Chapter 47: Organs and Hair
Chapter 47: Organs and Hair
Your anomaly... it fills up six entire floors?
Shocked by this absurd answer, Leon was speechless for a long time. It wasn’t until he saw the slight upward curve of the Red-Haired Director’s lips that he realized he had been fooled again.
"As long as I can get the sheep heart back, it’s mine, right? Then I have no problem with that!"
After giving the Red-Haired Director’s back a glare, the twice-fooled Leon really didn’t want to continue this nonsense. He left the Director’s office with a dark face after leaving a message.
After he pushed the door open and left, the red-haired woman, who had been looking out the window, slowly turned her head back. Her face, though charming and playful, was full of smiles, but her moist, clear eyes showed no joy, instead appearing as deep and cold as two icy ponds.
"Things are actually pretty good this way."
Murmuring something, she reined her smile and drank the glass of water in one swift gulp. Then, as if she had fallen asleep, she laid her head on the desk and remained motionless. Soon, the office was filled with the soft, steady snoising of her sleep.
As the snoring spread, it echoed through the second, third, and fourth floors, all the way up to the topmost floor, where all windows and vents were sealed to prevent any light from entering. In the entire six-story building, countless tiny creatures began to snore softly and inaudibly.
...
"There’s actually something like this!!!"
After reading the records about Char Waterworks Company’s illegal operations, the social editor of the Daily News couldn’t help but flare with anger. He restrained himself to lightly hammer the table in the restaurant and promised, with eyes full of indignation:
"Actually putting contaminants into public water pipes... these damned fellows, do they have nothing in their heads but money? I must expose this!"
"Hmm..."
Leon, his fingers lightly touching the sheep head, looked at the editor’s face, full of rage. Disappointment clouded his own face, then he nodded expressionlessly, stood up, and began to gather the documents on the table.
"Since you agree, we’ll stop here today. I hope you follow through with your word."
"I will!"
The Daily News social editor grabbed Leon’s wrist and stood up, eyes alight with passion. He promised:
"I’ll take care of this! I’ll write about this as soon as I get back, making sure those damned fellows get the punishment they deserve! By the way, the evidence seems thin. This might only get Char Department Store fined, and the real culprits might get away. Do you have more evidence on the other three?"
"Not yet."
Seeing the other’s soul, devoid of any real anger but brimming with panic, schemes, and evil intentions, a thick wave of disgust flashed through Leon’s eyes.
Resisting the urge to punch the other in the face, the disguised Leon pushed the hand away, expressionless, and gathered the documents back into the folder. He then bid farewell:
"Mr. Editor, if you think the evidence isn’t enough, I’ll take it back and organize. I’ll contact you once I have enough evidence."
"Ah, no need, no need!"
Seeing Leon about to leave, the Daily News social editor seemed anxious, quickly pulling his arm and pleading:
"Those victims are waiting for compensation! The evidence, though incomplete, is enough to draw attention. Why don’t you leave it with me, and I’ll get a report out first?"
(End of Chapter)"No need."
"Why not?"
Unable to hold back any longer, Leon abruptly shook off the man's hand, his expressionless face revealing his thoughts, "Because if I give you what you want, this report will likely never see the light of day."
"..."
Hmph... So, he's figured it out. This kid isn't as foolish as he looks.
Gazing at Leon's unusually cold eyes, the editor-in-chief of the Daily News raised his eyebrows slightly, knowing that his intentions had been seen through and the data would likely not be handed over.
With disdain, he glanced at Leon, who was only showing his eyes, and took in his slender figure and shabby attire. Just moments ago, the editor had been full of warmth and enthusiasm towards Leon, but now, his lips curled downwards as he sat back in his chair and shouted, "Waiter!"
He waved at the waiter who had been eyeing them from a distance and pointed at Leon, giving his instructions with a calm expression, "Close the door, and call over two security guards. This man just stole my belongings, and the item is in his embrace."
"Yes, sir! I'll close the door outside!"
The editor-in-chief of the Daily News was dressed in a high-end Flok suit, with a folded silk handkerchief in his chest pocket, a hat, a cravat, a watch, and a cane, all perfectly coordinated. His feet were adorned with calf leather shoes.
After taking another look at Leon, who was wearing an ill-fitting, tattered overcoat and covering his mouth and nose with a black veil, the waiter didn't even need half a second to know what to do.
Even though these two had entered the restaurant together, even though they were separated by a table with no physical contact throughout, and even though the wealthy gentleman had been pointing at something held by the masked overcoat man from the start... None of this could sway the waiter's judgment.
After all, customers were always right, and one of these two individuals was clearly not a patron of this establishment, wasn't he?
"..."
Watching as the waiter summoned four security guards and blocked the exit of the compartment, Leon couldn't help but furrow his brows. He turned and gave the editor-in-chief, who was neatly adjusting his tie, a cold stare.
"Are you going to rob me?"
"I'm not robbing you; I just want to save your life and, in the process, save the poor soul you've chosen."
After carefully smoothing out the creases on his tie, the editor-in-chief of the Daily News stood up, leaning on his cane. He slowly approached Leon.
"Although you've been covering your face, listening to your voice and observing your actions, you don't seem very old. Hmph, young man, your sense of justice is admirable, but you clearly don't understand the rules of this society."
Lightly raising his slender cane, he wiped off the mud from the tip on Leon's pants. The editor-in-chief of the Daily News smiled and spoke softly, "For our nation, the royal family is the heart, the nobility are the vital organs, the parliament is the brain, the factories are the strongest muscles, the merchants are the bones that continuously produce blood, and as for the rest... they are merely the skin that regenerates on its own and the hair that constantly grows and falls out."
Looking at the silent Leon before him, the editor-in-chief's smile faded slightly. Then, with disgust in his eyes, he leaned close to Leon's ear and asked in a voice only they could hear, "I ask you, when the hair has complaints about the vital organs, should I, as the tongue, help spread this matter, causing more pointless chaos among the foolish hair and skin?
Or should I be a little smarter and directly stop this meddlesome hair, teaching it to shut its damn mouth?"
