Chapter 458: Big and Small Matters
Chapter 458: Big and Small Matters
"Partner? Isn't Rod going with Sister Mirajane?"
Rod sighed helplessly, "I can't partner with her because she'll also be an examiner."
Mirajane transformed a demon hand and said with a mischievous smile, "I won't go easy on you~"
"Eek!" Wendy took a step back in fear.
"Go, go, go. Don't scare off my partner," Rod pushed Mirajane's hand down and then grabbed her shoulder, turning her around and pushing her away.
Mirajane turned her head and silently mouthed, 'You'll pay for this later.'
Rod pretended not to notice.
Wendy worried about holding them back, "Is this a very important exam? I'm not good at fighting."
"The focus is on teamwork, and Wendy, aren't you good at support magic? There's no better partner in the entire guild than you."
"Then... I'll do my best!"
"Yes! I'm counting on you."
Shaluna anxiously advised, "Don't put too much pressure on Wendy."
Rod reassured her, "Don't worry. If she gets tired or unhappy along the way, it's fine to drop out halfway."
"Hey, Rod, let's arm wrestle!" Natsu shouted, "Watch me take revenge with my strength this time!"
Elfman cut in, "If it's arm wrestling, a real man like me will challenge you first!"
"Bring it on!"
On her first night in Fairy Tail, Wendy and Shaluna slept on the floor.
It was an old tradition in the guild; parties always meant all-nighters.
To prevent them from catching a cold, Rod placed Worm beside them at night, his fluffy white fur almost enveloping both of them.
The next morning, Wendy decided to move into the girls' dormitory.
She had heard that many girls in the guild lived there and thought it would be easier to get along with everyone.
Although the rent was a bit expensive, Wendy could afford it.
For seven years, she had barely needed money for food and clothing in the village, and occasionally doing small tasks left her with plenty of pocket money.
Robin and the other villagers were mostly self-sufficient and didn't earn much, but they also didn't have many extra expenses. Occasionally, with a little income, they spent some on drinking and the rest went to Wendy.
Not to mention that during the last demon extermination, Wendy and Shaluna each received 1 million J.
So Wendy was a hidden little rich girl, and unlike Lucy, she didn't have the worry of possibly not being able to afford rent every month.
Rod sent two river crabs to help Wendy move her luggage, and they only needed to deliver it to the door of the girls' dormitory. The rest was left in the care of Erza and Levy.
For some reason, Levy especially liked Wendy; perhaps there were no girls younger than her in the guild (in terms of age).
Returning to the guild meant there were many things to attend to, such as...
Bang! Makarov placed a stack of documents almost as tall as himself on the counter, "I've already handled the most urgent work. These can be sorted out within the month, so give it your all."
In other words, he had only dealt with the urgent tasks and left the rest untouched. Rod sighed, "Master, your work is truly exhausting."
Mirajane smiled mischievously, "Indeed, you've even finished the urgent work."
Makarov's face turned red, and he continued sadly, "You know the Council of Judges is functioning again, right? Those guys sent a thick stack of complaints, and each complaint letter means writing an apology letter..."
"You know how much trouble the Council caused during the month they were paralyzed?"
"Of course, we knew. Didn't we remind you to start writing them early?"
"Seeing the Guild Master like this, Rod couldn't help but recall his own procrastination on the eve of summer vacation, with his homework untouched."
Makarov's gaze drifted, and he whispered, "I thought the past was behind us, that we could escape it, but who knew they'd dig up old records."
"Um... Good luck with that."
Rod and Mirajane divided a large stack of documents in half, each taking their share.
Before they started work, they flipped through the newspapers from the past few days.
The most important news was probably the restoration of the Council of Judges.
The newspaper listed the new council members, and apart from Oug, Rod and Mirajane were unfamiliar with the rest, marking a complete turnover in the upper echelons.
After the review, some former council members chose to retire, while others returned to their hometowns to live ordinary lives.
Ultear remained missing, or rather, on the run.
There was no mistake in the content of the book, which was published in 1969!
Jellal had already been handed over to the Council of Judges by the K.Arum Kingdom. It was said that his charges were so severe that he faced life imprisonment at best and capital punishment at worst.
However, due to Jellal's special status, they needed to determine how much Council intelligence he had leaked, so a more detailed interrogation was required.
But as he remained unconscious, a skilled physician had to treat him before the interrogation could proceed, and so the matter remained unresolved for the time being.
The new Council of Judges took the infiltration of spies in the previous council seriously and made a solemn self-criticism, claiming that they would conduct stringent reviews in the future to prevent such incidents.
Further back in the newspapers, there was news about the Di fang Gonhui Lianmeng dispatching a coalition to invade the Six Devil Generals.
The Council of Judges didn't make a big deal out of this, instead, they generously acknowledged the urgency of the situation and allowed the media to praise the coalition's decisive action.
They also stated that if this incident provoked retaliation from the Balam Alliance, the new Council of Judges would help the legitimate guilds bear the pressure.
Compared to the complete annihilation of the Six Devil Generals, one of the three major forces, Rod and Mirajane's arrest of Aragal and the obliteration of the Black Unicorn seemed less noteworthy.
The Mountain Dracon and Inferno Wyvern didn't appear in the newspapers, perhaps because the Council of Judges kept their promise, or maybe there were other considerations.
Rod didn't pay much attention to this detail; after all, those who needed to know would eventually find out.
As they continued reading, Mirajane suddenly said, "What about the opposite bank of the canal?"
"Huh?"
"Strawberry Street, I heard from Chico that someone there is planning to sell their house."
"Strawberry Street...?" Just now, they were discussing important matters, and now they've suddenly jumped back to this, but it was indeed important. Rod thought for a moment, "Isn't that where Lucy lives now?"
"Yeah, it's only about 300 meters from Lucy's house." Mirajane said, "I think the location is pretty good, close to downtown, and it'd be convenient for us to get to work..."
As she spoke, a hint of blush appeared on Mirajane's face, and she realized she had been fantasizing more and more about married life lately.
She had imagined exciting scenarios, plain ones, romantic ones, and even arguments.
"Let's go check it out after work. If it's suitable, we should buy it early." Rod held Mirajane's hands and squeezed them gently.
Holding hands now didn't evoke the same excitement as when they first got together, but the thought of their approaching wedding still brought a unique feeling.
