Chapter 45: The Fireball Jutsu that Shocked the Audience
Chapter 45: The Fireball Jutsu that Shocked the Audience
"It's your turn, Obito." Rin Nohara reminded gently.
Obito nodded and quickly made his way onto the stage.
"Obito, good luck!" Rin clenched her fists, cheering him on.
"Obito, it's your turn to face Kakashi. Show us what you've learned!" Might Guy added, offering his encouragement as well.
They had all trained together under Mu Yue, and Guy had witnessed Obito's dedication firsthand.
"Don't lose before you even start." Kakashi said nonchalantly, offering his own brand of encouragement.
Kakashi's words had a noticeable effect on Obito, who turned and replied, "Impossible! Just you wait and see!"
"Yet another Uchiha participant, how rare. I wonder what kind of performance he will put on for us." The host marveled, grateful for the influx of cash that had attracted not one, but two Uchiha contestants.
"Obito's competing too? He's a bit unlucky, having another Uchiha perform so impressively right before him. The contrast will be embarrassing." Asuma Sarutobi already felt second-hand embarrassment for Obito.
He had known Obito for over three years, and he was well aware of his skill level. While Obito had learned the Fireball Jutsu, his proficiency was mediocre at best.
"He's participating as well." Uchiha Tekka frowned upon seeing Obito take the stage, feeling his bet of 8000 ryo might not be as secure as he'd thought.
"But the judges aren't that skilled. Perhaps they won't be able to discern the true might of the Fire Dragon Jutsu." Uchiha Tekka considered another possibility.
While the Fire Dragon Jutsu was a B-rank Fire Release ninjutsu, a step above the Fireball Jutsu in terms of learning difficulty, its visual impact was not as striking.
"Uchiha Obito, what ninjutsu will you be performing for us today?" The host asked, following the usual protocol.
"I will be using the Fire Release: Fireball Jutsu." Obito replied confidently.
"Another Fireball Jutsu? Have all the Uchiha youths mastered this technique? As expected of a prestigious clan. Let's look forward to Uchiha Obito's performance." The host said as he backed away to a safe distance—a wise decision given the destructive nature of the jutsu.
"Could he have achieved such a high level of proficiency in both the Fire Dragon Jutsu and the Fireball Jutsu?" Uchiha Tekka wondered, feeling that it was a bit far-fetched.
He had absolute faith in Obito's clanmate, Uchiha Itachi, but Obito had previously been known as the Uchiha clan's failure.
Obito stood on the stage, gazing down at the audience below, taking in the sight of familiar faces.
Rin Nohara was there, smiling and cheering him on.
Might Guy flashed his brilliant white teeth and gave him a thumbs up.
Kakashi maintained his gaze, focused on the stage.
Itachi offered what seemed like words of encouragement.
Asuma wore an expression of pity.
And then there was Mu Yue...
"Mu Yue-sensei!" Obito's face lit up with delight at the sight of his teacher. His only regret today was that Mu Yue had to leave to tutor elsewhere and couldn't watch his performance.
Obito was incredibly grateful to Mu Yue. She had helped him shed the label of the Uchiha failure, defeat Uchiha Tekka to become second in their class, and even pass the theory exams that had always eluded him.
Her influence had played a significant role in his newfound confidence.
During those twenty days of intensive training, it wasn't just Obito who had worked tirelessly. Mu Yue had gone above and beyond to enhance his abilities, even modifying the Fireball Jutsu to better suit him.
Obito felt a twinge of disappointment that Mu Yue wouldn't be there to witness his victory and the culmination of their joint efforts.
Noticing Obito's gaze, Mu Yue offered him a smile and a wave.
"I can't let down the people who are cheering for me." Obito took a deep breath, steeling himself as he entered a state of unparalleled focus.
The memory of his failure years ago still haunted him, and this time, he was determined to emerge victorious.
Huff! Huff!!
Intense flames erupted from Obito's mouth, swiftly forming an orange-red fireball that grew larger by the second. Finally, it towered at a height of four meters, almost three times his own stature.
"There's no way a student from the Ninja Academy could cast such an advanced Fire Style jutsu!" One of the judges exclaimed, astounded by the spectacle before him.
Another judge rubbed his eyes, equally bewildered by what he was witnessing.
"Uchiha Obito's Grand Fireball technique is extraordinarily skilled, even surprising the judges!" The host marveled, remembering to provide a lively commentary amidst his astonishment.
In his five years of hosting, he had never seen a Grand Fireball of this caliber, especially not from a student of the Ninja Academy.
"How is this level of Grand Fireball even possible!" Uchiha Tekka felt as if he were under an illusion.
He would rather believe he was under a genjutsu than accept that Obito could excel so remarkably in the Grand Fireball while also mastering the Fire Dragon technique.
With such prowess in the Grand Fireball, Obito wouldn't need any tricks; he could have easily defeated him the other day.
"Is that Obito's Grand Fireball?" Asuma Sarutobi rubbed his eyes, feeling like he was imagining things.
"Teacher, hit me. I feel like I'm under a genjutsu," Asuma said to Mu Yue.
Mu Yue obliged Asuma's request, using two fingers to tap him on the head.
"Ouch," Asuma said, still staring at the massive fireball in front of Obito on the stage, his mouth hanging open in shock.
He could accept his defeat at the hands of Uchiha Stop, acknowledging that he might be a freakish genius on par with or even surpassing Kakashi.
But Obito was his old friend, and he knew his capabilities well.
What sorcery was this fireball that nearly reached the height of the house? Had Obito been secretly hiding his strength all this time?
"Even Obito has such incredible power. Am I really that inferior?" Asuma began to doubt himself.
He felt the need to step up his game; otherwise, he wouldn't just fall short of surpassing the Third Hokage but would also be left behind by his friends.
"This level of Grand Fireball explains his earlier confidence," Kakashi thought, impressed by Obito's progress.
The scale of Obito's improvement made Kakashi suspicious. It was unusual for a student who hadn't even graduated to exhibit such a massive leap in strength.
Typically, the period of rapid strength increase came after graduation.
"Ten, ten, ten! Uchiha Obito achieves a perfect score of thirty points! He secures the top rank in advance!" The host shouted excitedly.
All the judges had given Obito full marks, an extremely rare occurrence.
"Some trickery, perhaps?" Hyuuga Hizashi, having activated his Byakugan, saw through the intricacies of Obito's Grand Fireball. It appeared more impressive than it actually was.
He had come to accompany his friends, and now it seemed evident that Obito would claim the first place.
However, Hizashi didn't think Obito could defeat him in the next final exam, as he planned to ensure Obito couldn't cast any ninjutsu.
"The host already announced that you've secured first place. Great job, Obito!" Rin Nohara praised Obito as he stepped down from the stage.
"Hehe," Obito replied, unable to contain his goofy smile.
"Don't get too excited yet. When it's my turn, they might break the rules and give an even higher score," Kakashi said, reminding Obito not to get complacent.
"And now, let's welcome the fifth contestant, Hatake Kakashi, to the stage."
As Kakashi finished speaking, the host called out his name.
