Chapter 454: Recruitment
Chapter 454: Recruitment
Chen Chuan, through the Boundary Token, had discerned something. He acknowledged with a hum, "Mr. Su, I'll wait for your reply."
Soon, he heard the sound of the wind and a series of dull grunts from people being struck, mixed with roars and gunshots. But the commotion lasted only briefly before it subsided.
After some routine exchanges, about two minutes later, footsteps approached, and the noisy sounds gradually faded as the other side became quiet again.
A voice apologized, "Sorry for the wait, Sir. May we continue our discussion?"
Chen Chuan asked, "May I ask why you held back?"
Su Wei was taken aback, "What?"
Chen Chuan explained, "Of the seven people you just knocked down, five were aiming for your companion's vital spots. Yet, you merely subdued them without any excessive force."
Su Wei was surprised, "How did you..."
He realized that the other party had deduced the situation in the room through the sounds transmitted by the Boundary Token, not only discerning the number of people on the other side but also sensing the intensity of his attacks.
It seemed that this employer was not ordinary.
Su Wei spoke frankly, "The situation here is complex. We're all mercenaries, often fighting to the death without needing any reason.
I'm not clear about what happened just now. Perhaps it was someone I know who started the trouble, but I don't want to see him die in front of me. All I could do was stop both sides."
"Like this..."
Chen Chuan heard a hint of melancholy in his words, as if there was another story. He didn't ask further but nodded, "Mr. Su, what about my previous offer? I'm currently in Central City. If it's convenient for you, let's set a time to talk."
Su Wei thought for a moment, "I need to arrange things before I can come to you, which might take three to five days."
After he finished speaking, a contact signal was sent from the other side, "Mr. Su, after you arrive, you can use this to contact me. My surname is Chen."
Su Wei's spirits lifted, "Alright, Mr. Chen, I'll contact you when I reach Central City."
After ending the call, Chen Chuan contacted the base camp and discussed some matters before concluding the conversation. Over an hour later, Zou Handan arrived.
He waited until both parties reached an agreement before bidding farewell to Tan Zhi and leaving with Chao Ming.
One day later...
Su Wei emerged from the checkpoint at the station. The bright and vibrant Central City, compared to the gloomy and dim Convergence Zone, seemed more lively. He couldn't help but feel a momentary daze.
Traveling from Central City to the Convergence Zone was challenging, and the reverse was no simpler.
Those born and raised in the Convergence Zone were almost never allowed to enter Central City, unable to return to the normal world. Their worldview was also narrow.
Even as a Tier Three Combatant, he only knew vague things.
To enter Central City, one must first have a clean record, then sign a confidentiality agreement, not disclose Convergence Zone information to unrelated personnel, pay a security deposit, and wear a Boundary Token for surveillance. Any mention of related matters would lead to immediate arrest.
He had a pass, obtained to handle some clients' requests from Central City, but even so, he estimated the review would take several days. Unexpectedly, this time it was very quick, almost as if his application was approved as soon as it was submitted, and he didn't even need to pay the deposit.
He guessed that the employer must have pulled some strings, which made him reconsider the employer's influence.
Standing in the sunlight for a while, he suddenly felt uncomfortable. He moved to the shadow of a nearby building and used the Boundary Token to contact the employer, whose original avatar was a headshot.
After a brief wait, the other side answered.
"Mr. Chen, I've arrived."
"Good, please ask Mr. Su to come to this location, and we'll meet here."
Su Wei received an address and used the Boundary Token to search for it. A few minutes later, he boarded a tram and, upon reaching the station, followed the address to a beverage shop.
As soon as he entered, a voice called out, "Mr. Su, over here."
Su Wei looked over and saw a young man with an extraordinary aura and handsome appearance. He was slightly surprised, as he had already guessed from the voice that the other party was younger than him, but he didn't expect such youth.
Yet, despite his age, he was a Tier Three Combatant, and there was clearly an impressive power backing him, which made Su Wei's attitude more cautious.
Approaching Chen Chuan, he said, "Mr. Chen, I'm Su Wei."
Chen Chuan glanced at him. Tier Three Combatants often had their temperaments, but it was rare to see one as cautious as Su Wei, which might be related to his personal experiences.
Few Tier Three Combatants were as free-spirited as Su Wei. Aside from sharing his earnings with the children and siblings of fallen teammates, he refused many unscrupulous requests, and someone had been targeting him, so despite his strength, he struggled to rise.
Chen Chuan said, "Mr. Su, please take a seat."
Su Wei pulled out a chair and sat down. "Mr. Chen, I'd like to ask, what exactly do you want me to do?"
Chen Chuan explained, "It's like this. I'm currently recruiting team members to expand my team, so I'd like to invite Mr. Su to join my team."
Su Wei was taken aback, "A team? Aren't you from the command center?"
Chen Chuan introduced himself, "I'm from the command center, to be precise. I'm Captain Chen Chuan, currently recruiting suitable squad members."
"Captain Chen..."
Su Wei couldn't help but glance at him, suppressing his surprise. He extended his hand and shook Chen's, saying cautiously, "So, you're Captain Chen."
Su Wei had dealt with the command center personnel before, but this was the first time he had met such a young captain. However, he didn't doubt Chen Chuan's capabilities; rarely had he encountered someone who gave off such a palpable sense of oppression.
"Captain Chen," he said earnestly, "Since you're inviting me, I need to make a few things clear. As I mentioned earlier, I've been targeted for a long time. So, if you're hiring me, it's best to be prepared for this."
Chen Chuan looked at him and replied, "I've also mentioned that your situation isn't an issue for me, Mr. Su."
If the people targeting Su Wei had some powerful backing, he wouldn't have survived this long. Even with connections, the city's forces wouldn't interfere with the garrison.
Chen Chuan proposed, "Mr. Su, if you're willing, I can arrange for you to join the garrison with a temporary position in my squad. This way, you'll have fewer worries."
Su Wei hesitated for a moment and then shook his head, "Never mind."
He didn't want to be tied down by joining the military, even if it was just temporary. He had no connections or backing, and he didn't know what kind of trouble he might get into.
More importantly, he didn't know much about Chen Chuan and didn't want to be associated with him right from the start.
"It's up to you," Chen Chuan said. It didn't matter if he didn't join; according to the employment relationship, the other party was only responsible for the employer, so there wouldn't be any hindrance.
"Then I'm done," Su Wei said. "Do you have any requirements, Captain Chen?"
"I only have one requirement," Chen Chuan said, "Follow orders. Rest assured, I understand your concerns, and I won't ask you to do anything against your principles."
Su Wei seemed to relax a bit and looked up, "Then I have no issues."
Chen Chuan nodded, tapped on his Boundary Token, and sent a recruitment form. It listed various requirements and the previously agreed-upon conditions.
Su Wei read it several times, confirmed it was okay, signed his name, and sent it back. Soon after, both of them received a notification from the platform confirming their employment relationship.
Chen Chuan smiled slightly and said, "Welcome aboard, Su."
Su Wei also smiled, "Captain Chen, what do you need me to do now?"
"There's no task at the moment," Chen Chuan explained, "The operation will start after the new year, but the exact time is unclear. This is a long-term employment. Your salary and benefits will be provided as agreed, and during this time, you only need to stay on standby."
"I won't be doing anything?" Su Wei was about to say something but stopped. The thought of taking the money without working made him feel uneasy.
At that moment, Chen Chuan received a communication alert on his Boundary Token. He took a look and stood up, saying, "Su, I have to go. I've sent you some data. I hope you can provide some suitable suggestions based on your experience. Please maintain good condition and keep in touch during this time."
Su Wei stood up straight and replied solemnly, "Yes, sir."
Chen Chuan smiled, "I've already settled the bill. The hot drinks here are excellent; I recommend you try them." With that, he left.
Once outside, he headed towards Wu Yi Academy and made a call, "Sister Ni, is there anything going on at the bureau?"
Ni Qianxi's voice came through the Boundary Token, "It's not a mission. I wanted to tell you something. Recently, we've been investigating the Ferris Wheel Corporation's attack on Processing Bureau staff and the Fusion Boundary Corporation. Although we found some clues, the Ferris Wheel dispatched its own legal team, and there's no conclusion yet."
"Do they have any further actions planned?" Chen Chuan asked.
"Actually, I wanted to tell you about this," Ni Qianxi said. "We found out that someone from Yangzhi City investigated you recently. It's likely the Ferris Wheel Corporation. If you're going back to Yangzhi, be cautious, especially after leaving Central City. We won't be able to provide much support."
Chen Chuan pondered. After the attack, based on interrogations and deductions, it seemed the attackers were specifically targeting him, while the Fusion Boundary Corporation was just a side target.
This was a bit strange. Perhaps they believed that only by eliminating him could they target Meng Shu? But even if Meng Shu was eliminated, the Meng family still had other members. As long as Meng Lai, who held the company's power, was still alive, it wouldn't be difficult to push another heir.
In fact, after Meng Huang was eliminated, there would be no more business dealings with the Ferris Wheel Corporation or the Oceanic Nations.
If he set aside these factors, perhaps the key was here.
Although he didn't know the specific reasons, he didn't need to figure it out. "Thank you for the reminder, Sister Ni. I'll be careful."
