Chapter 461: Sirius Black Regains His Freedom
Chapter 461: Sirius Black Regains His Freedom
Although Ivan believed that even if the truth came out, he could explain it, Mrs. Pettigrew would certainly be furious!
Ivan thought it was best not to provoke her, so she wouldn't faint in the courtroom.
However, there was one thing that seemed odd, so he spoke up. "Chief Warlock, I would like to ask why she was allowed to bring a cane, no, I mean a Wand, in here?"
"Because Mrs. Pettigrew informed us that without this cane, she can't walk!" the Chief Warlock replied with a hint of exasperation.
Ivan pursed his lips in dissatisfaction. How could he not see it? The Old Witch had been quite agile when she tried to hit Sirius Black with her cane!
While Ivan silently ranted, Mrs. Pettigrew clung to the last shred of hope and requested to examine Dumbledore's Wand.
The outcome was predictable; neither of the two Wands had been used to cast a Memory Charm in the past four days.
The only minor hiccup was that the Aurors couldn't force the Elder Wand to reveal its spell history. It was only after Dumbledore personally intervened that the issue was resolved.
"Chief Warlock, I believe Mrs. Pettigrew has no further doubts. Now that the evidence is clear, can we proceed with the verdict?" Dumbledore, having retrieved the Elder Wand, looked up and fixed his gaze on the Chief Warlock.
The Old Witch appeared dispirited, mumbling to herself, though no one could make out what she was saying.
"Ah, it seems so", the Chief Warlock said, looking at the Old Witch with disappointment. As a judge, he couldn't be too biased, so he continued, "We heard Mr. Hals's testimony clearly, but to confirm Mr. Pettigrew's guilt, we need to hear from other witnesses! Mr. Hals, you may leave now. Please bring in the next witness!"
As the Chief Warlock finished speaking, an Auror approached Ivan, signaling for him to follow.
Seeing that his part was done, Ivan was more than happy to leave. He politely nodded to everyone and turned to exit the sealed courtroom.
As soon as he stepped into the waiting room, Harry and the others rushed over, bombarding him with questions.
"Ivan, you're back! How did it go?"
"Did we win the case?"
Ivan didn't hide anything and briefly recounted what had happened in the courtroom, while casually glancing at Ron's Wand, feeling quite relieved.
Three days ago, on the Astronomy Tower, he had used Ron's Wand to cast the Memory Charm, so Mrs. Pettigrew would never find out.
"Mr. Harry Potter, please come with me", the Auror behind Ivan interrupted, addressing Harry seriously.
"Me?" Harry pointed to himself, though he had expected it, he still felt nervous about going up.
"It's fine, Dumbledore and Sirius are there", Ivan reassured him with a smile.
In his view, the outcome of the trial was already decided after his testimony, so Harry and the others were just going through the motions.
With Ivan's words, Harry felt much more at ease and followed the Auror to the courtroom.
Ivan remained in the waiting room, chatting with Ron and Hermione while waiting for the verdict.
Over the next hour, Ron and Hermione were called out one after the other, and Harry returned to the waiting room after giving his testimony.
However, Harry's expression looked a bit strange. He looked at Ivan, hesitated, and finally couldn't help but ask.
"Ivan, what exactly did you say to them in court? I feel like a lot of people are looking at me oddly, and some strange lady even asked if I wanted to move in with her!"
"Nothing much, I just mentioned a bit about your life with your aunt and uncle. They felt a bit sorry for you, that's all!" Ivan replied with a smile.
"That's all in the past!" Harry said nonchalantly. "I've already discussed it with Sirius. I'll be moving into the Black family mansion this summer!"
Ivan opened his mouth to object, as Dumbledore would never allow Harry to leave the Dursleys' house. But he quickly closed his mouth again. Dumbledore would explain it eventually, so there was no need for him to be the bad guy.
The two of them waited in the waiting room for a long time.
Just as Ivan was getting impatient and starting to complain about the slow trial process, Hermione and Ron finally returned to the waiting room, accompanied by an Auror, bringing some good news. The verdict had been announced!
"Really? What happened?" Harry stood up immediately, excitedly asking.
"Sirius was declared innocent in court, and Peter Pettigrew has been found guilty on over twenty charges, including the murder of thirteen Muggles, exposing the magical world, and war crimes", Hermione repeated what the Chief Warlock had said.
"That's great!" Harry was so happy he almost jumped for joy.
"Did the Chief Warlock say how Peter would be punished?" Ivan was curious about this point.
"Of course, Peter will—"
Hermione was about to speak, but someone else beat her to it.
"The Ministry originally wanted to imprison him for life, but Peter is an Animagus, and it wouldn't be easy to keep him locked up. The Ministry can't afford to have Aurors watching him every day, so they've decided to give him the Dementor's Kiss in seven days!"
Everyone turned to look, and it was Sirius who had walked in from outside, the handcuffs that had bound his hands now removed.
Although he still looked a bit disheveled from his time in prison, a smile was spreading across his face.
"Sirius, congratulations, you're finally free!" Ivan said, offering his congratulations.
"I owe you a lot, Hals!" Sirius was very grateful. He had learned from Dumbledore, Harry, and others about everything Ivan had done over the past few months.
Sirius was very clear that he owed much of his exoneration to this young wizard. Otherwise, he would still be worrying about the Ministry's pursuit, and at best, he might have managed to sneak into Hogwarts to kill Peter, but the truth would never have come to light.
Ivan waved his hand, telling Sirius not to worry about it. He was just fulfilling a previous agreement, and then he added with a joke, "Besides, I did get a Firebolt out of it, so of course I had to do something."
"Ha ha ha, if you like it, I'll buy a few more for you!" With his name cleared, Sirius seemed quite proud and unconcerned about money.
