Chapter 46: Gaining a Reputation
Chapter 46: Gaining a Reputation
Riding his flying broom over Queens, Jerry felt a satisfied smile spread across his face as he touched the two hundred dollar bills in his pocket.
Earning Little Red Stars while also making some extra cash was such a delightful thing.
While he wouldn't use magic to steal or rob, he found it acceptable to receive payment for his services as long as it was fair.
And each time, he didn't take much—sometimes just a few dollars. If the person he saved was poor, he would even take the money from the criminals.
In this world, money wasn't everything, but without it, life was almost impossible.
In his past life, he always found it hard to believe that Spider-Man, despite being so powerful, was still so poor. It seemed almost unbelievable.
And the part-time job he did, swinging around on webs to deliver food, seemed even more absurd.
With your strength, going to underground fight clubs to box illegally might be against your principles, but working at a construction site lifting bricks should be fine, right? After all, it pays better than delivering food!
But to be honest, he still admired people like Spider-Man. They genuinely did good deeds without expecting anything in return, helping and protecting others out of the goodness of their hearts, even at the cost of their time, love, life, and even their own lives.
Jerry knew he couldn't do that.
While he did good deeds every day, it was ultimately to make himself stronger and protect himself and the family he cared about.
"Ah, help!"
Hearing a cry for help from the alley below, Jerry put away the dollar bills and turned his flying broom towards the source of the cry.
"Petrify!"
"Dollar bills, come to me!"
In less than a minute, Jerry took off again.
Learning the Full Body Bind made ordinary robbers seem as fragile as infants in his eyes, greatly improving his efficiency in solving problems.
And he no longer had to worry about being chased by patrolling police after the fact, which was a rather embarrassing situation.
It was three in the morning.
Jerry returned to the warehouse, changed out of his wizard robe, and took his flying broom and other belongings back to his apartment.
Actually, with his flying broom, he could easily leave and return through his bedroom window.
But this wasn't a safe option.
If someone could use satellite surveillance to search the nearby neighborhoods, his identity could easily be exposed.
Flying to and from the abandoned factory, while not foolproof, at least added an extra layer of security.
The only downside was the trouble of carrying his flying broom and clothes in and out of the neighborhood.
Once he learned the Disguise Charm, Apparition, or the Invisibility Growth Spell, this problem would be much easier to solve.
Meanwhile, at the Queens Police Department,
in the chief's office, Chief Hass looked at the statements in his hand with a puzzled expression and glanced at his subordinate officer.
"Are you sure this isn't a joke?"
The officer shrugged helplessly.
"I thought they were joking too, but the statements from the three victims and the two robbers are identical. They all say a little wizard on a broomstick used magic to save them!"
"Wizard? Magic? At our age, you still believe in that nonsense? I thought only my daughter would believe such things!"
Hass shook his head and threw the statements on the table.
He suspected that there was some secret between the family and the robbers, and they were using this absurd story to cover it up.
The officer seemed to have a sudden realization and reminded Hass:
"Captain, do you think it might be related to that kid who likes to wear a wizard robe and acts heroically?"
"Him? Now that you mention it, it does sound similar. They’re both kids who like to dress up as wizards and prefer to act at night. However, we haven’t heard anything about him having a flying broom before!"
At that moment, Hass suddenly realized that for the past month, there had been a kid who liked to wear a wizard robe and come out at night to apprehend criminals.
And he was quite skilled; there was one time Hass chased him for half a day but couldn’t catch up.
"Maybe the broom is just a flying device that looks like a broom. And those so-called spells are actually high-tech weapons, like Iron Man’s!"
The officer stroked his chin, looking as if he had uncovered the truth.
Hass nodded in agreement:
"Let it be. After all, he’s helping us reduce our workload, which is a good thing. It’s just that kids these days are so capable, aren’t they?"
As he said this, he thought of his own son, Jerry, who was also an extraordinary child. His academic performance and household skills made Hass, as a father, feel rather ashamed.
"But Captain, Chief George did instruct us to apprehend this kid called 'Wizard.' His actions, though good, are still illegal!"
The officer reminded him again.
"I think the higher-ups are just worried that this will make the police department look incompetent.
However, it is indeed dangerous for a kid to go out every night doing such things. Go check the surveillance cameras and see if you can find where this kid lives. We’ll pay him a visit when we know!"
"Yes, Captain!"
Time flew by, and a week soon passed.
During this week, Jerry would ride his broom around Queens every night. Whenever he spotted a crime, he would immediately appear, wand in hand, casting spells with a swift motion.
Because of this, his Little Red Stars grew at a rate several times faster than before.
Moreover, his reputation as "Wizard" was no longer confined to the neighborhood. It began to spread throughout Queens.
So not only were the police looking for him, but some enterprising journalists, desperate for a scoop, also started using various methods to track him down.
However, Jerry always acted quickly and never lingered after solving an issue. He would simply fly away on his broom.
The resourceful journalists and patrolling police could only piece together the events from the victims and robbers.
For the citizens of Queens, they only heard rumors about a kid who liked to wear a wizard robe and would ride a broom after midnight.
The specifics were unknown, and many citizens were still skeptical without seeing it with their own eyes.
One afternoon, while his sister Elsa was napping in her room, Jerry quietly practiced the Shadowblade Curse in the living room.
In the week since his return, with a significant influx of Little Red Stars, he had been generous in spending them to learn and master the high-level spells from the Half-Blood Prince’s Notes.
His efforts paid off, and he could now cast those spells correctly, though with some difficulty.
Next, he needed to practice more to increase his proficiency with these spells, so he could use them more effectively.
