Chapter 47: Could You Really Be a Genius?
Chapter 47: Could You Really Be a Genius?
Night had fallen, and the stars were unusually bright tonight.
"Burp—"
Gastly let out a belch, swaying unsteadily behind Jing He, looking both content and uncomfortable.
"Kuah—"
"I told you not to eat so much."
"Kuah, kuah—"
"No! We're almost home, don't throw up on me!"
Half an hour later.
Gastly lounged lazily on the sofa, holding a smartphone and scrolling through videos.
Jing He emerged from the bathroom, toweling his wet hair, and sat at the dining table. He looked at the Pokemon egg in the incubator and sighed in frustration.
Raising a Gastly was hard enough, and now he had to deal with a Pokemon egg. The worst part was that he had no idea what Pokemon was inside.
During dinner, Zephyr Mijin had called, reassuring him that the Floatzel was fine and apologizing for not being able to join him for dinner. When Jing He asked about the Pokemon egg, Zephyr only gave a mysterious smile.
Jing He suspected that even Zephyr might not know what Pokemon was inside the egg.
"Sigh, I'll just leave it for now. With the incubator, I just need to add nutrients every few days."
There was no way Zephyr's gift could hatch into a Magikarp, right?
He placed the incubator on a shelf and turned around to find Gastly staring at him. He immediately said sternly:
"Don't even think about it."
"Kuah!!"
Gastly jumped up.
What does he take me for? I can't really eat it; at most, I'll just lick it.
"No licking!"
Jing He said firmly, his face dark.
"Kuah?!" Gastly tilted its head.
How can we be friends if I don't lick?
It was already eagerly waiting for the Pokemon inside the egg to hatch so they could be friends.
Jing He took a deep breath and pulled out a TM from his pocket.
"Use this, and I'll let you lick it for a month."
Gastly's eyes lit up.
"Kuah?"
Where did you get it?
"I earned it."
Jing He replied grumpily, drying his hair and changing into fresh clothes.
"Kuah?"
Another one?
It was the TM for "Substitute," which Jing He had obtained by working as a psychologist for Devon Corporation at Zephyr Mijin's request.
After changing, Jing He grabbed a broom, mop, and bucket and headed back to the bathroom.
Gastly looked at him with a puzzled expression.
What are you doing?
"Cleaning up your 'masterpiece.' It's unhygienic, and if we don't clean it, we'll attract Stunfisk and get complaints."
Gastly chuckled sheepishly.
Sweep, sweep, sweep—
The bright moonlight bathed the city of Kanaz in a soft, hazy glow. The water stains on the floor reflected the moon, changing shape as Jing He scrubbed.
Gastly floated around, moving left and right, its shadow casting eerie shapes on the ground and walls under the moonlight.
"Kuah, kuah—"
Come on! Come on!
It cheered, but its eyes never left the TM in its hands.
"Phew—"
Jing He exhaled, wiping the sweat from his forehead. He looked at the now clean floor and nodded in satisfaction.
"Almost done."
He picked up the bucket.
Splash—
With the rinse of clean water, the floor returned to its pristine state.
"Kuah, kuah!"
Gastly called out, drawing Jing He's attention.
Then he saw it.
The mist around Gastly began to shift, expand, and wriggle. Gastly's eyes grew serious and intense, its face slightly flushed.
With a low, deep cry, a black mist separated from behind it, forming a smaller, ghostly shape that slowly took on Gastly's form, complete with a sinister smile.
Two shadows now lay on the ground.
A Substitute?!
Jing He was taken aback by what he had just witnessed.
"Roar!"
Ghist then looked proud.
It made its "substitute" slowly merge into its shadow, moving as it willed, ready to appear and disappear at any moment.
"You already learned it?"
In Jing He's gaze, the Pokedex entry for G hist showed that the move "Substitute" had already appeared under the "Mastery" section.
It had only been looking at this for about an hour, maybe even less.
While "Substitute" wasn't considered a particularly difficult move and could be relatively simple, it usually took most Pokemon at least a couple of days to learn.
How did you learn it in less than an hour?
"Could you be a genius?"
Or do you have a 'study god' system?"
"Roar roar—"
G hist laughed strangely, saying it had always claimed to have exceptional talent, and now it believed it.
Indeed, G hist had a natural talent for moves.
Whether it was "Smogon," "Toxic," or "Haze," it learned them quickly.
Even the moves it already knew, it improved its proficiency rapidly.
P—
Looking at the "Substitute" dispersing, fearing it would disperse and return to Smogon, the fog would scatter and Jing He would expose its fear.
G hist's learning ability was indeed strong, but it could learn "Substitute" so quickly mainly because it often changed forms, giving it a good understanding of its body.
"Roar!"
The old man couldn't wait to learn the next move!
"But that's not enough," Jing He said sternly.
Confidence is good, but you can't let G hist get too proud, or its tail will stick up to the sky?
"Roar?"
"Think about it, since 'Substitute' is part of your body, why can't 'substitute' use moves?"
Eh?
G hist narrowed its eyes, looking at the "Move learner."
There's no mention of that.
"Then, does 'hypnosis' just put opponents to sleep, or can your 'hypnosis' put them to sleep?"
H hearing this, G hist's face showed realization.
It made sense.
"So, when an opponent says your 'substitute' can't use moves, it doesn't mean you can't, given your exceptional talent, right?"
Jing He's eyes showed a hint of "danger" as he continued:
"Think about it, if your 'substitute' can use moves, when it uses 'Ghost Fire' and 'Haze,' it could one-shot an opponent, right?"
"Or, when it uses 'Mysterious Light' and you use 'Lick,' you have double control."
"Or, more boldly, if you make three or four 'substitutes' and have them use different moves, the opponent couldn't even shudder."
G hist's eyes lit up with excitement.
It was as if a new world was slowly opening its doors.
Too much sense!
"Ro ar—"
An excited G hist pounced towards Jing He.
S lip—
its tongue firmly licked.
"Ka cha."
Jing He, while rubbing his face, took a bite of the "Cherry Berry" and said:
"Right? You have a lot more to learn."
" ro ar ro ar!"
G hist nodded earnestly.
"Let's go back."
Biting the "Cherry Berry," Jing He was about to pick up the bucket when he suddenly thought of something. He walked to the nearby garbage station, pulled out an energy block from his chest, and placed it on the ground.
" ro ar?"
"News a few days ago said the cities are too clean, and the stinky mud is gone, leading to a decrease in the survival environment. The League had to create special garbage stations to accommodate them. It's not easy, and they have fewer abilities to help."
After putting down the energy block, Jing He took G hist home.
After they left, the originally quiet garbage station came to life, revealing a pair of eyes.
The next day.
While waiting for breakfast, G hist, practicing "substitute" by the window, suddenly noticed something in the sky, a hint of orange and a shadow causing fear.
" ro ar!"
Look out, plane!
