Chapter 453: Thinking Simply
Chapter 453: Thinking Simply
Su Heyuan hoped that the person Xie Kaishao sent would be no less capable, virtuous, and loyal than Gu Wenfeng. However, he was also aware that Gu Wenfeng's close protection of Lu Jiaxin was partly due to Xie Kaishao's guilt. Now, it was hard to say.
After some thought, Su Heyuan mentioned to Xie Kaishao about Lu Jiaxin's plan to donate three sets of medical equipment, hoping to strengthen his argument: "Medical equipment is very expensive, with a basic set costing over a million, and advanced technology pushing the price even higher. Her promise to donate three sets is estimated to cost over ten million. Uncle Xie, Jiaxin has always cared deeply for the mainland, and now that she's in danger, you can't just stand by."
Xie Kaishao was quite surprised: "Did she tell you this herself?"
Su Heyuan nodded: "Yes, she did. But she recently invested in a large project, and the funds won't be available until the end of the year. So, she can only make the purchase then or next year. You know Jiaxin always keeps her word."
Xie Kaishao naturally trusted Lu Jiaxin's words, and he smiled as he replied: "I understand."
Although he didn't make any promises, Su Heyuan knew that he would choose someone who was no less capable than Gu Wenfeng to protect Jiaxin. After all this time, he also realized that Jiaxin was blessed with good fortune, and being by her side wouldn't be a bad thing.
Su Heming, aware of Su Dong's misuse of his position for personal gain, no longer opposed his dismissal. However, he also made a request—to find a suitable replacement for Su Dong as soon as possible. He refused to go back to handling everything by himself, as it had exhausted him.
After resolving the matters in Pengcheng, Su Heyuan visited someone else before returning to Hong Kong. Once he arrived home, he called Lu Jiaxin to inform her that Xie Kaishao would recommend a new bodyguard.
He didn't trust those mercenaries. While they might not betray their employers, as their reputation was important in this line of work, they could always resign if someone offered them a higher salary. Thus, he had his doubts about them.
Lu Jiaxin remained silent for a moment before asking: "What did you tell Uncle Xie?"
Su Heyuan didn't deny it: "You've donated so much money and items. It's not unreasonable to ask him to find one or two capable bodyguards to protect you."
His own close bodyguard was a retired special forces soldier from the mainland, whom he had found through connections. But Lu Jiaxin's situation was more dangerous than his, and her bodyguard needed to possess not only excellent combat skills and rich experience but also a meticulous mind and comprehensive capabilities. Oh, and a willingness to learn—in the four years Gu Wenfeng had been with her, his Cantonese and English had become very fluent.
Lu Jiaxin no longer refused, saying: "They must be retired. I won't have them leave their service just to protect me; that would ruin their future."
Gu Wenfeng's case was unusual, and she had only learned about it later.
Su Heyuan smiled and said: "Rest assured, they will definitely be retired or close to retirement age. A young man in his twenties wouldn't meet the requirements anyway."
Upon hearing this, Lu Jiaxin agreed and then brought up Hu Huihui: "I called Hu's grandmother, but her youngest son has a fever, so we'll have to wait until the child recovers before we can meet."
Su Heyuan indicated that there was no rush, and then he told Lu Jiaxin about the kidnappers: "I found an experienced senior detective from the mainland, and I discussed your case with him. He analyzed that the mastermind behind the scenes might not be who we think it is."
It was because of this senior detective that he had returned a day later.
"Not our enemy?"
Su Heyuan nodded: "This senior detective has handled numerous major and difficult cases and has extremely rich experience. He said that sometimes, we complicate matters in our minds, trapping ourselves. In such situations, thinking simply can often lead to unexpected breakthroughs."
Lu Jiaxin pondered these words in her mind. Not an enemy, but thinking simply? That would mean looking at those who were inconspicuous and whom she hadn't offended.
However, no matter how much she thought about it, Lu Jiaxin couldn't come up with any leads. Her lifestyle was relatively simple, mostly revolving around school and business, and her interpersonal relationships were straightforward.
Su Heyuan furrowed his brows and said: "Jiaxin, have you ever thought about Nie Zhan?"
"What?"
"Do you think this kidnapping incident might have been instigated by Nie Zhan?"
Lu Jiaxin was taken aback: "Do you mean there's a woman who likes Nie Zhan, and out of jealousy towards me, she wants me dead?"
Su Heyuan felt that this possibility couldn't be ruled out.
Lu Jiaxin denied this speculation: "Nie Zhan only dated one girl in university, and he hasn't been in a relationship since. According to you, if that woman truly liked him that much, she would have definitely tried to get her family to arrange a meeting. But Nie Zhan hasn't gone on any blind dates, and there haven't been any infatuated women around him."
"What about Nie Zhan's ex-girlfriend then?"
Lu Jiaxin found this suggestion laughable: "Nie Zhan and she broke up ten years ago, and she's already married with children."
Su Heyuan still felt that the senior detective's words made sense: "Why don't you mention this to Nie Zhan and ask him to observe if there's anyone suspicious around him?"
"Alright."
Even though she said she didn't believe it, Lu Jiaxin hung up the phone and began to organize her thoughts. Perhaps the senior detective was right—they had been focusing on their enemies, but the mastermind could be someone inconspicuous from their surroundings.
Lu Jiaxin went through everyone she knew, eliminating them one by one. With this line of thinking, it was indeed possible that Nie Zhan had something to do with it. Of course, it wasn't likely to be a romantic dispute, but rather an enemy of Nie Zhan's. However, this explanation didn't make sense either. She and Nie Zhan weren't even married yet, let alone had children. If they killed her, Nie Zhan could always find someone else, so this theory didn't hold water.
Thinking about it made her feel frustrated, so Lu Jiaxin decided to stop. She changed into sportswear and went for a run, only stopping when she was drenched in sweat and out of breath.
Miao Na handed her a bottle of water and asked: "Boss, are you still worried about the kidnappers?"
Lu Jiaxin nodded: "As long as the mastermind is still out there, I'll be scared every time I step out of the house. Miao Na, who do you think the mastermind could be?"
Miao Na shook her head, indicating that she couldn't think of anyone: "Mr. Nie is investigating, right? He's so capable; he should be able to find out soon."
Lu Jiaxin felt that she shouldn't rely solely on Nie Zhan, and she needed to find someone else to investigate as well. Following the detective's analysis, she would have to approach this from the opposite direction of Nie Zhan.
As she was about to head upstairs for a shower, Nie Zhan called to say that he had an engagement that would keep him out late, so she shouldn't wait for him for dinner.
"Alright."
After taking a shower, Lu Jiaxin began to organize Nie Zhan's interpersonal relationships. Starting with the Nie family, she thought that Nie Manli had already accepted her, so it was unlikely that she would try to have her killed. Just as she was about to cross Nie Manli's name off the list, the phrase "think simply" popped into her mind. Although she felt it was improbable, she decided to investigate discreetly to see if there had been anything unusual with Nie Manli and her companions recently.
