Chapter 48: Gaining Renown
Chapter 48: Gaining Renown
"Help! Help!"
As soon as Jerry burst into the fourth floor and activated Superman mode, significantly enhancing his senses, he heard a faint cry for help coming from a nearby room.
Without hesitation,
he focused his mind, and riding his flying broom, he swiftly dodged the stones and steel that had fallen due to the intense heat, arriving at a door that was glowing red from the flames.
"Full-Speed Repel!"
A repelling charm sent the loose iron door flying, and Jerry charged into the room, flames at his back. In the bathroom, which was filled with tiles and steam, he found a young woman in a bathrobe, covering her mouth and nose with a wet towel.
At this moment, the lady, likely having inhaled some of the thick smoke, had a dazed look in her eyes, and her cries for help were growing weaker. If he had arrived any later, she would have fainted and been consumed by the flames.
"Water and Fire Impervious Charm!"
Casting the Water and Fire Impervious Charm on the woman, Jerry didn't bother to explain. He picked her up and placed her on the flying broom, then flew out of the window, flames licking at his heels.
"Here, take her!"
Handing the woman over to the police officers maintaining order, he didn't wait for their reaction and immediately rode his flying broom back into the flames.
These were all Little Red Stars, and every person he saved meant more of them.
After a thorough search, he found two young men near the elevator. They had likely tried to escape using the elevator when the fire started but were instead overcome by the smoke.
Using the Water and Fire Impervious Charm and a levitation charm, Jerry grabbed one arm of each man and flew them to safety.
This went on as he repeatedly darted between the fourth, fifth, and partially burned sixth floors, rescuing over twenty people—both men and women—trapped by the flames or overcome by smoke.
During this time, the fire department finally arrived, and several fire trucks began spraying water, eventually bringing the fire under control.
When Jerry finally rescued an elderly couple who had huddled together on the sixth-floor rooftop, preparing to face death together, and placed them safely on the ground,
the onlookers and the police officers maintaining order all silently raised their hands and applauded.
Listening to the grateful applause around him, for a moment, he felt that even without the Little Red Stars, it was all worth it.
But he quickly shook off that dangerous thought.
He wasn't truly invincible yet, just a little stronger than the average person. He couldn't afford to become overconfident.
Being a saint was not something just anyone could do. He needed to take care of himself first!
"Thank you so much for this, how should I address you? Wizard?"
At that moment, a police officer in a chief's uniform stepped forward, his face showing gratitude.
"Hass?"
Seeing the person, Jerry was taken aback for a moment but quickly responded:
"Wizard, I like that title. I've studied magic since I was young, all to help those in need and do good deeds!"
Indeed, as a police chief, Hass would naturally be present at such a major fire in Queens.
"To have such a sense of duty at your age is truly admirable!"
Hass first expressed his admiration, then hesitated and said:
"However, you need to come with us to the police station. We need to register your identity!"
"I'm sorry, but my situation is special, and I can't go with you. I appreciate your understanding."
There was no way Jerry would go to the police station with Hass to register his identity. The average police station's security was laughable, and a hacker with even moderate skills could easily access his information.
Without waiting for Hass to react, Jerry grabbed the flying broom and shot up into the sky, disappearing from everyone's sight.
This left Lucy and the other journalists who had just managed to squeeze through, completely empty-handed.
Jerry wasn't going to give any interviews. If it hadn't been for Hass's appearance just now, he would have already retreated on his broom.
The more you talk, the more you risk. He wasn't a professional spy or a psychological analysis expert. One slip of the tongue, and he might inadvertently reveal some important information about himself.
After Jerry vanished, Hass's eyes showed a hint of confusion:
"That wizard's voice sounds so familiar."
"Captain, what are you talking about?"
Hass's team members, curious about his muttering, leaned in to ask.
"Nothing, quickly organize the ambulances to take the injured to the hospital!"
Shaking off the strange thoughts in his head, Hass hurriedly gave the order to the officer.
"But, what about that wizard? Shouldn't we let Chief George know?"
"What can I do? Didn't you see, he can fly. Can we fly? Stop wasting time and focus on saving lives. If there's any trouble, let the commissioner deal with me later!"
Leaving the fire scene, Jerry soared his flying broom to a high altitude and opened his attribute panel.
Seeing the additional three thousand plus Little Red Stars on his attribute panel, a bright smile spread across his face.
Saving a life is better than building a seven-story pagoda. At the fire scene, he had saved over twenty people, earning him more than three thousand Little Red Stars, more than he had earned from his nightly patrols over the past week combined.
Indeed, the bigger the disaster, the more Little Red Stars he could gain by participating.
In fact, Jerry had once tested it. If he created a disaster and then intervened, he could also earn Little Red Stars.
For example, if he set a building on fire and then saved people, he could farm Little Red Stars.
However, once he discovered this bug, Jerry made a silent vow to never use it to farm Little Red Stars, no matter what, as this was his absolute bottom line.
If he could start a fire today and save people to farm Little Red Stars, tomorrow he might justify killing people to get them.
Once Pandora's box is opened, it's hard to close.
Human desires are endless. If he didn't learn to control them, he would eventually become a madman driven by power.
At that point, he might even sacrifice the people he loved to gain more power, all without a second thought.
That was something he absolutely refused to let happen.
His initial goal in gaining power was to protect himself and those he loved, not to seek power for its own sake.
Besides, there's no such thing as a completely airtight plan. Sooner or later, his actions would be discovered, and he would become a genuine villain.
In the Marvel universe, how many villains survive until the end?
Back at the abandoned warehouse, Jerry stuffed the wizard outfit and flying broom into his guitar case, put on his hat, and slung the guitar case over his shoulder. He carefully avoided the surveillance cameras and crowds as he made his way back to his neighborhood.
However, just as he was about to enter his apartment, a figure suddenly jumped out from the side.
"Jerry, how could you go out without me?"
Upon closer inspection, it was Elsa, who had woken up from her nap, searched the house for him, and was now pouting angrily.
