Chapter 459: Peter is Just a Child, How Can You Treat Him Like This!
Chapter 459: Peter is Just a Child, How Can You Treat Him Like This!
"Silence!" Seeing the conversation veer off topic, the Chief Warlock rapped his gavel again, warning Ivan and Mrs. Pettigrew to refrain from discussing anything unrelated to the trial.
However, many of the council members ignored him, continuing their private discussions despite the Chief Warlock's repeated gavel strikes.
The Chief Warlock had little recourse; he couldn't have the Aurors remove all the council members, as that would halt the trial.
"Mrs. Pettigrew, do you have any more questions? If not, I will call the next witness to testify!" The Chief Warlock raised his voice to be heard over the din.
"Yes! Of course I do!" Though she found Ivan difficult to deal with, Mrs. Pettigrew was not about to back down. She spoke with determination.
"At the time, everyone knew it was Sirius Black who betrayed the Harry Potters, not my son, Peter Pettigrew!"
"Mrs. Pettigrew! I must interrupt you. I have already explained that Sirius Black and Peter Pettigrew secretly swapped the roles of Secret-Keeper!" Dumbledore interjected, speaking in a grave tone.
"Who can prove that?" Mrs. Pettigrew pressed, unwilling to let it go.
"You say that only James Potter, Sirius Black, and my son, Peter Pettigrew, knew about the swap. The problem is, Mr. Potter is dead, and my son has lost his memory. Now, you can say whatever you want, and it's not fair!"
"This isn't about fairness, Mrs. Pettigrew! The law requires evidence! We found the Dark Mark on Peter Pettigrew, but not on Sirius Black. Isn't that enough to prove the point?" Dumbledore replied calmly.
As Dumbledore spoke, an Auror stepped forward to roll up Peter Pettigrew's sleeve, revealing the Dark Mark to everyone present.
Most of the council members had seen reports about the Dark Mark, but seeing it in person still made them uneasy.
Ivan let out a silent sigh of relief. He thought the trial was almost over because the Dark Mark was the strongest piece of evidence, sufficient to convict Peter Pettigrew!
However, to his surprise, Mrs. Pettigrew did not give up. Even in the face of such evidence, she remained unperturbed and shouted loudly.
"Enough! A true spy wouldn't have the Dark Mark on their body!
And my son has lost his memory. He doesn't know anything. Who knows how that Dark Mark got there! Maybe someone forged it and erased his memory!"
"I heard that it wasn't the Aurors who first captured my son, but you!" Mrs. Pettigrew glared at them with hatred, her meaning clear.
"Please stop being unreasonable, Mrs. Pettigrew!" Dumbledore said, exasperated. He paused, then continued.
"After an investigation by the Ministry of Magic, it was found that the person who erased Peter Pettigrew's memory was a Death Eater on the run. If I had wanted to tamper with him, I could have done so before handing him over to the Ministry of Magic!"
"Also, you are mistaken about one thing. No one can forge the Dark Mark! It is a unique magic of Voldemort, filled with his power, and easily recognizable. Moreover, I doubt anyone would dare to do such a thing, given that he is still around!"
Dumbledore's casual words plunged the entire room into silence.
The wizards present, including the Chief Warlock on the stage, felt a chill run down their spines as Dumbledore spoke about Voldemort still existing in the magical world.
There had always been rumors in the magical world that the Dark Lord had not died on that night but had merely lost his power. Many speculated that the Dark Lord was hiding, plotting his return.
However, the Ministry of Magic had consistently denied these rumors, insisting that the Dark Lord had been completely defeated and all the Death Eaters had been imprisoned in Azkaban, and he would never return!
"Sir Dumbledore, please do not make such jokes in the courtroom!" The Chief Warlock's face turned grim, and he forced a smile, dryly speaking.
"We all know this is not a joke. I am merely stating some facts!" Dumbledore replied calmly.
Ivan silently observed the fear on everyone's faces and found it somewhat amusing.
These people were so afraid of a powerless Voldemort, yet they dared to loudly rebuke Dumbledore's words.
But it made sense. Normal people might argue with a police officer, but if they encountered an armed thug, they would scatter in fear.
The former followed the rules and wouldn't easily harm them, while the latter had no qualms about killing anyone in their way.
Similarly fearless was Mrs. Pettigrew. She was very old and had only one child, Peter, who had been lost and now found. She would not give up as long as there was the slightest hope.
Even if Voldemort were to resurrect right in front of her, it would not sway her will.
So she loudly proclaimed that Peter Pettigrew might have been controlled by the Imperius Curse by the Dark Lord, forced to become a Death Eater, or perhaps he had joined the Death Eaters as a spy to gather information.
"I know him better than anyone. He is so timid, so kind, he could never be a traitor. He has forgotten everything, and you still won't let him go. Please, he's just a child!" Mrs. Pettigrew sobbed, clutching Peter on the chair.
Despite Mrs. Pettigrew's crying and shouting, Dumbledore remained unmoved and countered.
"Do not divert the topic, Mrs. Pettigrew! Even if he has lost his memory, it does not absolve him of his crimes.
If you believe your son is innocent, please provide evidence to prove that Peter infiltrated the Death Eaters to gather information. Otherwise, he is a thorough Death Eater!"
Dumbledore's words thoroughly enraged Mrs. Pettigrew. Her expression turned terrifying, and she glared at Dumbledore with hatred.
"I have spoken to some Aurors. They told me that professional wizards have determined that my son was subjected to multiple Memory Charms in a short period."
"Perhaps my son knew something, and you forcibly altered his mind, handed him over to the Aurors, and then, thinking it wasn't enough, you infiltrated the Astronomy Tower to completely erase his memory!"
At this, Mrs. Pettigrew suddenly turned to the Chief Warlock on the stage, her teeth clenched as she said.
"Chief Warlock, I demand that their Wands be examined! Use Priori Incantatem!"
