Chapter 459: Jealousy Drives People Mad
Chapter 459: Jealousy Drives People Mad
Mo Libin was now overseeing the business in Europe and America and helping Lu Jiaxin buy stocks and trade index futures, so he was often flying overseas. Lu Jiaxin was short-staffed, so she hired two more people through an international headhunting company. One was Sang Wen, who had worked at Hongcheng Securities, and the other was Deng Weihai, also from Hongcheng, who had been a senior employee at the Xiao Rizi Bank.
Sang Wen stayed in Hongcheng to help Lu Jiaxin with her business there, while Deng Weihai was in charge of operations in the island country. Although she was currently only buying index futures contracts and stocks in the island country, she planned to invest in Xiao Rizi's electronics and real estate after the stock market crash. Despite her disdain for the country, she acknowledged their advancement in electronic technology, and investments in this area were very profitable. As for real estate, she recalled that there had been a collapse in the mid-90s, and she intended to withdraw her investments then.
Nie Zhan was aware that she had hired two more senior employees, and although he was somewhat surprised, he didn't inquire further. He didn't interfere much with business matters unless he felt something was amiss.
One day, as Lu Jiaxin was reading, she received a call from the private detective, who said he had some information for her. "Miss Lu, would you like me to send the information to you, or shall I have someone pick it up?"
Lu Jiaxin was delighted that her investment had paid off. "I'll send someone to collect it," she replied.
Lu Jiaxin called Yan Yijun and asked him to go and retrieve the information from the private detective. Yan Yijun had arrived in Hongcheng that afternoon and had gone to visit Gu Wenfeng in the hospital. The next day, after learning that Lu Jiaxin didn't plan on going out, he took the car out for a drive to familiarize himself with the city, only returning in the evening.
At dinner that night, Lu Jiaxin asked him about his outings. It was then that she learned that he had been following Gu Wenfeng's suggestion to get to know Hongcheng better.
Yan Yijun also showed Lu Jiaxin the map he had been working on. "Boss, this map is not yet complete. I'll let you know once I've driven through all the roads," he said.
Lu Jiaxin told him to take his time and not to rush, reminding him to be careful when driving.
After Yan Yijun returned with the information from the private detective, Lu Jiaxin was busy in the garden, so he didn't disturb her. Having already inquired and learned that the news was not good, he waited until Lu Jiaxin returned to the living room with a bouquet of flowers before presenting the information to her.
Lu Jiaxin had been anxiously awaiting this news, as she knew that until she found the mastermind behind the kidnapping, she wouldn't be able to rest easy. She immediately opened the package and read through the contents, her face turning ashen as she did so.
Yan Yijun and Li Qing were still unaware of the situation, but Miao Na knew that there had been a development in the kidnapping case. She found it strange that the police and Mr. Nie's investigations had turned up nothing, yet the private detective hired by Lu Jiaxin had managed to find a lead.
"You two, come with me to the study," Lu Jiaxin said to Yan Yijun and Li Qing.
Miao Na watched as they ascended the stairs, puzzled as to why they were excluding her. After all, she had been with the boss for over a year, while Yan Yijun and Li Qing had only been there for a little over a week.
The study was soundproofed, so no one outside could hear what was being discussed inside.
"The information from the private detective indicates that Kang Huijuan believes I'm the reason she's no longer welcome in the Nie family, and she has vowed to make my life difficult," Lu Jiaxin explained.
Yan Yijun's mind raced as he tried to place the name Kang Huijuan.
Li Qing, with his good memory and quick wit, asked, "Is she the second young mistress of the Nie family?"
Lu Jiaxin nodded. "Yes, she's the wife of Nie Jingshu, the second young master of the Nie family. The elders of the Nie family want Nie Jingshu to divorce her, but for some unknown reason, he hasn't done so yet."
Li Qing furrowed his brow in confusion. "Boss, you said it was the elders of the Nie family who wanted Nie Jingshu to divorce her. How does that involve you?"
In the short time he had been there, he had observed that Lu Jiaxin wasn't the type to meddle in other people's business, and he couldn't imagine her involving herself in the affairs of distant cousins-in-law.
Lu Jiaxin's expression turned gloomy as she said, "I've never met Nie Liye or Nie Manli, and I have no connection to Kang Huijuan whatsoever. As for why she hates me, I suspect that someone in the Nie family may have said something they shouldn't have. She probably can't bring herself to blame the Nie family, so she's directing her anger at me instead."
Yan Yijun found this difficult to comprehend. "Maybe this woman is just making some empty threats," he suggested.
Lu Jiaxin continued, "Kang Huijuan has a close friend from childhood named Qiangge, who is the leader of a branch of the 14K triad. The private detective found out that one of Qiangge's confidants met with the limping Sen before the kidnapping incident."
The limping Sen was the man who had delivered the ransom money to the deceased Eagle.
As Eagle had dealings with all sorts of shady characters, and the person who instructed him did so secretly, it had been difficult to find any useful leads through him. However, the private detective had suspected Qiangge and decided to investigate those close to him, which had ultimately led to this breakthrough.
"I had the private detective look into the Nie family as a precaution, and I never expected to actually find a lead," Lu Jiaxin said. "But for now, it's just a suspicion. We still need to find concrete evidence."
Yan Yijun and Li Qing were already familiar with the information the police had on the kidnapping case. They had even analyzed the case themselves, but the limited information they had, coupled with their lack of knowledge about Hongcheng, had prevented them from drawing any useful conclusions.
Li Qing thought for a moment before speaking. "That limping Sen has disappeared without a trace. Even if we give this lead to the police, they won't be able to do anything. The other party will simply deny it, and there won't be any evidence to hold them accountable."
Lu Jiaxin had no intention of involving the police, and she looked at the two men expectantly. "If we don't go to the police, what do you suggest?"
Yan Yijun frowned. "Going to the police is not an option, and continuing the investigation through the private detective could not only fail to find evidence but also alert the culprits.
Lu Jiaxin's expression remained cold. "I'll have someone question Qiangge's confidant. He should cooperate."
Yan Yijun was confused. How could they possibly get him to talk? But then he realized what Lu Jiaxin meant by "have someone."
Li Qing understood as well and said, "Boss, we must find someone trustworthy for this task."
Lu Jiaxin turned to Yan Yijun, as if asking for his opinion.
Yan Yijun felt that this approach was somewhat risky. "If the person you send is not careful enough and exposes you, it could put you in danger," he cautioned.
Seeing that neither of them objected to her using more forceful methods, Lu Jiaxin was satisfied. "These triads are a cancer to society, and they deserve whatever they get."
If they had disagreed with her methods, she wouldn't have continued to employ them. She wasn't a violent or bloodthirsty person, but when faced with people who wanted to harm her, she knew it would be foolish to stick to her previous ways. Besides, if Kang Huijuan thought she was easy to bully, who knew if she would try something like this again?
This was a preemptive strike. But neither of them voiced any opposition, and although she would have handed the matter over to the government if they had been in the mainland, they were in Hongcheng now. The laws here were different, and even if they found solid evidence that Qiangge had been involved in the kidnapping, he wouldn't be sentenced to death. The most he would get would be a couple of decades in prison.
