Chapter 454: Harry: To Be Honest, Have You Been Sneaking in Extra Study Sessions Behind My Back? (Third Update)
"These legal books are so complicated. How could I possibly memorize them after just a short while?" Harry pouted, feeling a bit dizzy from all the clauses and regulations.
"But you’ve been reading for a whole hour! It would take me less than half an hour to memorize all this! Ivan only needed fifteen minutes!" Hermione’s voice grew increasingly shrill. She felt that Harry wasn’t really studying and was just wasting time.
"Haven’t you read the newspaper? Sirius’s trial is tomorrow! You only have this one night!" Hermione reminded him.
Under Hermione’s scolding, Harry could only cover his face with the book, trembling. He certainly understood the limited time he had.
However, there were at least twenty laws related to Peter Pettigrew, along with various additional clauses, making them extremely complex. He spent an hour just trying to understand the general meaning of each clause.
"How could anyone memorize all these clauses in just fifteen minutes?" Harry muttered softly.
Seeing that Harry didn’t believe her, Hermione couldn’t help but turn to Ivan.
Ivan, who was reading a book, looked up. He had of course heard Hermione and Harry’s conversation and quickly recited all the charges against Peter Pettigrew.
"The Muggle Protection Act, Article 3, Clause 27, stipulates that any wizard should avoid performing magic in public places in the Muggle world. Article 9, Clause 12, Clause 43..."
"See! I told you so!" Hermione huffed after Ivan finished, turning to Harry.
Harry was completely overwhelmed.
He had been watching Ivan read those books. In Harry’s memory, Ivan had been very casual, just flipping through the pages and glancing at them, spending no more than half a minute on each page.
It seemed like he was just pretending, but unexpectedly, Ivan had memorized everything.
Harry suddenly felt that the world was too cruel to someone like him, a struggling student!
He strongly suspected that Ivan had secretly gotten up last night to study, otherwise, how could he learn so fast!
Ivan, however, was unaware of Harry’s suspicions. While he often got up at night to sneak into the library to read banned books, memorizing legal clauses didn’t require such extreme measures.
Perhaps due to practicing Occlumency and using the Study Genius Card multiple times, Ivan noticed a significant improvement in his memory.
While he wasn’t quite at the level of remembering everything he saw, he could generally memorize things after a few readings, which was a considerable talent.
Hermione using Ivan as a model to set expectations for Harry was indeed a bit too much to ask.
Moreover, there was no need to memorize these legal clauses just to testify in court. Hermione was being overly perfectionistic.
However, Ivan didn’t interfere. For a troublemaker like Harry, learning a bit more wouldn’t hurt.
Maybe next time he would think twice before getting into trouble.
The next morning, Ivan was woken up by Harry.
Ron, who also got up early, was still yawning continuously.
"Why are we getting up so early?" Ivan glanced at the dim sky, wishing he could go back to bed for more sleep.
"It’s not early. The trial starts in three hours!" Harry, who had been sighing and complaining while studying last night, now looked completely energized, though he was also quite nervous.
"Maybe we should prepare something. What should we bring? And where is the Wizengamot? Have you been there before?"
Harry fumbled around, pulling out the Invisibility Cloak from under his bed, contemplating whether he should bring it.
If things went wrong and Sirius' appeal failed, he could perhaps use it to escape.
"Relax, we don't need to bring anything. We'll be back by tonight at the latest! Besides, Professor Dumbledore is the Chief Warlock of the Wizengamot, so we're bound to win this time!" Ivan reassured him.
The Wizengamot is the highest court in the wizarding world, consisting of about fifty members.
Due to the scarcity of wizards in the magical community, the court sometimes goes months without a case, so there is no dedicated courthouse. The entire trial process takes place in the Ministry of Magic's courtroom.
The trial process is quite straightforward, conducted in the form of questioning by the inquisitor, with a scribe responsible for taking notes, and the verdict is decided by a show of hands.
As Ivan imparted the knowledge he had read from books to Harry, they made their way towards the Great Hall.
It was not yet six o'clock, and the Great Hall was empty. Fortunately, the diligent house-elves were always on standby and served them a hearty breakfast.
Ivan enjoyed his meal leisurely, while Harry, even as he ate his breakfast, did not forget to glance at the Muggle Protection Act. He felt there were still a few key points he had not memorized, and last-minute cramming was not entirely useless.
An hour later, Dumbledore walked into the Great Hall.
Unlike his usual casual attire, Dumbledore was dressed in a deep purple robe today, adorned with intricate patterns along the edges, and a delicate silver "W" symbol embroidered on his left chest.
Ivan knew that this was the exclusive attire of a Wizengamot wizard, symbolizing Dumbledore's status as the Chief Warlock.
"Professor Dumbledore, will you be presiding over this trial?" Ivan asked curiously.
Since Dumbledore was the nominal head of the Wizengamot, he was likely to preside over this trial.
Harry also looked at Dumbledore expectantly, awaiting his response.
"No, I'm sorry, but I haven't received such a notification", Dumbledore shook his head under their gaze.
He had only just returned yesterday and did not have enough time to influence the other members of the Wizengamot to make a decision, so the presiding judge would most likely be someone from the Ministry of Magic.
Harry's expression turned somewhat disappointed.
"Don't worry, we have compelling evidence to prove Sirius' innocence", Dumbledore reassured them casually, then emphasized some of the rules of the Wizengamot and suggested that Hermione and Ron should also accompany them.
Upon hearing this, both of them were quite surprised.
"But I haven't made any preparations!" Hermione immediately became flustered; this was not part of her plan.
"You know more than any of us! What more preparation do you need?" Ivan teased, noting that the one who had been reading the most books these past few days was not himself or Harry, the key witnesses, but Hermione!
Ivan even suspected that the know-it-all could recite the various laws and regulations of the magical world backwards.
Hermione regained some confidence and then suddenly turned to Ron. "What about Ron? He doesn't know anything!"
Ron wanted to argue back indignantly, but he opened his mouth and found he had nothing to say.
Alright, he really didn't know anything.
