Chapter 464: Ambush
Chapter 464: Ambush
As the combat personnel rushed forward, the convoy ahead suddenly accelerated several kilometers away.
Almost simultaneously, the convoy that had previously passed them by had turned around and was now approaching from their rear.
From the sky above, the entire convoy was now sandwiched between two forces.
Upon receiving the report of trouble from the front, Yao Advisor knew something was amiss. He quickly ordered all members to ready their firearms and instructed the rear vehicles to move forward, forming a defensive formation to block the oncoming assault. Machine guns were mounted on the rooftops, aiming at the front and sides.
Even with the advantage of the Mystic Bureau's rituals, firearms remained the most convenient and effective tool.
However, Yao Advisor knew this wasn't enough. He immediately contacted a small number of Mystic Bureau members inside.
Several members promptly exited their vehicles, taking cover behind the convoy's front vehicles. They laid out large bundles of carpet-like objects on the ground and hammered them down at the edges, creating a visual distortion for those at a distance.
These Mystic patterns prevented the enemy from observing them normally, causing a visual misperception.
The enemy's implanted combat personnel advanced swiftly, reaching them in no time. But even faster were the combat beasts, who flew from the sky, only to be affected by the biological field as they drew near, causing them to fall one by one.
The fighters and gunners in the convoy shot them down, seemingly to no avail.
Yao Advisor didn't feel relieved. If the enemy had come to attack them, they must be aware of their identities. These combat beasts were likely sent to test the rituals, making it easier for the subsequent ambush.
As expected, after the first wave of combat beasts, the enemy forces realized their setup and accelerated towards them.
Behind these forces, some attempted to provide support by raising their guns. However, as soon as one of them took aim, a sniper from Yao Advisor's side fired, causing the enemy's head to snap back, and they fell to the ground instantly. Even with enhanced skulls, they couldn't withstand the precision of long-range firearms.
The machine gunners on the rooftops opened fire. The enemy forces, witnessing the intense gunfire, didn't charge head-on but split up, attempting to flank them from both sides.
Yao Advisor, observing the situation, noticed more enemy snipers joining the fight. He decisively used the Interdimensional Link and ordered, "Everyone, put on your gas masks and throw smoke grenades!"
As the order was given, the convoy members hurled canisters, creating a series of explosions around the convoy and on the road. Thick smoke billowed, obscuring the area.
This specialized smoke was designed to block vision and call for backup. With their special goggles, Yao Advisor's team could identify the situation outside the smoke, creating a tactical advantage.
However, the day's weather worked against them. The wind from the wilderness was strong, dispersing much of the smoke, and it showed no signs of letting up. Still, even a little cover was better than none.
As the smoke rose, the enemy didn't recklessly charge in, and the machine gunners on Yao Advisor's side also held their fire, using the smoke to cover their snipers as they picked off targets.
It seemed they could hold their ground. The radio had already sent distress calls to the Central City and various outposts for reinforcements. They weren't far from the Central City, and if the support team arrived in time, they could break free.
Just as the situation appeared to stabilize, a transport truck suddenly sped towards them, seemingly intent on ramming through the blocking vehicles.
Before Yao Advisor could give the order, the machine gunners opened fire. The truck's tires were blown out in no time, and it flipped onto its side, blocking the road and providing cover for the enemy.
After a while, two loud explosions echoed through the convoy.
One explosion hit an armed vehicle directly, causing it to shake. The machine gunner on top was instantly killed, and shrapnel sprayed in all directions, affecting several other armed vehicles within a ten-meter radius.
The other explosion landed in an open area, causing no casualties but blowing out a vehicle's tires. The smoke and rituals had played a role.
Yao Advisor's expression changed, "Mortars?!"
The mortar was initially positioned by the ambush team at the front, waiting for the convoy to come within range. However, the convoy had stopped several kilometers away, making it difficult to hit their target accurately. So, they carried the mortar closer to launch it.
Yao Advisor knew this was a problem. If they didn't take out those mortars, they'd be at the enemy's mercy. Sending someone out now would be too late, and the enemy was surely prepared. He immediately used the Interdimensional Link to call for sniper support.
"Take out those two mortar operators!"
Upon hearing the command, the snipers immediately opened fire, but to little effect, as several shields had been erected in front of the mortars, forcing them to change positions.
The two snipers didn't give up; they attempted to find a new vantage point, but as soon as they reached the edge of the convoy, they came under fire from the opposing snipers, preventing them from advancing any further, and a shootout ensued.
This delay allowed two more mortar shells to land within the convoy, but fortunately, the smoke cover prevented any direct hits.
However, this situation couldn't continue.
Yao Advisor's brows furrowed with concern. The enemy had numerous combat personnel, and to destroy those two mortars, he would have to step forward himself. But the problem was that the enemy had at least one Third Limit Fighter, and possibly more hidden in the shadows. His primary responsibility was to protect Director Lei, and leaving his position would give the enemy an opportunity.
Meanwhile, in the rear of the convoy, Chen Chuan sensed the situation. He knew that Yao Advisor alone might struggle to handle this, so he instructed Wu Han and Wei Dong to join him.
Chen Chuan then pushed open the door, stepped out of the vehicle, and emerged from the smoke-covered convoy. As soon as he appeared, he slightly tilted his head, and a bullet whizzed past him.
He paid it no mind and focused on the direction of the mortars.
Judging by his estimation, they were about two to three hundred meters away. He had no intention of charging forward; instead, he reached into his pocket and pulled out several stones of varying sizes.
At that moment, the Alienated Organization within his body stirred, and with a surge of energy, he forcefully swung his arm!
The shield in front of the mortars was instantly struck as if by a heavy hammer, flipping backward, and the two mortar operators behind it had their skulls blown apart.
A nearby individual attempted to rush forward and raise a shield to fill the gap, but after taking only two steps, a gunshot rang out, and their head exploded in a spray of blood. The sniper at the rear, seeing the absence of the shield, seized the opportunity.
Chen Chuan, witnessing this, didn't bother with the situation and instead quickly moved to the other side. He casually threw a stone, knocking away the shield, and the sniper in the convoy swiftly eliminated the remaining mortar operator.
Yao Advisor, seeing this from behind, felt somewhat relieved, but he didn't sense much relaxation. He could tell that a major power was behind this attack, not to mention the presence of artillery and dozens of Implant Combatants, and the Combat Beasts he had seen numbered at least a hundred. This was enough to wage a small-scale war.
In a 6-9-1-9-1, the book was a perfect version!
If it weren't for the fact that their escort convoy was also Super-Spec, and Chen Chuan had temporarily joined the convoy, they might have crumbled under the enemy's initial assault.
At that moment, a message came through the Interdimensional Link, stating that a suspected Union Heavy Transport convoy had turned back but was now blocked behind them.
Upon hearing this, he secretly felt relieved. Fortunately, he had listened to Chen Chuan's instructions and had scattered tire spikes and placed numerous tire deflators on the rear road, and not just in one spot, but at intervals, forcing the enemy vehicles to stop and clear the obstacles.
This bought them some time and prevented a two-front assault.
With the mortars neutralized, the enemy didn't dare to charge the machine gun-defended convoy, and both sides began a long-range shootout, as if stuck in a stalemate.
Yao Advisor's expression turned solemn; he believed this situation wouldn't last long, as the enemy's Third Limit Fighter hadn't joined the battle yet.
Once these fighters burst in at high speed, the snipers in his team would struggle to react. If no suitable person stepped forward to block them, it would only take a moment for the entire situation, which was barely holding, to collapse.
Therefore, the outcome would depend on the confrontation between the two fighters.
As he was thinking this, he stiffened, for he saw a figure suddenly appear in his line of sight.
Although dressed like a combat personnel, the speed they displayed clearly marked them as a Third Limit Fighter. He fixed his gaze on this person's figure.
However, whether out of caution or for some other reason, the fighter merely stood there, observing the convoy without advancing.
But he dared not let his guard down. He mentally prepared himself, ready to confront the fighter if they entered, while Director Lei's protection would temporarily fall to Chen Chuan's side.
At that moment, an extended armored vehicle was approaching from the side, with Jian Chengsheng seated in the rear, holding a blade and gazing forward.
Although the battle ahead was intense, with many strange things he had never seen on the island, they had little effect on a person like him. So, he didn't pay much attention, only anticipating the arrival of his opponent.
The vehicle reached the front, slowly coming to a stop. Someone hurried forward to open the door, while the person in the front passenger seat turned and said, "Mr. Jian Chengsheng, we've arrived. We're counting on you."
Jian Chengsheng replied solemnly, "Leave it to me." He then picked up his blade and stepped out of the vehicle.
