Chapter 461: Trust Issues
Chapter 461: Trust Issues
Kang Huijuan had turned herself in to the police, and Lu Jiaxin soon learned of this development. This turn of events caught her by surprise, as she had expected the Nie family to cover up the matter for the sake of the three children, allowing it to blow over quietly.
Yan Yijun asked, "Boss, should we head back now?"
Lu Jiaxin, gazing at the still water with not a hint of movement on the fishing line, softly replied, "No hurry. Let's stay for a couple more days."
For these two days, she stayed by the sea, renting a house from a fisherman. The day before, she had accompanied the fisherman to an island where they collected bird eggs, wild duck eggs, and tortoise eggs. During low tide, they also gathered a plentiful harvest of fish, shrimp, and crabs.
Early the next morning, they went to the seaside to gather seafood. The sea was bountiful, and Lu Jiaxin and her companions filled two large containers with their catch. Among them, Yan Yijun's quick eyes and nimble hands secured over five jin of grouper and six redband fish, along with eels, octopuses, and yellow croakers.
Lu Jiaxin, for her part, collected eight large green crabs. She loved crabs the most, and for lunch, she prepared a feast of spicy green crabs, green crabs with glass noodles in garlic sauce, and green crabs stir-fried with rice cakes, accompanied by shrimp, top shells, and fish.
Yan Yijun and Li Qing, who had previously been restrained in their eating, threw caution to the wind and indulged in the abundance of seafood that had been brought in.
The July sun emitted strong ultraviolet rays, and after lunch, Lu Jiaxin stayed indoors, watching television or listening to the radio instead of venturing out. She was selective about the channels she watched, limiting herself to news and financial news, with no interest in dramas.
When the sun began to set around 5 p.m., she would go for a swim. Considering the impact on the small fishing village, Miao Na had chosen a more conservative swimsuit this time. However, her figure was so alluring that even this modest attire made Yan Yijun and Li Qing feel uncomfortable.
Lu Jiaxin paid no heed to their reactions. Gu Wenfeng, who had initially felt the urge to turn invisible at the sight of scantily clad beauties on the beach, had become desensitized after a few days and no longer paid them much mind.
In the evening, Lu Jiaxin took another stroll by the sea. Feeling the sand beneath her feet, soft and fine like goose down, she kicked off her shoes and walked barefoot, reveling in the sensation of the sand caressing her soles.
When she grew tired, Lu Jiaxin sat directly on the sand. The night was beautiful, with the moon casting a sprinkle of silvery light on the sea's surface.
The sea breeze rustled through the trees along the shore, creating a soothing susurrus.
Miao Na's eyelids twitched as she watched her boss nonchalantly lounging on the sand. Lu Jiaxin was fastidious at home, but here, she threw caution to the wind and embraced a free-spirited attitude, making her truly inscrutable.
As Lu Jiaxin admired the beautiful scenery, she suddenly lay down on the sand and asked Miao Na about her dreams with a smile.
Miao Na thought for a moment before replying, "When I was little, I dreamed of becoming a ballet dancer and performing on the stage of the Flower Capital Opera House one day."
Life was full of twists and turns; the little girl who once dreamed of being a dancer had ended up as a mercenary.
Lu Jiaxin smiled and asked, "Do you know what my dream was when I was little?"
Without hesitation, Miao Na replied, "To become a top designer internationally?"
Lu Jiaxin shook her head. "No, my dream when I was little was for my family to live happily together forever. But that dream will forever remain just a dream."
Even though her parents had divorced after her college entrance examination, the impact on her had been profound. One of the consequences was that she found it hard to believe in love again. And after her parents remarried and started their own families, even though they still loved her, things were inevitably different, especially after they had children of their own. The concept of "home" in her heart had irreversibly changed.
Miao Na, knowing her boss's history, fell silent for a moment before saying, "You're living a very happy life now. Your mother must be very pleased as she looks down from above."
Lu Jiaxin smiled but remained silent.
The sea breeze was soothing, lulling one toward sleep.
Lu Jiaxin contemplated buying a plot of land and building a villa here, but she quickly dismissed the thought. Seawater was corrosive, and while the exterior walls of a house might withstand it, the interior decorations would be prone to damage. She already spent little time at home, and renovating every three to four years would be too troublesome.
Miao Na hesitated before speaking up, "Boss, we've been out for two days now. Shouldn't we head back?"
Lu Jiaxin narrowed her eyes as if she were about to doze off, and Miao Na knew that she didn't want to return just yet.
Early the next morning, Lu Jiaxin was up before dawn to join the fishermen again. In her past life, she had joined them once, and apart from small shrimp and thumb-sized crabs, she hadn't caught any fish, let alone the five-pound grouper and fiddler crabs they had this time. Their rarity made them all the more precious.
After returning from the beach, Lu Jiaxin washed from head to toe before calling Su Heyuan.
Hearing her voice, Su Heyuan secretly breathed a sigh of relief. "Jiaxin, where have you been? You know, Nie Zhan has been looking for you everywhere. It's one thing that you went to the mainland without telling her, but your phone has been unreachable too."
Lu Jiaxin's expression remained calm. "Do you know why I didn't answer his calls?"
Su Heyuan's face immediately changed. "Did he do something to wrong you?" "No, he cherishes you too much to look for another woman."
To prevent him from continuing his wild guesses, Lu Jiaxin said, "The mastermind behind my kidnapping was Kang Huijuan. Yesterday, I received news that she turned herself in to the police."
"Ah..."
Su Heyuan flew into a rage. No wonder Lu Jiaxin didn't want to see Nie Zhan. If he were in her shoes, he wouldn't want to deal with him either. Although he was annoyed at Nie Zhan, he still said, "Although Nie Zhan is indirectly involved in the kidnapping, I don't think he wanted this to happen. Jiaxin, you can't keep avoiding him. If you want to break up, you should at least do it face to face."
A three-legged toad was hard to find, but two-legged men were everywhere. Nie Zhan was great, but with Lu Jiaxin's credentials, she could find someone even better.
Lu Jiaxin said, "If anyone should be hiding, it's Kang Huijuan, not me. I just needed some time away to clear my mind and plan for the future."
"So, have you figured out your plans?"
"More or less. I'll fill you in when I get back to Hong Kong."
"When are you coming back?"
"Tomorrow."
After hanging up, Su Heyuan waited a while before calling Nie Zhan. "Why did Kang Huijuan kidnap Jiaxin?"
Nie Zhan hurriedly asked, "Is Jiaxin back?"
Knowing that Lu Jiaxin didn't want to see Nie Zhan yet, Su Heyuan didn't tell the truth. "She's still upset and wants to stay out for a couple more days. Nie Zhan, why did Kang Huijuan kidnap Jiaxin?"
Mentioning Kang Huijuan, Nie Zhan's anger flared. "Jiaxin is from the mainland, and she looks down on her. But now that Jiaxin is doing better than her, she's filled with jealousy and hatred."
"Is that all?"
"Yes," Nie Zhan replied. In truth, he suspected there were other reasons as well, but he didn't dare voice them. After the incident at the hotel, he had abandoned the project halfway, causing his grandfather to be furious and demand that Nie Jingwen personally pay the compensation. His businesses had also been taken back by his grandfather. Kang Huijuan must have resented him for that; plus, Jingting always used Jiaxin to put her down, saying that despite being from the mainland, Jiaxin was better than her in every way. Instead of reflecting on her own issues, she blamed others and was deemed very 'low' by Kang Huijuan.
Kang Huijuan resented him and Jingting but dared not take revenge on them, so she took it out on Jiaxin instead. She probably thought Jiaxin had no backing, so she wanted to teach her a lesson by hiring some thugs.
Su Heyuan scolded, "Your careless actions put Jiaxin in danger. She was lucky this time, but what about next time? Will she always be this fortunate?"
"There won't be a next time."
"I don't believe that, and neither does Jiaxin. She doesn't trust you anymore."
