Chapter 464: Celebration
Chapter 464: Celebration
Fred and George's idea of extending the match to five days did not come to fruition.
After an hour of gameplay, Ireland's Linzi spotted the Golden Snitch, and Krum saw it too.
The winged golden ball was hovering about five feet above the ground.
They both accelerated and dived towards it at an astonishing speed.
"They're going to crash!" Hermione screamed.
"No way!" Ron said firmly, "Krum is the best Seeker!"
"But Linzi will!" Harry, Cedric, and Charlie almost shouted simultaneously.
They were right. Linzi crashed heavily into the ground for the second time.
The mermaids were thrilled, and a swarm of gnomes rushed towards them, cackling with laughter.
Krum, however, steadied his flying broom at the last moment. He skimmed close to the ground for a while and then gracefully rose into the air, raising his fist high, with a glint of gold between his fingers.
"Krum caught the Golden Snitch! The match is over!" Harry shouted.
The scoreboard flashed with the score: 170 to 160.
"Ireland wins!" Bagman shouted, but there was a hint of confusion in his voice, as if he was dazed by the sudden end of the match.
"Krum caught the Snitch, but Ireland won... Good heavens, I don't think anyone expected the match to end like this!"
Not just him, most of the Bulgarian supporters were equally puzzled.
In their opinion, Krum had successfully stopped the Chasers, so he should have given up on catching the Snitch until his teammates reduced the point gap to within 150 points.
That's how it had been done in previous years.
Like the last time, the match lasted for five days because the point gap was too large... The losing team's Seeker kept delaying and did everything to prevent the other team from catching the Snitch.
But Krum... Many people thought it was foolish of him to end the match when Ireland was leading by 160 points.
"Perhaps he knew the score was impossible to catch up with," Kyle said, looking at Ron, who was full of regret. "The Chasers' gap was too big. His judgment was correct; ending the match at this point was the best choice."
Losing by 10 points was a pity, but at least it sounded better than losing by a huge margin.
If the match had continued, and they had lost by 500 or even 1000 points, it would have been impolite.
Not only would it have been embarrassing, but the players' reputations would have suffered greatly. So, ending the match at this point was the most appropriate decision.
Kyle looked towards the field again.
The gnomes were ecstatic, flying around wildly, but you could still see that the Bulgarian players were surrounding Krum, shaking their heads, and looking dejected.
Not far away, the Irish players on the champion team were joyfully dancing, and their mascot was once again showering the field with a rain of golden coins.
The mermaids returned to their original beautiful forms, but they all looked dejected, with furrowed brows and long faces.
"I say we fought bravely," said a heavy voice behind Kyle, belonging to the Bulgarian Minister of Magic.
"Yes, that's right..." Fudge said subconsciously, but then he suddenly froze.
"You just... Wait a minute, so you could understand my words and make me stay here all day!"
"Hey, isn't that fun?" The Bulgarian Minister shrugged, "I'm enjoying it."
Fudge was quite upset, and even when he presented the trophy to the champion team later, he didn't look very happy.
Meanwhile, the Bulgarian Minister beside him kept smiling happily, as if they were the real winners.
At this moment, Bagman once again placed his wand against his throat and whispered, "Quietus."
"I dare say this match will be talked about for years to come," he said hoarsely, "It's an unexpected twist... What a pity the match didn't last longer."
He glanced down at the field.
The match was over, and it was time to leave, but some people didn't leave the stadium; instead, they moved towards the top box, in the opposite direction of the exit.
They were mostly wearing shamrock accessories and chatting and laughing with each other.
Bagman also noticed these people, and his face suddenly turned a bit pale.
"Sorry, Arthur," he said, no longer chatting with Mr. Weasley, "I have something else to do. See you next time."
With that, he quickly left the box and disappeared into the crowd in the blink of an eye.
