Chapter 46: You Can Kneel and Bark Like a Dog Now
In the inner fortress of the Silver Moon, the council chamber.
The Viscount of Silver Moon sat alone in the grand hall, rubbing his temples and sighing heavily, his brows furrowed with worry.
Ever since the wraith incident, he hadn't had a single good night's sleep.
The ignorant commoners at the bottom of the social ladder thought the Cuvellio Manor was just haunted, treating it as idle chatter over tea and dinner. But only he knew how dire the situation truly was.
It was a wraith!
A legendary evil undead creature!
A single misstep could turn the entire Stone Bell City into a ghostly wasteland!
To deal with the wraith in the manor, he had already lost a Grand Knight and five Knights, a loss so painful it felt like his heart was bleeding.
And despite such a great sacrifice, the wraith was still very much alive and kicking, even becoming more vicious and terrifying after consuming the souls of the six Knights.
If he didn't eliminate that wraith soon, the situation would only worsen!
At the thought of this, the Viscount of Silver Moon couldn't help but grind his teeth in anger at Cuvellio, who was now locked in the dungeons.
If it weren't for this fool's inability to keep his wife from being lured by the Spark Fire Cult and bringing that evil blood-red flower into the manor, and then sealing the news to protect his reputation after the deaths, things would never have spiraled out of control to this point.
This kind of self-destructive fool deserved to be killed ten times over to quench his rage!
After taking several deep breaths, the Viscount calmed his anger and turned to the scribe beside him. "Have all the recruits arrived?"
"They have, my lord," the scribe bowed and replied. "They are all waiting in the main reception hall."
The Viscount nodded, stood up, and walked out.
To eliminate the wraith, his current forces were clearly insufficient. He needed to recruit some mercenaries or wandering knights from outside.
Every additional Knight would be a valuable asset against such a formidable and terrifying wraith.
If only he could find a true wizard.
Not those charlatans who merely bear the title of wizard but are nothing more than frauds, but genuine wizards.
They were the true experts when it came to dealing with wraiths.
Unfortunately, wizards were always elusive, and the Viscount had no idea where to find one.
"I've heard that the second son of the former Flash Baron became a wizard. I wonder if it's true or just a rumor?"
As he pondered, the Viscount arrived at the reception hall.
He scanned the room, and there were about twenty people sitting there, almost all of them armored, middle-aged men in their thirties and forties.
Knights of non-noble birth, due to the inferior quality of their breathing techniques and the scarcity of resources, typically only reached the rank of Knight in their thirties or forties.
Moreover, for most, the rank of Knight was the end of the line. Without a stroke of luck, they would never advance to Grand Knight.
So, the best he could hope for among those sitting in the hall was a peak Knight; a Grand Knight was out of the question.
One person, however, caught his eye with his distinctive appearance.
This man wore a thin gray robe and a night owl mask, standing out starkly among the armored knights.
But since everyone in the room had passed the initial assessment and was confirmed to possess Knight-level strength, the Viscount didn't comment further. He walked to the head of the table and sat down, then waved to the scribe.
The scribe immediately stepped forward, scanning the room. "First, thank you all for attending the recruitment. We have already outlined the details on the recruitment notice, but I must emphasize that the wraith in Cuvellio Manor is extremely powerful. Even a Knight can die if not careful. Despite this, do you still wish to participate?"
The crowd remained unperturbed.
The deaths of several knights at the Cuvellio Manor had already been the talk of Stone Bell City, and they were well aware of the situation. Clearly, they had all come prepared, knowing the risks involved.
“I have just one question,” a burly man rumbled. “Is the thousand gold coin reward real?”
The scribe glanced at the man and nodded. “Of course, it is. The thousand gold coins will be divided among you based on your performance. If any of you unfortunately perish in the manor, we will send the money to the family member or relative you designate.”
Hearing this, the knights in the room exchanged looks of relief and excitement.
Dividing a thousand gold coins among twenty-odd people meant that even the weakest among them could expect to receive twenty to thirty gold coins. That was almost equivalent to three to four years of their income!
At that moment, a voice suddenly cut through the air.
“If I were the only one participating, would the thousand gold coins be all mine?”
The room fell into an awkward silence as everyone turned to look at the speaker, who was none other than the man in the mask.
“Hey, that’s quite a bold statement.”
“Do you know what you’re saying?”
“Want to claim the thousand gold coins all for yourself? Well, let’s see if you have the chops for it.”
“It’s been a while since we’ve seen such a cocky guy.”
Malicious gazes converged on the masked figure. These days, who among the mercenaries and wandering knights was easy to provoke? Seeing someone even more audacious than themselves, many felt a surge of irritation.
“Kid, if you want to claim the reward all for yourself, you’ll have to get past me first.”
A burly, broad-shouldered man stepped forward, patting the massive iron axe on his back as he glared at the masked man.
“With your attitude, you must have some skills. How about we have a little contest? Whoever loses has to kneel and bark like a dog, then leave. What do you say?”
Several knights recognized the burly man as a well-known wandering knight, already at the rank of a High Knight. They looked at the masked man with a mix of amusement and anticipation.
“Great idea!”
“Ha, let’s see a fight!”
“Whoever backs down is a coward!”
“Kid, answer us. You’re not scared, are you?”
The knights began to cheer and jeer.
The Viscount of Silver Moon watched the scene with a cold, detached gaze, not bothering to intervene.
To be honest, he was curious about the masked man’s true strength.
Someone who would make such a bold claim in this setting was either a fool or extremely confident in their abilities. His instincts told him the masked man was not a fool.
Under the watchful eyes of the crowd, the masked man, or rather, Su Nan, simply nodded calmly.
“Not a bad idea. Let’s do it.”
Su Nan raised his head to meet the burly man’s gaze, his eyes shining with a peculiar light behind the mask.
“Now, you can kneel and bark like a dog.”
The burly man’s sneer vanished as his features turned slack.
In the stunned silence of the room, the burly man slowly knelt to the ground and opened his mouth.
“Woof!”
Thank you, sunzhongjie1, for your support!
