Chapter 45: Jerry Flies on a Flying Broom
Chapter 45: Jerry Flies on a Flying Broom
"Wuhu!"
Compared to the limited space in the warehouse, riding a flying broom in the vast sky offered a far more exhilarating experience.
The cool, wild summer breeze whistled past his ears, and his wizard robe fluttered in the wind like a pair of black wings.
At a top speed of 60 miles per hour, equivalent to 100 kilometers per hour for a car, it wasn’t particularly fast. However, the freedom of flying in the open air, unobstructed by anything, was far more thrilling than driving on the ground.
Of course, this was only possible in the summer. If he tried this in the winter, he’d probably end up in the hospital with an IV drip and a cold the next day.
After flying for a while and feeling the cold wind from the high altitude almost turn him into a popsicle, Jerry began to lower his altitude, weaving through the skyscrapers and heading toward areas he had previously been unable to reach.
In the past, his patrol range was limited because he had to rely on his legs. He mainly patrolled the streets and alleys around his neighborhood.
His frequent appearances had significantly reduced the crime rate in the area, which in turn reduced his efficiency in earning Little Red Stars.
Now, with a flying broom, he could expand his patrol range without worrying about being late to get home.
Flying in the air also provided a much better view, allowing him to spot criminal activities more quickly and accurately.
In a high-end duplex on the top floor of a building in Queens,
a family of three was tied to the ground, while two masked burglars, one tall and one thin, were holding knives to the father’s throat, demanding the password to the safe.
Though the father was furious, he reluctantly gave the burglars the safe’s password to ensure his family’s safety.
As the burglars opened the safe in the bedroom and excitedly stuffed stacks of dollar bills into a suitcase they had prepared, a black silhouette appeared at the bedroom window.
"If it weren’t for the flying broom, I wouldn’t have stumbled upon such a lucky break!"
While flying between the skyscrapers, Jerry suddenly noticed someone breaking into a room in a nearby building. He immediately felt a surge of excitement.
Pulling out his wand, he made a shushing gesture to the little girl in her mother’s arms, who had just seen him and widened her eyes in surprise.
Jerry cast an Alohomora spell at the bedroom window.
"Click!"
The window lock clicked open.
Hearing the sound and the sudden gust of cool air, the two burglars and the parents, who were staring intently at the intruders, turned their heads.
They all wore expressions of disbelief.
What did they see?
They saw a child dressed in a Halloween wizard outfit, riding what looked like a broom, floating outside the window.
Floating outside the window?
How was that even possible?
This was the 28th floor, over a hundred meters above the ground!
"Good evening!"
After opening the window, Jerry politely waved his wand at the four stunned individuals inside.
Before the burglars could recover from their shock, he pointed his wand at each of them and cast a spell.
"Petrify!"
Instantly, the two burglars, hit by the magic beams, stiffened and fell to the ground with a thud, the dollar bills scattering everywhere.
Full Body Bind, Jerry spent a considerable amount of time finding this spell in a magic book called Curses and Counter-Curses in the library.
It's a very practical offensive spell. Even with his level of magic, he can instantly petrify an ordinary adult.
However, this petrification is different from the kind caused by a Basilisk.
Full Body Bind merely uses magical power to bind your limbs, but your eyes can still move, and your consciousness remains intact. All your senses, including sight, hearing, touch, taste, and smell, function normally.
Once affected, the spell can be undone with a general counter-curse or will wear off on its own after a certain time.
But the petrification caused by a Basilisk is different. It turns you into stone, leaving you with no sensations at all. If no method is found to break the curse, you are essentially no different from a corpse.
These two spells are not on the same level.
"Flavordus!"
After binding the two robbers, Jerry pointed his wand at the rope around the father's wrist in the bedroom and used a Transfiguration Charm to turn it into spaghetti.
Finally, he pointed his wand at the dollar bills in the safe:
"Accio Dollar Bills!"
Two hundred-dollar bills flew out of the safe and into his hand.
The Summoning Charm is an ancient spell that Jerry learned from A Guide to Medieval Magic. It is also taught in the fourth-year Charms textbook. Its function is simple but highly useful.
When you attempt to summon an object, you must focus your mind and clearly visualize the object. No matter where it is, it will fly to you.
However, this is a spell that is easy to learn but difficult to master.
In short, the weight, size, material, whether it has magical properties, the distance from you, and whether it is living or non-living, all these factors can affect the success rate of the Summoning Charm.
For example, Jerry was only summoning two light dollar bills, which made it easy to succeed. If he had tried to summon the heavy safe directly, it would have been much harder.
If the safe was not nearby but in another room, the difficulty would have increased even more.
If he had tried to summon something magical or a living creature, the difficulty would have increased significantly.
Additionally, you cannot use the Summoning Charm to summon a person; it will have no effect.
Even if his Summoning Charm skills were highly advanced, he couldn't simply say "Accio Elsa" to summon his sister, who was sprawled out and sleeping at home.
"My magic can only hold them for ten minutes, so call the police quickly. Consider these two bills as payment for my help!"
Putting the dollar bills in his pocket, Jerry mounted his flying broom and disappeared through the window with a swoosh.
The father, realizing what had happened, quickly freed himself from the spaghetti, untied his wife and daughter, and ran to the window to look out.
As he watched Jerry's figure riding the flying broom disappear into the sky, he couldn't help but exclaim:
"Oh my God, there really is magic in this world!"
Remembering Jerry's warning about the ten minutes, he quickly tied up the two petrified robbers with the rope and called the police.
