Chapter 459: It's Just a Trick to Fool Lucy
Chapter 459: It's Just a Trick to Fool Lucy
When he gets serious, his efficiency is quite impressive.
The pile of documents handed over by the President was intimidating at first glance, but in reality, it wasn't as overwhelming as it seemed.
They were mostly unorganized task records, some even as simple as a commission form that the President had glanced at and sent away without bothering to register until the task was completed.
The slightly more important ones involved money, like food and beverage purchases that hadn't been recorded in the books and some compensation documents or vouchers where the guild had paid for rewards or reparations.
There were also the commissions that had just arrived this morning, which hadn't been recorded or posted yet.
Rod was now adept at handling these matters, and everything was going smoothly.
By midday, he had already resolved most of the tasks.
During this time, the guild was relatively quiet as many members had gone home to rest after the previous night's festivities, especially the most energetic bunch, whose injuries were still healing.
Rod and Mira simultaneously put down their pens, stretched lazily, and then laughed together, looking at each other.
A magical coincidence.
Flap, flap, flap...
A white pigeon flew into the open doorway, carrying a small package in its claws.
The package was slightly larger than the pigeon, but it seemed to carry it effortlessly.
The pigeon flew towards the counter, circling above Rod and Mira's heads while announcing, "President Makarov's mail! President Makarov's mail!"
It seemed to be a magical bird, just like the little Beep.
President Makarov leaned over the second-floor railing and waved, "Over here."
The pigeon flew up to the second floor and dropped the package into President Makarov's hands.
Mira had already prepared some sunflower seeds and peanut chunks, which she usually fed to Beep.
After offering some hospitality to the messenger pigeon, President Makarov finished opening the package, wrote a quick note, and sent the pigeon on its way.
Rod curiously asked who had sent the package.
President Makarov replied, "It's from the Western Phenox Guild Alliance."
"Hmm? Did they change their pigeon?" Rod remembered that the previous ones were always grayish-black.
"No, it's not from our affiliated alliance," President Makarov explained. "It's from the Western Phenox, the one Mermaid Heel belongs to."
"The last Six Demon Generals Extermination Action was initiated by multiple guild alliances within the Kingdom of Phenox, and the reward was also contributed by all non-participating guilds. However, since the coalition commander was Jura, the reward was held by them."
President Makarov, for once, descended the stairs normally and placed a thick stack of banknotes and a letter on the counter, "There's a share for you two, Wendy, and Sharuru as well. I'll leave the distribution to you."
Rod glanced at the thickness of the banknotes and estimated that it could be several million if they were all 100,000-Jote notes. He couldn't help but remark, "That's a lot of money to send by pigeon instead of through the bank. They're a bit too carefree, aren't they?"
"As long as it's delivered safely, isn't that what matters?" President Makarov set down the items and left the guild with his hands behind his back. He needed some fresh air after writing so many self-criticisms.
Mira took on the task of reading the letter, while Rod counted the money.
After a while, he confirmed that there were 540 banknotes and handed them to Mira to count while he read the letter.
"After compensating for a portion of the Celestial Horse's losses, the reward will be evenly divided among all members, including Happy and Sharuru, with 600,000 J each."
Rod silently calculated the number of people, 12 from the coalition, plus the four of them who were inadvertently involved, making a total of 9,600,000 J.
The Celestial Horse's Fairyvimpto seemed repairable, so only a partial repair cost was compensated, meaning the original amount was over 10,000,000 J.
This could definitely be considered a grand gesture.
According to the reward, this is not just an S-class mission but meets the standards of an SS-class mission.
The letter mentioned that they didn't initially consider the four additional members, and Mr. Jura's reward was also a level higher than the others.
However, Jura insisted that Rod's support was crucial, and Wendy's healing magic was essential, so they had to be included.
Thus, it became an equal distribution.
"Mr. Jura is such a good person," Rod sighed, deciding to pay him a visit when he had the time.
"Yeah, this way, we won't have to wait for Aragal's bounty," Mira said, carefully dividing the banknotes into nine portions, with sixty notes each, so she could distribute them to everyone when they arrived.
She then put two portions into her bag, took out a receipt, signed it herself, and then had Rod sign it.
"The Vice-President is embezzling the companions' rewards!" Rod exclaimed in a mock-serious tone, earning a roll of the eyes from Lachi.
In reality, the two of them had been sharing money for months, and it was challenging to tell whose money was whose. After receiving their wages or bonuses, they would immediately deposit them into the bank.
They would sometimes go together, or whoever was available would go and deposit into various accounts, creating a mess.
Anyway, they didn't have to worry about anyone running off with the money.
...
At noon, Lucy came to the guild for lunch and saw Rod posting a new task, so she watched from behind for a while.
"Mr. Rod, do you have any suitable missions for me?" Lucy asked.
Rod glanced at the band-aid on Lucy's forehead and said, "Why are you in a hurry to find a new mission? Your injuries haven't healed yet, have they?"
"Because it's almost the end of the month again..." Lucy pouted, "This month, we were busy with the Harvest Festival for over a week, and I didn't win the beauty contest prize. The whole situation with catching the wanted criminal was a mess, and in the end, I only earned a little money from being a waitress..."
Rod interrupted, "See? I introduced you to the waitress job, and now you're blaming me for the money you earned."
"That's not the point!" Lucy exclaimed in frustration, "Anyway, if we don't prepare in advance, next month's rent will be a disaster!"
"Oh... If that's the case, there is indeed a suitable mission for you, and you can choose whether to work alone or in a team."
"What?"
"A money-counting mission. Go find Mira and tell her I want you to help count the money, and all the money you count will be yours." Rod smiled, "How does this mission sound?"
Lucy glared at him suspiciously, "There's no such good deal; it must be a scam."
"Then let's make a bet. If you don't get the money, I'll treat you to lunch today and help you find a suitable mission. But if you do get the money... Mira loves the blueberry mousse from Hani Dessert House, so you can go and buy some for her."
Lucy hesitated for a moment, it sounded like a genuine offer... No, it was probably a calculated move to make her believe and not take the bet!
Lucy clenched her fist and said, "I accept the bet!"
Rod watched as she walked towards the counter to speak with Mira, who seemed startled at first but quickly broke into a smile and handed her a stack of money to count.
Lucy froze, was this for real?
Rod gave a thumbs-up to Mira, who covered her mouth and laughed.
