Chapter 458: Ivan: Selling Pity? Who's Afraid of Who?
Chapter 458: Ivan: Selling Pity? Who’s Afraid of Who?
Hearing Sirius's words, Ivan quickly shot him a glare. This was not the time to sulk.
Sirius pouted but didn't say anything more.
"You actually dare to insult my son!" Mrs. Pettigrew reacted strongly, waving her cane and attempting to strike Sirius's head.
But the cane was caught mid-air by a hand. Dumbledore stared intently at the Old Witch, a hint of anger on his face.
Mrs. Pettigrew's fiery anger was doused like it had been splashed with cold water. She trembled, trying to pull her cane back from Dumbledore's grip but lacked the courage to do so.
"Silence! Stop this at once! This is a Wizengamot, not a place for disturbances!" The Chief Warlock pounded the table in irritation.
Dumbledore released his hold, and the cane fell to the ground.
Mrs. Pettigrew crouched down shakily to pick up her cane, her body hunched, and looked up at the Chief Warlock with a choked voice.
"Your Honor, please forgive my rudeness. As a mother, I have been separated from my child for over ten years. Today, I finally have the chance to see him again, and I can't bear to be separated from him again."
As she spoke, Mrs. Pettigrew began to weep openly, tearfully recounting how she had been left destitute and alone after her only child was presumed dead, and how she had struggled to survive in the wizarding world.
Her head of white hair, aged face, and patched robes evoked a deep sense of sorrow and pity in those who heard her.
Ivan frowned. Mrs. Pettigrew's words were all irrelevant to the case, and the Chief Warlock made no move to interrupt her. This was a clear sign of bias.
Recalling what Dumbledore had told him earlier, Ivan realized that the Chief Warlock had been nominated by the Ministry of Magic. It was clear that, for some people, the truth was far less important than political maneuvering. To create trouble, Fudge was willing to do anything, and the Chief Warlock's reprimand was likely aimed at Dumbledore.
Noticing the other committee members, who were visibly moved and sympathetic after Mrs. Pettigrew's emotional outburst, Ivan knew he couldn't wait any longer!
The rules of a wizarding court were entirely different from those in the country where Ivan had lived in his previous life.
The votes of the committee members would significantly influence the final verdict, and the Chief Warlock would generally not go against their decision, especially since the Chief Warlock was not on Sirius's side.
Ivan wasn't sure how many of the committee members had been bought off or how many remained neutral, but he knew that if Mrs. Pettigrew continued, the situation would only worsen.
Realizing this, Ivan decisively interrupted the Old Witch's sobbing and said,
"Mrs. Pettigrew, what you're saying is not right! Your son, Peter Pettigrew, is a Death Eater! He shamefully revealed the hiding place of the Potter couple to the Dark Lord, betraying the friends who had entrusted their lives to him, nearly destroying the hope of the entire wizarding world!"
Ivan's passionate tone reminded the committee members, who had been somewhat sympathetic to the Old Witch, of Peter's heinous deeds.
But Ivan wasn't finished. He looked at each person present and continued in a sharp voice,
"Harry Potter saved the entire wizarding world, saved all of us, so we don't have to live under the brutal rule of the Dark Lord! Such a hero should have had a happy family, loving parents, and the recognition he deserves!"
But all of this was shattered by the despicable traitor, Peter, the lapdog of the Dark Lord! You must not know what kind of life our hero has led for over a decade!
He was raised by his Muggle relatives! That Muggle family detested wizards and despised everything they couldn't understand!
Poor Harry suffered unjust treatment from a young age because he was different! He was forced to live in a tiny storage room, do a lot of household chores, wear hand-me-downs, be bullied by his peers, and often go hungry.
Ivan spoke with deep sorrow, doing his best to portray Harry's life in the Muggle world, successfully making most of the committee members feel indignant about Harry's tragic circumstances.
"How dare those Muggles treat him like that? Being able to raise Harry Potter is a great honor! They actually dared to treat him this way!"
"Good heavens, I had no idea Harry endured so much as a child. I thought the Ministry of Magic would have arranged the best possible living conditions for him!"
"What has the Ministry of Magic been doing? Why haven't they cared about Harry Potter's well-being for so many years?"
On both sides of the chamber, the committee members were furious, their curses unending.
They had long forgotten about Peter Mrs. Pettigrew's personal grievances. Compared to Muggles discriminating against wizards and a hero suffering unjust treatment, these issues were far more compelling.
Moreover, every wizard sitting here was from the old generation. Each had experienced the last wizarding war, felt the terror of the Dark Lord and the Death Eater army, and harbored some gratitude towards Harry for ending the Dark Lord's reign.
Many of the witches, moved by the situation, looked at Peter with disdain, contempt, and anger. Only one relatively rational witch stood up and asked,
"Mr. Hals, can you guarantee that everything you said is true?"
"Yes, ma'am! Harry Potter is currently in the waiting room and will testify in court later. You can ask him yourself!" Ivan replied politely.
Ivan's words convinced even those committee members who had been skeptical, for no one would tell a lie that would be quickly exposed.
Peter Mrs. Pettigrew watched as Ivan used just a few words to destroy the atmosphere she had painstakingly created, reversing the situation in an instant. She realized she had met her match today!
While she respected Dumbledore, a fellow defense attorney, she did not fear him.
People like him had a sense of dignity and would not stoop to playing the victim, unlike her. More importantly, he naturally held a position of strength, which helped her portray herself as a helpless underdog to gain the committee's sympathy.
However, the young wizard in front of her had no such reservations. Peter Mrs. Pettigrew understood that her usual strategy might not work today.
Ivan watched Peter Mrs. Pettigrew, whose eyes were still red from crying, with a playful smile on his face.
So, you want to play the victim, huh? Bring it on! Who's afraid of who? I have plenty of stories to tell!
