Chapter 48: The Start of Summer Vacation
Chapter 48: The Start of Summer Vacation (Seeking Recommendations and Favorites)
"Wow..."
Liam was hugging the toilet, retching, when he heard his mother Sally's voice from outside:
"Liam, are you okay?"
"Mom, I'm fine. I'll be out in a minute, ugh—"
The reason Liam was vomiting was that he was on a cruise ship, and unfortunately, they had encountered some rough seas, causing him to get seasick...
As for why he was on a cruise ship, it all started like this. After returning home from Hogwarts for the summer vacation, Liam and Hermione would meet at the community library every day to do their homework. Hermione, the true top student, probably planned to finish her homework and then start reviewing, while Liam intended to finish his homework and then explore a new world at the Multiverse General Store to find any legacies that could enhance his abilities. If he found any, he could spend the rest of his vacation mastering them. After all, the knowledge he gained at school was far too limited.
In the magical world, knowledge is power. Last semester, due to his lack of power, he had mostly just been a bystander and hadn't earned many important Deviation Points. So Liam was determined to improve his abilities.
He had expected to spend the summer vacation studying intensively, but things changed quickly. Just a week into the break, Liam's father, Mr. Lambert, received an invitation. One of his university classmates from Reykjavik had finally found his soulmate and was getting married, inviting Mr. Lambert as a guest.
Mr. Lambert and this classmate had been very close during their university days. After graduation, the classmate worked for National Geographic, traveling the world and taking photographs. Despite the distance, their friendship never waned, and he would always send Mr. Lambert postcards from his travels.
Liam had seen many of these postcards from around the world at home. So, Mr. Lambert decided to take the opportunity to take the whole family on a cruise to Iceland, combining a vacation with attending his best friend's wedding.
What he hadn't anticipated was that a small storm would cause his son to get seasick.
Fortunately, after Liam vomited, he went up to the deck with his parents to get some fresh air, and he started feeling better. Luckily, they had boarded the ship in Scotland and only needed to stay on it for two days before reaching Iceland.
Once he felt a bit better, Liam had the energy to plan his trip in Iceland. Seeing that Liam was recovering and wanted to focus, his parents decided not to disturb him and went to enjoy a traditional Nordic sauna on the ship.
After learning they would be going to Iceland, Liam had gone to Diagon Alley's only wizarding travel agency, Seven Stars Travel Agency, to get a stack of travel guides about Iceland.
Unlike in Britain, the entire Nordic Ministry of Magic operates as a single entity. Considering Iceland's population, the number of wizards there is quite small. Even if you count all the intelligent magical beings and apply an exaggerated 1‰ ratio, there would only be about 250 intelligent magical beings in Iceland (with a population of around 250,000 in 1991). If one-third of these beings are wizards, then the number of wizards in Iceland is less than a hundred.
For a wizard like Liam, who is still in school, entering Iceland is very easy. He doesn't even need to register with the local wizarding authorities.
Iceland's wizarding community relies heavily on tourism and the sale of special products, so they have very relaxed entry controls for foreign wizards. In Iceland, there is the largest wild Silent Bird Reserve in Europe, which is home to not only Silent Birds but also some wild Trolls and Goblin Tribes.
Meanwhile, the waters near Iceland are also home to the giant North Sea Giant and Loba Worm. The International Confederation of Wizards has set up several observation points here to monitor these rare magical creatures and ensure they don't appear in front of ordinary people.
Not to mention, there are still some remnants left by the Ancient Norse Wizards in Iceland. To this day, some Wizards continue to search for any treasures that might have been passed down.
After going through the information about Iceland, Liam found that he felt much better. He took out a stack of parchment from his luggage and continued working on his homework.
Fortunately, during his trip to Diagon Alley to gather materials, Liam had also found an old cloth bag in a second-hand shop that had been enchanted with an Undetectable Extension Charm. This allowed him to carry a large number of textbooks and study tools while traveling.
The cloth bag was a bit old-fashioned, with some beautiful lace trim, and it was now tucked away in the corner of Liam's suitcase. On the outside, it looked no bigger than the span of two adult male hands, but it could actually hold as much as two large suitcases.
Liam felt he had found a real bargain, as he only spent five Galleons on the bag. The shopkeeper thought it was just a regular bag with an Undetectable Extension Charm. However, Liam discovered at home that no matter how heavy the contents, the bag's weight would never exceed five kilograms. This suggested it was a more advanced magical item.
Of course, the main purpose of this trip was to relax, and it would be a shame to spend all his time cooped up in his room doing homework. Besides, this was a cruise ship, and there were many interesting things to do on board. For example, the ship's brochure mentioned Yoga Classes, a small theater for short plays, a cinema, and a Duty-Free Shop.
Even in his previous life, Liam, who lived in an inland city, had never experienced this kind of travel. So after finishing his homework for the day, Liam started wandering around the ship.
In this era, Chinese tourists traveling abroad were still quite rare. Several staff members greeted Liam in Japanese, which made him feel a bit uncomfortable.
After exploring the ship and broadening his horizons, Liam realized that many of the ship's services were not available to him as a child. He also didn't have much pocket money, so he couldn't buy any souvenirs. With no other options, he returned to their cabin, lay on the bed, and started watching TV.
Suddenly, a news report caught his attention. The TV announced that a volcano in eastern Iceland was about to erupt. According to the information Liam had gathered in Diagon Alley, there was an Ancient Norse Wizarding Ruin near the volcano, and it seemed to have some connection to the volcanic activity. So Liam decided to check it out when the time came.
Not long after, Liam's parents returned from the sauna, looking refreshed. They were a bit upset to see Liam lounging on the bed watching TV, thinking he was wasting the opportunity to enjoy the trip. As a result, Mr. Lambert dragged Liam along a scenic route on the ship for a jog.
Fortunately, after jogging around the ship, Liam felt much better and finally managed to shake off his seasickness.
