng's aura crushed down. "Doubting my decision?"
Qiu Jie staggered under the pressure. "N-no, sir!"
Zhang Cheng gestured to the exit. "Then fight in the Virtual Chamber. Winner takes the final spot."
The class stampeded to the training facility.
Inside the Neural Pods, Lin Qi donned black armor, gripping his Black Long Spear. Across the crimson battlefield, Qiu Jie sneered, blue-clad with his white spear.
"Teacher Zhang chose wrong", Qiu Jie spat. "I'll pierce your heart in ten moves."
"You talk too much", Lin Qi replied coldly.
[Duel Mode: Ready!]
3... 2... 1...
Qiu Jie vanished, reappearing mid-lunge like a panther.
Lin Qi countered like lightning, his spear singing with sonic booms.
The duel had begun.
