Chapter 463: Lanchi, the Riddler
Chapter 463: Lanchi, the Riddler
In the meeting area of the Principal's Office on the fifth floor of Redmond Tower, the topic of conversation regarding Associate Professor Cid was sidetracked by Duke Morotian, who gracefully steered the discussion elsewhere, especially since Lanchi always apologized with a hint of grievance, making the amiable duke feel a bit embarrassed.
However, the real purpose of his visit today was not to demand an explanation. He simply wanted to meet with Rocky McCarthy, exchange greetings, and avoid any awkwardness when they met again in three days during the bishop election.
"I won't take up too much of your rest time, Principal McCarthy, especially since you've already finished work for the day. But I am curious about one thing, and it's the main reason for my visit today. I believe Warden Bakas asked you the same question earlier." With a keen interest, Duke Morotian shifted the topic and asked, "Who will you vote for in the bishop election in three days?"
"Bishop Askesan, the Bishop of Obliteration," Lanchi replied without hesitation.
Unlike Warden Bakas, this response gave Duke Morotian a moment of surprise.
"Oh, it seems we have different opinions," he said with a smile and a shake of his head.
"Who will Duke Berenhald be voting for?" Lanchi asked out of curiosity, as if seeking guidance from Duke Morotian.
The duke didn't answer immediately but leaned forward slightly. "Bishop Sigrid of the Dominant Church," he replied softly, a hint of amusement in his voice.
As Lanchi's confusion grew, Duke Morotian observed his expression.
"It all depends on whether she dares to show up," the duke added, his smile carrying a hint of enigmatic meaning in his eyes as if asking Lanchi, "Don't you think so, too?"
"...”
But Lanchi gave no response, his eyes clouded with confusion before clearing up, as if he had only just understood the duke's implication.
"Do you mean, Duke Berenhald, that the Dominant Church is accused of the heinous crime of massacring civilians?" Lanchi inquired.
"Of course," Duke Morotian agreed. "Her recent seclusion is a wise move. If she were to appear in public beforehand, there's a chance the Imperial Army could interfere with her participation in the election through official procedures. However, if she were to show up directly on the day of the election, the Imperial Army wouldn't be able to interrupt due to priority considerations. But the prerequisite is that she must be confident of winning. Otherwise, she might truly face irreversible consequences if she loses."
Duke Morotian's words seemed to convey that if Sigrid was confident enough to appear, it was likely because she believed she could win, and he, too, hoped to see her at the bishop election.
"I haven't thought that deeply into it," Lanchi replied. "I simply wish for the best for Askesan. It's a case of a prodigal son returning, and I hope he can seize this rare opportunity to walk the path of righteousness."
In the administrative office next door, Antanas listened to the enigmatic exchange between these two men, feeling that Planai's words held some truth. Although they were conversing amicably, there seemed to be hidden meanings in their words, but she couldn't quite decipher what they truly meant.
Back in the Principal's Office, the conversation between the two men didn't last much longer. Duke Morotian glanced at the clock and felt it was about time to take his leave.
"Mr. Rocky McCarthy, your rise has been swift. In the brief time I was away from the imperial capital, Helrom, a new star like you has emerged, and even investigating your past records has proven difficult." As he stood up and gazed out at the rain, the duke continued, "But meeting you today has put my heart at ease. I'm glad to see that the Protoss Empire has someone like you."
"Thank you for your kind words, Duke," Lanchi said with a smile, lifting his teacup to his lips.
"Speaking of which, Principal McCarthy, do you feel that we've met somewhere before?" Duke Morotian turned to look at Lanchi.
"..."
Lanchi took a sip of his tea, deep in thought.
"Then I shall take my leave," said the duke when he received no response. Without intending to linger further, he bid his farewell and walked around the tea table toward the door of the principal's office.
"Who knows if we've met before? As the saying goes, all encounters are but reunions after a long separation. Don't you agree, Duke Berenhald?" Lanchi set down his teacup and replied.
"..."
Duke Berenhald, who had been about to grasp the doorknob to leave, paused for a moment.
Morotian slowly raised the half-pressed door handle, then turned around with his ever-present smile still on his face.
"Mr. Rocky McCarthy, I have one more question."
Duke Morotian opened the door, and the howling wind from the corridor rushed in, causing the temperature in the principal's office to drop several degrees.
"Please speak."
"I personally feel that your style of handling things sometimes leads to choices that are not optimal, as you take into account many people and matters that are not related to you. This may also lead to you being deeply entangled in danger. I'm worried about you, and I want to know what drives you to do these things, or why you involve yourself in matters that are not related to you?"
Duke Morotian asked, a hint of confusion in his brows.
"Those unrelated matters are related to me."
Lanchi stood up and replied nonchalantly, seeing the guest out.
"..."
Duke Morotian stared at Lanchi, as if considering something.
Outside the window, lightning flashed and thunder rumbled, occasionally illuminating the silhouettes of the two men in the dim office.
"Do you need an umbrella, Duke Berenhald?"
Lanchi took out an umbrella from one of the drawers in the cabinet and asked.
"No, thank you. It was nice to meet you, Mr. Rocky McCarthy."
Duke Morotian bade farewell to Lanchi, and as he closed the door behind him, the cold air in the office dissipated as if his earlier visit had merely been a playful joke.
...
On the other side of the fifth floor of Redmond Tower.
Standing by the window, Planai and Antanas kept watch until they saw Duke Morotian completely leave the Protoss Royal Magic Academy.
They heaved a sigh of relief.
With Antanas taking over the authority of the ancient academy's barrier from Lanchi, she could sense the happenings around the academy with her innate magical powers and provide quick support. She had also set up a barrier to shield the offices near the principal's office.
The earlier thunderous rumbles had made them feel that with every peal of thunder, undead creatures might swarm the Protoss Royal Magic Academy.
Shinola had been listening to Planai's explanation of the conversation between the King and Duke Morotian, and although she had some suspicions, there was no concrete evidence.
The exchange between the King and Duke Morotian seemed calm on the surface, but it was like the calm before a storm, foreshadowing an impending battle.
If Duke Morotian had intended to take action against the King earlier, they would have pulled him into battle immediately.
After seeing Duke Morotian off, the three great demons continued to monitor the campus for a while before leaving the office together and making their way to the principal's office door.
Planai knocked on the door.
"Come in."
Lanchi's voice remained as gentle as ever, a calm contrast to the raging thunderstorm outside.
As they opened the door and stepped into the office, the three great demons entered.
"Why didn't you keep him here just now, King? Don't you think Duke Morotian was already very suspicious? That riddle-lover deserved a beating!"
Antanas blurted out, unable to hold back any longer.
She didn't know if the King truly didn't understand Duke Morotian's implications or if he had other considerations.
But upon further thought, she realized she might have insulted the new King as well.
Antanas despised people who spoke in riddles, and Duke Morotian was clearly a master of them. Fortunately, the new King was also adept at riddles, so according to the theory of relativity of riddles, neither had truly out-riddled the other.
Consequently, apart from Planai, who might have understood something, she and Shinola were completely lost during the deep and enigmatic conversation between the new King and Duke Morotian.
"..."
Planai remained silent.
He could guess that if Duke Morotian were truly an enemy, killing Rocky McCarthy here, within the interference range of the ancient academy's barrier, would likely cause quite a stir. If Duke Morotian had killed Rocky McCarthy with his own hands, it might have caused unnecessary major problems on the eve of the bishop election. So, even if he were an enemy, he probably wouldn't have made a move today.
And if they had started a fight within the Protoss Royal Magic Academy, although they would have the home-field advantage, it would undoubtedly have caused severe damage to the school and casualties among the students and staff.
The King's kindness was not an act, as his actions were consistently benevolent.
"The school is not a place for fighting."
Lanchi stood with his hands behind his back, looking out the window, before finally turning his face slightly to regard the three great demons.
"The ultimate battle is not for today."
No one knew what his emerald-green irises had witnessed.
