Chapter 460: Game Day - Wishing Star
Chapter 460: Game Day - Wishing Star
The next afternoon, Naoki's newly ordered 3DS arrived.
After signing for the package, he started playing games with the Aikanshi siblings.
The game was called "Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team," a spin-off set in the Pokemon world. Unlike the Rescue Team series Naoki was familiar with, this game had a different twist.
It featured a large map divided into smaller dungeons, where players controlled a team of Pokemon exploring the mysteries within.
These dungeons were fraught with dangers, including hostile Pokemon, treacherous traps, and challenging terrain.
However, with danger came opportunity. Pokemon could also find various treasures and items within, such as evolution stones, held items to boost their abilities, berries with diverse effects, and rare candies to boost their levels.
Players could navigate their Pokemon through these challenges, using their moves to battle enemies. Defeating foes earned experience, which could then be used to level up.
And when their Pokemon reached a certain level, they could evolve into more powerful forms.
Naoki quickly scanned the available starter Pokemon, finding ten options to choose from: Charmander, Eevee, Totodile, Squirtle, Bulbasaur, Meowth, and a few others.
According to Aikanshi's older brother, defeating the boss of the dungeon would unlock even more Pokemon choices.
Aikanshi's sister chose Eevee, her brother picked Charmander, and after understanding the game's mechanics, Naoki selected a Seedot.
With their Pokemon chosen, the trio embarked on their dungeon adventure.
The upper levels of the dungeon were relatively safe, populated by low-level Pokemon and basic items scattered across the grassy landscape.
Aikanshi's sister, a collector at heart, eagerly picked up berries that restored stamina.
Naoki and Aikanshi's brother, on the other hand, efficiently cleared out hostile Pokemon and smoothly reached Level 8.
Descending to the second level, they encountered stronger wild Pokemon.
However, with the combination of Seedot's "Stun Spore" and Charmander's "Spark," they safely cleared out this layer of wild Pokemon.
Soon after, Charmander reached Level 16 and evolved into a mighty Charmeleon.
Aikanshi's sister's Eevee also evolved into a fiery Flareon with the help of a Fire Stone.
On the third level of the dungeon, they began to encounter formidable wild Pokemon.
The most troublesome among them was a Gyarados.
Aikanshi's Charmeleon and her sister's Flareon were at a severe disadvantage against Gyarados, and two powerful Hydro Pumps left them with barely any health remaining.
Aikanshi's sister panicked, frantically rummaging through her bag for an Oran Berry to restore their health.
Her brother, however, remained calm, strategically retreating with Charmeleon. He furrowed his brow, wishing he could leap into the game and face Gyarados himself.
Fortunately, Naoki's Seedot rose to the occasion. After defeating several Magikarp that were trailing Gyarados, Seedot gained enough experience to evolve into a Nuzleaf.
With its newly learned moves, "Poisonpowder," "Sleep Powder," "Stun Spore," and "Leech Seed," they successfully took down Gyarados.
The defeated Gyarados exploded into a pile of rare candies and held items.
"Wow!" Aikanshi's sister exclaimed, her eyes shining with admiration as she looked at Naoki.
Her brother, too, was impressed by Naoki's skills.
"It was nothing," Naoki said with a grin. "I'm a Trainer, after all, and I know how to counter a Gyarados. Here, big brother, have some rare candies."
However, Aikanshi's brother felt that Naoki, who was even stronger than his evolved Pokemon, needed those candies more.
"No, Nuzleaf doesn't need to level up to evolve anymore," Naoki shook his head. "From here on out, I just need to find a Leaf Stone and a Sun Stone to evolve it into an even stronger Pokemon. Compared to Nuzleaf, your Charmeleon will get a huge power boost when it evolves into Charizard, so the next level will depend on you."
Aikanshi's brother understood.
He accepted the rare candies and fed them to his Charmeleon.
In a flash of white light, Charmeleon evolved into the majestic Charizard.
The group continued their journey. Aikanshi's sister's Flareon discovered a Leaf Stone in a tree hollow, allowing Naoki's Nuzleaf to evolve into Shiftry, who then learned moves like "Poison Jab," "Moonblast," "Moonlight," and "Substitute."
With Naoki's strategic tactics and the Aikanshi siblings' support, they navigated through dangers and reached the dungeon's deepest level.
All that remained was to defeat the boss, a fearsome Incineroar.
Naoki had expected this to be a breeze, but to his surprise, Incineroar knew combination moves!
As soon as the battle began, Incineroar let out an "Ear-Splitting Blast!"
But before he could finish, the Pangoro on the screen unleashed an Earthquake.
The ground began to shake violently, and Aikanshi's Flareon lost all its HP, becoming unable to battle.
Fortunately, at this critical moment, Naoki had Vileplume use Substitute, barely withstanding the attack.
As soon as the move ended, he started using Moonlight to recover HP.
Aikanshi's older brother, on the other hand, had his Charizard face the Pangoro, using Flamethrower.
However, the Pangoro seemed to predict its movements.
As Charizard attacked, the Pangoro stomped the ground, using Rock Blast.
Charizard, too, was defeated in one hit.
Naoki tried to block, but the Pangoro rushed towards his Vileplume after defeating Charizard and used Sky Attack, instantly defeating it.
The words "Game Over" appeared on the 3DS screen.
Outside the screen, the three Pokemon stared at each other in surprise.
Aikanshi's sister frowned. "Ai Yi! Ai Yi?" (Big brother, you lied! Didn't you say you cleared this level before?)
A drop of cold sweat formed on Aikanshi's brother's forehead.
He tried to recall. "Ai Yi..." (I don't remember clearly. The boss Pokemon back then wasn't a Pangoro, it was a Vileplume. My Charizard defeated it in two moves...)
Naoki: "..."
"Don't worry," Naoki reassured them. "It seems like the dungeon bosses change each time. This time, we were just unlucky and countered by this Pangoro. Let's try again with a new team."
Indeed, the random dungeons and challenging final bosses added a layer of excitement for players.
Moreover, the battles weren't turn-based but resembled action games.
The moves weren't limited to four options, either; players could preset their move combinations.
During battles, they could freely switch between these move sets to execute their desired attacks.
This world's GF had some interesting ideas!
Naoki decided to give it another go.
This time, based on the available Pokemon, he arranged a more versatile and well-rounded team.
Aikanshi's sister played with a Psyduck, her brother stuck with Charmander, and Naoki chose Eevee instead of Gloom.
Golduck, the evolved form of Psyduck, could use Water and Psychic-type moves, as well as Supersonic to lower the opponent's defense.
Charizard boasted a powerful combination of Fire, Flying, and Dragon moves.
Naoki intended to evolve his Eevee into Leafeon.
Before evolving, it could use Tail Wag, Charm, Voice, and Helping Hand to support Charizard, and after evolving, it could use Swords Dance and Leaf Blade in combination, along with Golduck's Supersonic.
Additionally, Leafeon could use Sunny Day to change the weather, boosting Charizard's Fire moves and triggering its ability, Chlorophyll, to increase its speed.
With the team decided, the game began anew.
Under Naoki's instructions and their mutual cooperation, they made it to the bottom floor with some close calls but no major issues.
This time, the final boss was a Infernape.
Golduck started with Supersonic, Charizard provided support from the sides, and Naoki seized the opportunity to use Sunny Day. He then maximized his attack power with Swords Dance, and with Charizard's help, they successfully defeated Infernape.
Victory!
"Ai Yi!"
The Aikanshi siblings exclaimed in delight.
As the three of them played enthusiastically, even Gorebyss and Motostoke became interested and drew closer.
Noticing their fascination with the game, Naoki asked, "Do you want to try it, too?"
"Gaou!"
Motostoke, seeing how much fun Naoki was having, wanted to give it a shot.
Frostine also looked eager to play.
Gorebyss had played before and wasn't as keen as Motostoke.
Naoki handed the game to them and took out his Rotom Phone, opening a shopping app as he said, "In that case, I'll buy a few more consoles so you can play together as a team."
Expecting that more Pokemon might want to try, Naoki ordered ten 3DS consoles at once and informed the shop owner that he would pick them up himself.
After making the order, he contacted a Dratini working part-time and gave it a request.
In just 15 minutes, the Dratini returned with a bag full of 3DS consoles.
Naoki distributed them to the Pokemon, taught them the basics of the controls, and then sat on the sofa, watching them play.
As he thought about the various features of this game, Naoki felt that some aspects were quite intriguing.
What intrigued Naoki even more was the variety of berries and treasures found within the dungeons.
"It would be great if there was a similar dungeon in the World Tree," Naoki thought.
If such a place existed, Pokemon who trained hard to become stronger would have a place to channel their energy.
Like the young Ride Palpigoat being taught by the three elder Ride Palpigoths.
It could enter the dungeon to hone its skills and become more powerful.
Even Leek Duck could go to the dungeon to practice its sword techniques.
Unfortunately, there was no such place inside the World Tree.
If one wanted to create such a place, they would have to find the Space Guardian Pokemon, Palkia, and ask it to open a spatial passage to the mysterious dungeon world, allowing Pokemon to venture within.
The mysterious dungeon could also spawn a series of quests.
For example, finding treasures, rescuing Pokemon in need, and exploring the dungeons.
If that were the case, the Explorer's Guild headquarters would truly become a hub of activity.
Pokemon from the World Tree could use it as a base to venture into the dungeons and explore.
However, up until now, Naoki had not encountered Palkia, and even if he did, Palkia might not be willing to help.
Moreover, it seemed like the two legendary Pokemon, Dialga and Palkia, didn't get along very well with Giratina.
Oh well, there was no use thinking about it.
Naoki shook his head, dismissing the idea for the time being.
As the Pokemon played their games, he turned to the Pokemon Forum and surfed the Hoenn region board.
Netizens from the Hoenn region were still actively discussing the recent appearances of Team Aqua and Team Magma.
Naoki read a post from an insider revealing that the Hoenn League Champion and Gym Leaders were all prepared to respond to the threat.
Daigo had already set out to stop the plans of the two organizations.
The Gym Leader of the Lapis Gym, Michelli, had also left her gym, and her whereabouts were unknown. Some trainers who went to challenge her found the gym closed.
"Michelli..."
Naoki's mind conjured up the image of Daigo's close friend.
Given their relationship, Daigo must have informed Michelli of everything.
Furthermore, Michelli seemed to have some connection with the people of the Luminous Village, and if Naoki's guess was correct, he feared Michelli might have joined Daigo in dealing with Groudon and Kyogre.
The situation in the Hoenn region was becoming increasingly tense. However, amidst all this, Naoki stumbled upon an unexpected hot search topic on the forum.
[The Millennium Comet is approaching! Head to the Pokemon Amusement Park to observe this seven-day spectacle!]
The Millennium Comet?
Upon seeing these words, a Pokemon name immediately popped into Naoki's head.
Jirachi! Is the time for Jirachi's movie about to arrive?
To the southwest of Chimney Mountain, directly north of Furnace Town, in an area of Hoenn known as Farhns, a man with purple hair dressed in a white tailcoat was searching for something.
"I will, I must prove myself!" Butler spoke with determination, his mind flashing back to the past.
Back then, he was a scientist for Team Magma.
During his time with Team Magma, to fulfill the mission assigned by the team leader, Maxie, Butler developed a device to resurrect Groudon using accidentally acquired fossilized remnants of Groudon's shell.
However, when he activated the device in front of Team Magma's executives, intending to begin the resurrection, the device exploded due to insufficient energy, resulting in a failed experiment.
The higher-ups of Team Magma mocked and expelled him from the team.
Butler harbored resentment towards those people. He refused to accept this reality and vowed to take revenge by resurrecting Groudon using the fossil remnants!
But to resurrect Groudon, he first needed to find a stable energy source for the device.
And so, Butler came to Farhns.
Because there was a legend in this land.
It was said that a Pokemon called the Wishing Star slumbered in Farhns.
This Pokemon awakened once every thousand years, absorbing energy from the Millennium Comet and using it to nourish Farhns, making it a more lush and beautiful place.
As long as he could find that Pokemon and harness its power, he would surely be able to operate the device and revive the ancient Groudon!
Then, he would take the resurrected Groudon to find those Team Magma executives who had ridiculed him and prove that he was right!
Just then, a hidden cave appeared before him.
Butler's eyes lit up, and he quickly ran into the cave. At the top of the cave was an opening that connected to the outside.
A ray of sunlight shone through this opening.
Within that ray of light lay a special crystal.
