Chapter 46: This Is Truly Touching
Before leaving, Hermione got the password to the Headmaster's Office from Hagrid.
Hagrid specifically begged them not to tell Dumbledore about his Dragon Egg, and Harry readily agreed.
"Cockroach Cluster"
In front of the hideous stone guardian, Hermione loudly spoke the password to the Headmaster's Office, and the hidden passage slowly opened.
Upon returning to the Headmaster's Office, Ivan's heart was no longer as anxious as it was the first time. After all, he now knew how to use Occlumency, even if his level was not very high, it was still enough to get by. Besides, they were four people, and Dumbledore's attention couldn't possibly be focused on him alone.
"Is Professor Dumbledore not here?" The four of them stepped into the Headmaster's Office, where everything was neatly arranged, but there was no one inside. Harry sounded disappointed.
Ivan was also a bit puzzled. According to his estimation, Dumbledore should have just finished listening to Snape's report. Could it be that they immediately sought out Quirrell upon receiving the news?
After a brief moment of silent mourning for Quirrell, Ivan noticed that something was different about the Headmaster's Office from the last time he was there.
A massive mirror, reaching up to the ceiling, had been added. The frame was adorned with intricate golden patterns, and at the top, a line of text was carved. It was supported by two claw-shaped feet, making it look incredibly unique.
Placed so prominently, it was clear that Ivan wasn't the only one to notice it. Harry was already standing in front of the mirror, entranced, staring at it for a long time without moving.
"Harry, what are you looking at?" Ron walked over and patted Harry on the shoulder.
"Can't you see? There are two other people in the mirror besides me. I think they might be my parents." Harry couldn't help but step closer. In his eyes, the mother in the mirror extended her arm, and Harry mimicked the gesture, but ultimately, he only touched the smooth, cold surface of the mirror.
"Really? Why don't I see your parents?" Ron, curious, leaned in, hoping to see the faces of Harry's parents, but instead saw a different scene.
"I see myself as the head boy. That's pretty awesome!" Ron described the handsome version of himself in the mirror, wearing a Prefect Badge, and happily told Harry that perhaps the mirror could predict the future, and the person in the mirror must be his future self.
Hermione, seeing Harry and Ron so entranced by the mirror, was very concerned. She cautiously avoided looking directly at it and warned them.
"Before you learn more about this thing, you'd better stay away from that mirror. It might be a dangerous Magical artifacts!"
"Come on, it's in the Headmaster's Office!" Ron said dismissively, but when he saw Harry, who couldn't take his eyes off the mirror, he felt a bit uneasy.
"Mirror of Erised" Ivan said softly, looking at the mirror.
It seemed his previous guess was correct. Dumbledore, that old fox, didn't plan to place the mirror and the Philosopher's Stone where they belonged until he was sure Harry could pass the test of the Mirror of Erised.
"Mirror of Erised? Is that its name? Do you know it?" Harry, no longer lost in the memory of his parents, asked anxiously.
"I read about it in a book." Ivan nodded but didn't tell Harry that the book was called "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone."
"What does it do? Why can I see my parents in it?" Harry asked eagerly.
"Can it predict the future or something? I’m sure I’ll be a prefect someday, right?" Ron also looked at Ivan expectantly.
Harry didn’t believe Ron’s claim. After all, his parents were already dead. If this mirror could predict the future, would it mean they would all come back to life in the future?
"The Mirror of Erised’s function is to bring to the surface the deepest and most sincere desires of one’s heart. In other words, you will see what you most want", Ivan shook his head, rejecting Ron’s guess, and explained.
Harry and Ron were a bit disappointed. This meant that what they saw was fake, just a product of their own minds.
However, the two quickly perked up and urged Ivan and Hermione to go in front of the Mirror of Erised to see what their wishes were.
Ivan was a bit hesitant, but Hermione stepped forward first. After understanding how the Mirror of Erised worked, she also wanted to see what would appear in the mirror.
"Hermione, what do you see?" Ivan asked.
"It seems to be just an ordinary mirror?" Hermione looked at her reflection in the mirror, puzzled, as it seemed no different from when she looked in a mirror normally.
Just as Harry and the others were beginning to suspect that the mirror might be broken, they heard Hermione suddenly say,
"Wait, there seems to be a change."
Ivan looked over curiously and saw Hermione blushing slightly as she said happily,
"In the mirror, my front teeth are a bit shorter, which should make me look better."
"What kind of deepest desire is that?" Harry and Ron were momentarily speechless. They would have found it more acceptable if she had seen a few bags of snacks in the mirror.
Hermione didn’t see it that way, looking at her reflection in the mirror with satisfaction. After all, what she wanted now was this, and she wouldn’t trade it for the Philosopher’s Stone.
"Actually, I think you look great now", Ivan chuckled, not expecting Hermione’s deepest desire to be the correction of her front teeth, even though they looked cute being a bit longer.
"Really?" Hermione suddenly became happy, her already flushed face seeming to deepen in color.
Harry and Ron felt that the atmosphere was a bit off, as if they were the extra wheels in the room. They quickly urged,
"Ivan, you should go up and take a look."
"Yeah, we’re all curious about what you’ll see."
Ivan nodded, his interest piqued, and walked to the spot Harry had vacated, looking into the mirror.
Ivan had expected to see a future where he was punching Dumbledore and kicking Voldemort, but unfortunately, none of that happened.
In the mirror, there was a modest living room with an ordinary and simple family of three. Standing in the middle was a boy not yet twenty, who looked nothing like Ivan. The boy had a ruddy complexion and was lively, holding a shiny university acceptance letter. His parents were gathered around him, saying something happily, though Ivan couldn’t hear their voices. However, it was clear they were very happy.
"Ivan, what did you see in the mirror?" Harry noticed that Ivan’s eyes seemed a bit moist and gently patted him.
Ivan snapped back to reality, wiped his eyes, and said with a light tone,
"Just now, I saw myself, after a long and arduous effort, finally becoming the Minister of Magic after graduation. It was truly touching."
