Chapter 469: The Eccentric Miss Lovegood
Chapter 469: The Eccentric Miss Lovegood
After the training session, Ivan returned to his dormitory and took out a quill to write a letter. The content was simple: he was informing someone that he would be participating in the Quidditch match.
Then, Ivan suddenly remembered the sign Luna had made and smiled, adding a small spell to the letter.
Having finished, Ivan placed the letter in Maca’s beak and said, “Take this to Luna in Ravenclaw, that somewhat eccentric girl. Got it?”
Although he and Luna were in the same castle and he could see her in the Great Hall during dinner, going over just to tell her about his Quidditch participation seemed too strange and could compromise secrecy. So, writing a letter was better.
“Ivan, are you sending a letter? To whom?” Harry asked curiously as he watched Ivan release Maca.
“Just a friend!” Ivan replied.
Meanwhile, in the Ravenclaw tower, the young wizards who had finished their dinner were preparing to return to their dormitories.
Among them was a solitary figure who seemed to be entirely at ease, humming a tune to herself.
This unique behavior drew frequent glances from the other young wizards. Over the past two years, Luna had become something of a “celebrity” in Ravenclaw, known for her eccentric nature.
Some even gave her nicknames like "Ravenclaw’s Mad Girl" or "The Eccentric Miss Lovegood."
As Luna walked by, the young wizards began to whisper among themselves.
“She’s really a mad girl. I heard she’s looking for creatures that don’t even exist.”
“I’ve never seen anyone wear a necklace made of wine corks. No wonder no one wants to be her friend.”
“She even wears Dirigible Plums as earrings.”
The whispers grew louder, and as everyone shared the same opinion, the private discussions became more open.
Luna heard these comments but showed no reaction, or perhaps she was used to it and no longer cared.
However, a Ravenclaw boy seemed to be looking for some new entertainment and called out to Luna.
“Lovegood, do you really believe in Nargles?”
“Ah, yes!” Luna turned and looked at him, then corrected him seriously. “And you should call them Nargles!”
Luna’s response caused the Ravenclaw young wizards to burst into laughter, and the entire tower was filled with a lively atmosphere.
“I’ve checked the records, and there’s no such thing as a Nargle,” the Ravenclaw boy said smugly.
“The world is vast, and no one can know everything. Since there are always undiscovered creatures, it’s possible that Nargles exist. After all, we can’t prove they don’t exist, can we?” Luna countered, her voice melodic and unaffected by their ridicule.
Luna’s explanation was unsatisfying and seemed like a weak argument, so the laughter continued.
However, since Luna didn’t respond further, they couldn’t find new entertainment, and the effort they put into teasing her felt like hitting a wall of cotton—utterly uninteresting. They eventually stopped.
Luna slowly walked into her dormitory, the small incident not affecting her mood in the slightest.
The situation in the dormitory wasn't much better. The few potted plants she had been growing had been maliciously pulled out, and the decorations on her bedside table were also missing.
The usual prank.
Luna didn't bother with the missing items and patiently replanted the green plants, filling the soil back in. She then prepared to write a notice as usual to look for her lost items.
However, when Luna's gaze shifted to the side, she froze.
A sign leaned against the corner of the dormitory, covered in strange graffiti, completely transformed.
Luna walked over and confirmed that this was indeed the sign she had made, but she had clearly placed it under her bed.
"Aurora, was this your doing?" Luna frowned, suddenly turning to look at the young witches in the dormitory and asked.
The young witches were quite surprised; they had pranked Luna many times, and this was the first time she had reacted.
"Yes, it was me! We are Ravenclaw students, how can you cheer for a Gryffindor? You weren't this enthusiastic when we played against Slytherin", Aurora said indignantly.
"I saw Ivan Hals written on it. Could it be that you like him?" another Ravenclaw girl sneered.
"We are friends", Luna explained.
"Friends? Ivan Hals is your friend? How come we didn't know?" Aurora cut Luna off, as she had never seen Luna interact with the famous Ivan Hals.
"Yes, friends!" Luna nodded, recalling how Ivan had admitted this to her a few days ago.
Aurora and the others didn't believe her.
Ivan Hals was a star at Hogwarts, a rising star in the magical world. He had exposed the traitor Peter Pettigrew, who had deceived the magical world for over a decade, and easily driven away over a hundred Dementors. His past achievements were countless.
In Aurora's view, Luna was probably just like many other young witches who secretly admired Hals, but she was bolder, daring to cheer for him openly on the field.
After all, everyone in Ravenclaw knew how odd Luna was, always believing in strange things, and no one wanted to be her friend.
Just as Aurora was about to expose this, an owl suddenly flapped its wings and flew in through the window, landing directly on Luna's shoulder.
Luna found this strange; apart from letters from her father and school notifications, no one usually sent her letters.
With this thought, Luna took the letter from the owl's beak and opened it.
"I've rejoined the Quidditch team, the match is the day after tomorrow! —Ivan Hals"
Reading the words, Luna's previously troubled mood instantly improved. She also noticed that there was a large blank space left before the signature.
After a moment's thought, Luna placed her Wand on the blank space and used magic to draw a circle. The black ink connected, revealing hidden words that, when combined with the original, read:
"I've rejoined the Quidditch team, the match is the day after tomorrow! Don't forget to bring the sign to cheer for me! —Your loyal friend, Ivan Hals!"
