Chapter 453: Master of Death
Chapter 453: Master of Death
"Don't say that, Severus! You should be more lenient with an old man. I occasionally make mistakes too", Dumbledore said, not intending to explain the matter of the Deathly Hallows in detail, but rather with a teasing tone.
Snape sneered at him, but quickly recalled something, his expression changing as he suspiciously stared at the old man in front of him.
"That's not right! Your injury has been there for several days. Otherwise, it wouldn't have worsened to this extent. But I only saw you a couple of days ago", Snape squinted his eyes and questioned.
"I was injured and couldn't meet others at that time", Dumbledore explained vaguely, stroking the golden ring and gazing at the burnt and cracked damage on it.
He had spent a considerable amount of time trying various methods to find a way to destroy the Horcrux—using the Fiendfyre curse!
Since he hadn't used dark magic for decades, he had almost forgotten how to cast it.
"So the person I met two days ago wasn't really you?" Snape's expression was grim.
Although Dumbledore didn't explicitly say who it was, Snape filtered through the possible candidates in his mind, and considering the recent strange behavior, he quickly came to a conclusion.
"It was Ivan Hals? That brat? He used Polyjuice Potion to look like you, with your permission?" Snape said with certainty.
Praising himself and adding several hundred points to Gryffindor House was exactly the kind of thing Ivan Hals would do.
The corners of Snape's mouth twitched as he recalled how he had gone to complain to the person just two days ago.
But how did Ivan Hals know about the agreement?
Snape was puzzled. This matter should have only been known to him and Dumbledore.
However, Snape remembered Ivan's response at the time.
He seemed to say: "Our agreement is still valid!"
Snape's face darkened as he realized he had been tricked. The response seemed to answer his question, but in reality, it said nothing.
"What's wrong? Did something happen?" Dumbledore noticed Snape's grim expression and raised an eyebrow, asking.
Snape didn't intend to reveal his past, instead shifting the topic to criticize Dumbledore for allowing an ungraduated child to take on the responsibilities of Headmaster, which seemed like a joke.
"However, he managed to fool Minister Fudge and all of us Professors. It seems that child is more suited for the position of Headmaster than you", Snape said sarcastically.
Dumbledore, however, didn't mind Snape's mocking words and instead looked quite pleased. He said,
"Is that what you think, Severus? That just proves I chose the right person! When selecting a proxy, I considered you and Minerva, but I thought the students might prefer a more unique Headmaster."
Though he said this, Dumbledore was very clear that neither Mcgonagall nor Snape was suitable for the role.
Mcgonagall was powerful and experienced, but her conservative and rigid nature would make her less effective against Fudge. She might be at a disadvantage.
Snape, with his longstanding feud with Sirius Black, was also not a suitable choice.
So, choosing Ivan Hals was a matter of necessity, as he couldn't find a better candidate. Fortunately, the results showed that he hadn't made the wrong choice.
Snape couldn't tolerate Dumbledore's crazy talk and wanted to ask how he could fulfill their agreement in his current state.
But he ultimately held back, understanding that the old man had been severely injured in the effort to eliminate the Dark Lord. He had no right to complain.
After leaving a few warnings, Snape briskly left the Headmaster's Office, leaving the elderly man alone once again.
Dumbledore pondered alone, but he didn't think about the Horcruxes. In his current state, it wasn't suitable to search for the next one.
He focused his attention on the two Deathly Hallows on the desk. He hesitated, then picked up the Elder Wand, using magic to draw a vertical line on the desk, and then put on the ring, adding a circle above the line.
Finally, Dumbledore thought of Harry's Invisibility Cloak and drew a triangle around the line and circle.
A faint magical glow connected them, forming a strange pattern resembling a triangular eye, with a vertical line instead of a pupil!
"Elder Wand, Resurrection Stone, Invisibility Cloak!" Dumbledore softly recited the names of the Deathly Hallows, pondering their secrets.
According to legend, the person who possessed all three Deathly Hallows would become the Master of Death.
But apart from the recently obtained Resurrection Stone, he had extensively researched the other two Deathly Hallows over a long period.
However, he found no significant results, as if these two items were merely powerful alchemical objects, leading him to doubt the authenticity of the legends.
"Does 'possessing all' mean the three must be brought together?" Dumbledore gazed at the pattern, a thought suddenly coming to mind. Perhaps combining the three Deathly Hallows would trigger a miraculous change.
But the Resurrection Stone had been damaged during the destruction of the Horcrux, and he wasn't sure if it would affect anything.
Meanwhile, in the Gryffindor common room, surrounded by a pile of books, Harry finally couldn't take it anymore and burst out.
"Merlin's beard! Why am I spending so much time studying the International Statute of Secrecy and the Muggle Protection Act? This has nothing to do with the case!" Harry complained loudly.
But his voice was quickly hushed by Hermione, who glared at him and countered,
"How can it be unrelated? Open the book and read it. Peter Pettigrew killed thirteen Muggles, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Muggle Protection Act!
And he used a mass-killing spell in the street, revealing the existence of the magical world, which violates the International Statute of Secrecy!"
"Furthermore, as a Death Eater, Peter committed seven war crimes, all of which are covered by the International Statute of Secrecy."
Hermione spoke confidently and then looked at Harry in surprise. "I remember you've been reading for almost an hour. Haven't you memorized these clauses yet?"
