Chapter 464: The Hour of Death Draws Near
Chapter 464: The Hour of Death Draws Near
In the dimly lit passageway, Lu Chen walked slowly. He arrived at a stone cave and, following the old fox's instructions, used his spiritual energy to dispel the restrictions outside the cave. A fierce beast pounced out, only to be pulled back into the depths of the cave by the rune chains on its body.
By now, Lu Chen was accustomed to these beasts' bluster and lack of substance. He calmly entered the cave.
All the ferocious beasts confined within this forbidden land were not only restrained by the array outside the stone cave but also had their demonic powers sealed and their movements restricted by various artifacts. Their strength was diminished to less than a third, and Lu Chen could easily handle them.
"Be a good boy and let me draw some blood," Lu Chen said to the beast.
Inside the cave was a giant snake with a pitch-black body and two heads, glaring menacingly at Lu Chen. When it saw the specially crafted blood-drawing artifact in Lu Chen's hand, its massive body couldn't help but shudder, and it obediently lay on the ground.
The sharp artifact easily pierced through the snake's black scales, and a fountain of blood gushed out, quickly filling the container.
After drawing the blood, Lu Chen took out a bottle of solvent from his storage bag, emitting a strange odor. This was a special solvent given to him by the old fox, capable of merging and purifying the blood of various demonic beasts.
The giant snake's blood was black-red and highly toxic. Just the scent of it made one feel dizzy and nauseous.
Lu Chen poured the black-red blood into the strange solvent, and instantly, the blood reacted violently, turning an even deeper shade of black as if trying to suck in Lu Chen's spiritual sense.
He carefully stored the processed serpent blood and proceeded to another stone cave as instructed by the old fox.
Disabling the restrictions, he beheld a bizarre toad the size of a millstone. Its skin was a vibrant rainbow of colors, clearly indicating extreme toxicity, and with each breath, tendrils of poisonous smoke wafted out.
The toad glared at Lu Chen with malevolent eyes as he extended the blood-drawing artifact, but it remained still, its gaze filled with resentment.
"Don't look at me like that; you're making me nervous," Lu Chen said, a smile playing at the corners of his mouth.
With a forceful push, the needle-like artifact easily penetrated the toad's thick skin. The massive toad couldn't help but tremble violently from the pain.
"Oops, my bad. Wrong spot. Let's try again," Lu Chen said, withdrawing the artifact and carefully selecting another spot before plunging it back into the toad's body.
The toad beast howled in even greater agony.
Still, no blood emerged in the artifact.
"I'm a bit rusty; it'll definitely work if I try a few more times," Lu Chen said, a hint of embarrassment in his voice.
He repeatedly withdrew and inserted the artifact several times before finally drawing out a tube of rainbow-colored demonic beast essence blood.
"Remember, don't give me that look in the future, or I'll get nervous," Lu Chen said with a laugh.
After purifying the rainbow-colored blood with the special solvent, it transformed into a different form of liquid. Suspended within the solution were rainbow-colored orbs, condensed to their utmost limit, resembling a starry sky.
Holding his breath, Lu Chen poured the black essence blood he had obtained from the giant snake into the container.
Instantly, the solution reacted violently.
Upon contact with the black essence blood, the rainbow-colored orbs exploded like fireworks, leaving behind tufts of rainbow-colored fluff.
"It failed," Lu Chen whispered, recording the reaction of the two purified essences in his book.
As for the mixed essence blood after the failure, he casually tossed it into the Blood Sin Flower's pouch.
"Feeding it to the Blood Sin Flower is a good idea. After all, it's an eerie spiritual plant, and this mixed essence blood might be a great supplement for it."
During this period, his daily tasks were simple. Initially, he would observe the breeding conditions of the demon beasts and find ways to maintain their mating.
As he gradually became more familiar with the process and gained the old fox's trust, he began to draw essence blood from the beasts and, after treating it with a special solvent, observe whether the selected blood produced a positive reaction.
However, each experiment ended in failure. Instead of discarding these failed samples, Lu Chen stored them in his Gluttonous Worm Pouch and fed them to the Blood Sin Flower and Spirit Palm Blood Ginseng, among other eerie spirit plants.
Through these experiments, he gained a profound understanding of the diversity of demon beast essence blood. The various essence blood samples displayed a wide range of colors and characteristics, each unique to the beast it came from.
After diligently carrying out his blood-drawing duties day after day, the Qingqiu Fox decided to increase his workload.
"There's something else I need you to do from now on."
The ancient fox spirit beast, its voice sounding increasingly frail and weary, summoned Lu Chen.
"Please, go ahead," Lu Chen replied respectfully, having long since grown accustomed to their interaction dynamic.
"As you are already aware, there are numerous special fierce beasts within the forbidden land, each a chimera of different fierce beast bodies, limbs, and heads stitched together."
"Your task is simple: tend to and observe these chimeric beasts. Record their conditions in detail, and should any abnormalities occur, contact me immediately."
The old fox concluded its instructions and handed Lu Chen a dark green talisman, seemingly crafted from its own fur. The talisman felt remarkably soft and supple, akin to skin, when held in his hand.
"Understood," Lu Chen nodded.
Following the ancient fox's guidance, he ventured to the lowest level of the pit, where he encountered the specially crafted beasts with transplanted organs and bodies.
Upon entering the stone cave, he was greeted by a multi-eyed octopus-like beast. Its numerous tentacles, resembling a pile of sludge, lay limp on the ground, each tip bearing the transplanted eye of a different demon beast. The sutured areas oozed putrid pus, emitting a nauseating stench.
Lu Chen produced a pile of water-attribute demon beasts and placed them before the multi-eyed octopus.
The chimeric beast listlessly lifted one of its tentacles; the eye at its tip opened, and it grabbed a spiritual fish over half a zhang long, devouring it whole.
After consuming just one fish, it closed its eyes, showing no interest in the remaining meat.
"This doesn't seem right," Lu Chen frowned, sensing that something was amiss. He focused his spiritual sense on the beast.
Instantly, a message appeared in his mind.
【Unknown Chimeric Beast, Fourth-Rank. A Fourth-Rank Black Breath Giant Octopus infused with a thousand transplanted demon beast eyes, undergoing unknown changes.】
【Due to spiritual energy rejection, its vitality is weak and nearing extinction.】
"I never expected that I'd be able to see the detailed status of these transplanted chimeric beasts," Lu Chen exclaimed, initially pleased as he once again witnessed the power of his unique ability.
"But you're just a failed product. A pity."
"There's no saving you. You're beyond help," he remarked, passing a judgment of death upon the octopus-like beast lying helplessly on the cave floor. He casually made a note of his observation.
"With this ability, none of the experimental beasts within the forbidden land can hide anything from me. Whether they live or die, and how they might be saved—it's all clear to me at a glance. I was born for this kind of experiment."
