Chapter 459: Salmon Skewers and Patronus
Chapter 459: Salmon Skewers and Patronus
"Is Fudge doing well?" Felix asked.
"The Minister is fine", Delius replied stiffly. He closed the empty suitcase, stood up, and prepared to leave, never having taken a seat throughout the visit.
"Wait, Delius", Felix called out. Several parchments flew over to him, and Delius took them with a puzzled look.
"I haven't been idle these past few days. I've prepared some materials that will likely be useful during the Halloween Holiday Training. Please pass them on to Scrimgeour."
"These are... Ancient Runes?"
"Exactly. You can procure a batch of Rune Cards from the Future World Company for the Aurors and Hitwizards to practice with before the training. It will save a lot of time."
"I understand. I'll pass them on to Director Scrimgeour", Delius promised.
The next day, it was the weekend.
Felix woke up late, having stayed up all night the previous evening, but his efforts had paid off. In his office, he held a small, fiery red bird in his hand.
"Hmm, you can't be called a warning bird. I'll call you Echobird."
Due to the limited time, he had only used his Magical Vision and Accelerated Thinking to get a rough idea last night. However, with all of Nicolas Flamel's knowledge, he quickly recalled a similar alchemical item and spent half the night successfully replicating a substitute.
This alchemical item served as an extra eye. When used, it could receive a command and remain stable until the command was completed or it was destroyed. Then, it would either fly back to its owner or self-destruct on the spot.
Felix looked down at the fiery red bird, which hopped around in his palm.
"Keep an eye on the room and alert me if anyone tries to break in."
The fiery red bird chirped twice and jumped onto the ceiling, perching on the magical light. It was nearly invisible unless you looked closely.
Felix checked the time and realized the dining hall's meal hours had long passed. He knew the way and led Valen down to the castle's underground structures, encountering a few other students on their way to the kitchen for a snack.
Felix exchanged tips with them, recommending lemon salmon slices. "Remove the scales and bones from the salmon, slice it, season with black pepper, and pan-fry it. Finally, drizzle some lemon juice over it... it's quite delicious."
The two Ravenclaw students with him kept swallowing their saliva.
"Professor Hep, did you invent the Fishbone Extraction Charm?" one of them asked.
"No", Felix replied immediately. "But I happen to know this spell."
The two students exchanged glances. "Really... we have a problem with this spell. We always have trouble with it, and some fish bones are left behind. What could be the reason?"
"Is it a problem with the spell's transmission?"
"Probably not. Chang uses it well... she's my roommate and can cook fish herself!"
"I see", Felix thought for a moment. "It might have to do with Magic Control. I suggest you stabilize your magic within a certain range, similar to the process of Transfiguration. Of course, don't overdo it, or you'll end up completely shredding the fish..."
As they discussed magic, they walked into the basement. Felix thought he saw a red-haired figure disappear around the corner ahead. Weasley? He considered it for a moment but didn't pay much attention.
Valen stood on Felix's shoulder, its small black eyes also fixed on the end of the corridor. It smelled something familiar.
In the kitchen, the house-elf Dobby greeted them warmly.
Felix handed over a box of candies. After several polite refusals, Dobby and the enthusiastic house-elves retrieved a small jar from a corner, containing fresh salmon.
“This is specially for Mr. Heap!” Winky said, struggling to carry the small jar.
“Thank you, make some for them as well.” Felix pointed to the two Ravenclaw students, who were already staring in amazement.
Ten minutes later, Felix and Valen, each holding a salmon skewer, emerged from the kitchen, walking confidently down the empty dungeon corridor, savoring their meal. The aroma wafted irresistibly around them, and the Wizards in the framed portraits on the walls stared at them curiously.
“Why don’t we check out Wagadu’s camp? Their talismans and curses are quite interesting…”
At that moment, they heard Snape’s voice from around the corner.
“Fifty points from each of you and a detention,” the calm voice said. “Potter, Weasley, can you surprise me any more? Ordinary rule violations don’t seem to satisfy you anymore; causing a ruckus in the Slytherin common room… Potter, tell me, are you trying to show off your exceptional bravery?”
“We didn’t cause a ruckus in the Slytherin common room!” Harry said angrily.
“No backtalk, Potter, ten points from Gryffindor,” Snape said lazily. “More than thirty pairs of eyes witnessed you using a Patronus—” He suddenly stopped, his nose twitching. Harry, Ron, and Draco looked as if they had seen a ghost, their mouths open wide as they stared behind Snape.
Snape turned sharply, and Felix and Valen stood a short distance away, both holding salmon skewers, frozen in place.
“Hmm, Severus, and the three of you, what’s going on?” Felix asked lightly, the two salmon skewers in his hand disappearing as if by magic.
Valen’s small hands were full, but it lacked Felix’s ability. This wasn’t something that could be stuffed into a pocket, so it quickly turned around and hid behind Felix, stuffing the salmon skewer into its mouth, leaving a noticeable grease stain on its pink beak…
Snape was momentarily speechless, his deep eyes sizing up the two of them.
“Potter—” he drawled after a moment, “using a Patronus to break into the Slytherin common room and attempt to cause panic—”
“It wasn’t panic!” Harry exclaimed. “We just wanted to warn Malfoy to come out! We couldn’t just barge in, and we didn’t know the password—”
“It’s true,” Ron swallowed, the smell of the grilled salmon was too irresistible. “We wanted to discuss roasting fish…” He suddenly started coughing violently. “I mean, discussing the essay, the combination of ‘Light’ Runic Script and the Fire Spell.”
Felix had a pretty good idea of what was happening.
“Hand them over to me, Severus,” he said. “I happen to need to speak with them.”
Snape gave him a sidelong glance. “The detention can’t be skipped.” He then turned and left.
Felix shrugged. “Let’s go.” He said to Harry, Ron, and Draco. The trip to Wagadu’s camp was off.
They made their way upstairs, Harry and the others trailing behind. Harry could faintly smell the aroma of fish coming from behind Professor Hep, and his stomach began to growl.
“Harry, you used a Patronus?”
“Yes, Professor,” Harry said softly.
“Just a Patronus?”
“Harry can use a Patronus to send messages,” Ron said.
Felix stopped, looking at Harry with a mix of surprise and curiosity. Harry stammered, “You told me about the principle of using a Patronus to send messages, Professor. I tried it last night, and it was pretty simple…”
