Chapter 479: Family Values
Chapter 479: Family Values
On the 3rd day of November, in the year 200 of the Pokemon League, winter had arrived.
Bitter cold winds swept down from Frostbite Peak, engulfing the entire Padia region, as pristine snowflakes fluttered down from the sky.
In this frigid weather, wild Pokemon sought refuge in their nests, rarely venturing out.
The ranch, too, was blanketed in snow, the fluttering snowflakes resembling tiny sprites dancing playfully in the air.
During winter, farming was impractical, so Naoki had given the Dragonites a break much earlier, allowing them to cozy up in the warm World Tree for the season.
The ranch store was temporarily closed, bringing the entire ranch to a rare standstill.
Eevee and Trevenant had scampered off to play in the World Tree, leaving only a handful of Pokemon at home.
Magcargo nestled in the fireplace in the living room, its radiant heat spreading through ducts to every corner of the house, even warming the storeroom.
Naoki sat in a rocking chair in front of the fireplace, his mind drifting, while Motostoke and Coalossal lounged lazily on the nearby carpet.
Turning to glance at the two Pokemon beside him, Naoki's thoughts inevitably wandered back to that summer three months ago.
Amidst the dazzling fireworks, Kishu had confessed her feelings to him.
Naoki had been completely taken aback, so much so that he didn't know how to respond at the time.
Seeing his reaction, Kishu had looked a little dejected.
Naoki remembered what he had said to her.
He had said it was all so sudden.
Seeing the disappointment on Kishu's face, Naoki had felt a twinge of guilt.
He admitted that he had a certain fondness for her and honestly told Kishu that he had never been in a relationship before and didn't know what it meant to like someone.
Naoki had always valued emotions, and after coming to this world, he had often thought about building a family of his own.
He envisioned a life similar to that of Mayor Thomas and Mrs. Dantes—tending to the ranch with his beloved, living together, supporting each other through life, and growing old together.
He imagined having a child, taking them to meet Pokemon, seeing Seals in the Icy Ruins, Heart Scales while scuba diving, Croconaw in the desert, and Pancham in the bamboo forest… and living a simple, peaceful life.
Although Kishu didn't receive an immediate response that day, she was delighted to know that Naoki reciprocated her feelings.
Later…
The two of them encountered Yezi and Xinli on the beach.
Yezi mentioned that she was in Rustborough for an inspection, but the smile on her face made Naoki feel that there was more to her visit than she let on.
After that night, they returned to their respective homes.
Kishu continued her routine, visiting the ranch whenever she had free time, bringing small gifts and homemade treats for Naoki and the Pokemon.
Her presence always brought liveliness to the ranch, and like her vibrant personality, Naoki felt energized whenever she was around.
Recalling these events, a smile involuntarily formed on Naoki's face.
Today was Sunday, so the Nimbasa Gym would be closed. Based on past experience, Kishu should be at the ranch by now.
Naoki glanced at the time on his Rotom Phone and realized it was almost noon.
Becoming aware of his actions, Naoki suddenly realized that he had been looking forward to Kishu's weekly visits.
Sister Simisage, who had been quietly observing Naoki's expression, finally spoke up.
After a while, she leaned in and asked, "Aye?" (Are you waiting for Kishu?)
Naoki felt a bit embarrassed and replied seriously, "No, I'm just checking the weather for tomorrow."
However, his emotions didn't escape Sister Simisage's keen perception, and she looked delighted.
"Aye!" (Then we'll be able to welcome a little master soon!)
In her mind, as long as two people liked each other, they would quickly produce an egg.
That's how it worked for Pokemon, so it must be the same for humans!
Naoki: "..."
"Ahem." Realizing Sister Simisage's misunderstanding, Naoki coughed lightly and felt compelled to clarify, "No, it's not like that!"
Sister Simisage turned to him, confused. "Aye?"
Naoki explained, "There's a significant difference between humans and Pokemon in this regard. For Pokemon, as long as they like each other and spend every day together, they will quickly produce an egg."
"But it's not the same for humans. While liking each other is important, the prerequisite is whether the two people are compatible and can live together harmoniously. Only after this process of mutual adjustment can they get married and live together."
"Aye..." Sister Simisage suddenly felt that humans were complicated.
Naoki: "..."
Babbo's eyes sparkled with curiosity as it flew closer, and it asked another question.
"Ba mo ba mo?" (So, will Naoki have a granddaughter? Will his granddaughter come to visit the ranch and become friends with me and Magcargo?)
Simisage was stumped by this question.
"Ai yi?" (That seems a bit too soon, doesn't it?)
Naoki: "..."
He gently rubbed Babbo's fluffy fur and said, "Stop watching so much 'Warm Magcargo Home'!"
"Ba mo~"
Babbo snuggled up to Naoki, acting coy.
Caught up in Babbo's playful mood, Naoki found himself imagining his future grandchild visiting the ranch.
By then, he would probably be in his seventies or eighties!
Realizing the direction of his thoughts, Naoki shook his head to clear his mind of such fanciful notions.
He took out his phone and sent a message to Kishu.
[Naoki: Are you coming over today?]
Kishu didn't reply immediately. After a while, Naoki heard a knock on the door.
Babbo, always eager, rushed to open the door.
As the door opened, Naoki turned and saw Kishu standing there with a beaming smile.
"It's so cold today!" She rubbed her hands together, trying to warm herself.
Kishu was actually quite sensitive to the cold, and in previous winters, she would spend most of her time at home, cozying up with her Pokemon.
Naoki stood up and smiled. "Come over here by the fire. They say that it's not the snow that brings the cold, but the thaw."
"I know!"
Kishu giggled as she entered, making her way to the fireplace to warm herself by Magcargo's radiant heat. The orange glow from the Pokemon illuminated the fireplace with a warm, reddish hue.
Naoki offered to make her a cup of hot tea to warm up.
Meanwhile, Simisage and Babbo curiously approached Kishu, observing her intently.
"Hey there! Good morning!" Kishu greeted the two Pokemon cheerfully. "And hello to you too, Motostoke and Coalossal!"
"Agassi~"
"Gaoh!"
Just then, Naoki returned with a cup of hot tea, and as he handed it to Kishu, he noticed something different about her.
The little Coloreel on her head was gone!
"Where's your Coloreel?" Naoki asked.
Kishu touched her head and realized she had forgotten about it. "I felt like that hairstyle was something a child would like, and it made me seem too immature."
Ever since that day they parted ways, Kishu felt it was time for a change. She couldn't stay as childish as she used to be; she was an adult now and needed to act more mature and responsible.
Naoki paused, wondering if Kishu's change was because of him. At that moment, Kishu looked up at him with hopeful eyes, her cheeks flushed, and asked, "Now?"
"What?"
"Do you like me a little more now?"
Naoki was taken aback, and his heart skipped a beat.
After a moment, he moved his lips, but the words he wanted to say next were difficult for the usually reserved Naoki to express.
However, seeing the girl's proactive attitude, he knew he couldn't just stay passive; he had to show some initiative too.
Taking a deep breath, despite his lingering embarrassment, he said sincerely, "Although I don't know what 'like' is, if it means looking forward to seeing you every day and wanting to talk to you, then... I think I must like you too!"
"Agassi~"
Coalossal was delighted to witness this exchange.
Simisage and Babbo were overjoyed as well. With this development, they no longer had to worry about Naoki spending his life alone.
While he had a group of Pokemon to keep him company, it was still better for humans to have other humans around.
There were some things that Pokemon just couldn't do for their trainers.
Babbo and Magcargo were also thrilled. This meant that Naoki would have a granddaughter!
And his granddaughter would come to visit Magcargo, becoming friends with them, just like in the 'Warm Magcargo Home' show!
