Chapter 449: The Return of Dumbledore
Chapter 449: The Return of Dumbledore
Harry and Ron also noticed this and turned their heads to look at Ivan in surprise. They hadn't detected Ivan's presence at all when they were at the Astronomy Tower.
"Ivan, how did you manage to do that?" Hermione looked at Ivan, asking curiously.
"Just a few special spells can do the trick. Those Dementors aren't very smart, so it's not that hard to fool them", Ivan said vaguely, trying to brush it off. He then quickly changed the subject.
"By the way, Harry! You all should be more careful and don't go looking for Sirius again! Although I helped cover for you this time, the Aurors haven't given up on finding the person who sneaked into the Astronomy Tower."
Harry and the others nodded hurriedly. Despite their many questions, they didn't dare to ask more due to their guilt.
Hermione then tossed the books she was holding onto the table with a thud, clapped her hands, and said, "Since that's settled, it's time to get down to business!"
Ivan glanced at the thick books on the table and whistled in amazement.
*Collection of Recent Major Case Trials*, *Advanced Defense Techniques*, *1983 British (Wizarding) Law Revisions*, *The Self-Cultivation of a Defense Attorney*.
"I'm just going to testify. Do I really need to read all these books?" Harry looked at the thickness of the books and felt an impulse to run away.
"Do you know how to be a proper witness?" Hermione glared at him, opened *Advanced Defense Techniques*, and flipped through the pages, pointing at the content.
"I've reviewed over a hundred major cases. I bet the defense attorney will try to trip you up in the Wizengamot. They will pick apart your words and even try to lead you to false conclusions."
"So you need to be prepared before the trial! Even a small advantage could make a difference!" Hermione added.
"But who would get a defense attorney for Peter Pettigrew?" Ron sneered, voicing his skepticism.
But before he could finish, Hermione rebutted him.
"Peter's mother is still alive. I found in the records that after Peter disappeared, the Ministry of Magic awarded him the Order of Merlin, First Class, which his mother collected. Even if no one is willing to defend Peter, the Wizengamot will appoint someone!"
Harry looked at the pile of books on the table, his face contorted in distress. He had never been interested in reading, let alone these dry extracurricular books.
But to help Sirius, Harry gritted his teeth and picked up one of the books to start reading.
Ivan glanced at the thickness of the books on the table and silently mourned for Harry, knowing he would be busy for the next few days.
As Ivan was contemplating this, he turned to see Hermione staring at him intently.
"What's the matter, Hermione?" Ivan asked, puzzled.
"If I'm not mistaken, Ivan, you caught Peter Pettigrew, so you should be an important witness too!" Hermione shoved the book on British (Wizarding) Law Revisions into Ivan's hands and said firmly.
"Do I really have to read this too?" Ivan's lips twitched uncontrollably. He hadn't expected Hermione to turn her attention to him.
He had too many things to do recently and had no interest in learning the wizarding world's laws. Ivan didn't think he would be stumped by the defense attorney.
"Do you know how the Wizengamot operates and the specific crimes Peter has committed?" Hermione questioned him one by one.
Ivan opened his mouth to answer, but he had no idea about the Western judicial process, let alone the wizarding world's.
"Fine, I'll read it!" Ivan sighed, resigned, and started flipping through the book in his hands.
He suddenly remembered that with Dumbledore absent, Sirius might need him to find a defense attorney. It wouldn't hurt to know more about the laws.
Hermione sat beside him, explaining the relevant legal clauses and pointing out important details. It was clear that the young witch had already read the entire book in her spare time.
Seeing Hermione's seriousness, Ivan changed his casual attitude and began to study with renewed vigor.
After some research, Ivan discovered that the Ministry of Magic's trial process was quite similar to that of Muggles, but much simpler.
This made sense, given the small population of the British wizarding world, so there was no need for complicated procedures.
During these days of cramming the wizarding laws, Ivan didn't forget to keep an eye on Peter's condition. He would transform into an Owl and secretly visit Peter every day.
Peter, imprisoned in the Astronomy Tower, looked pitiful. He seemed to have been severely tormented by the Dementors, appearing dazed and mumbling about the Dark Lord's return.
The Ministry's investigators confirmed that Peter's memory was indeed impaired, and his current state was not an act.
Ivan looked at Peter, remembering his betrayal of his friends, and wondered if this was karma.
After a moment of reflection, Ivan didn't stay long and quickly returned to the castle, heading towards the Headmaster's Office.
If his calculations were correct, today was the day the Order of the Phoenix would respond to his request. He wondered if they would agree.
"Acid Pops!"
Ivan confidently recited the password to enter the Headmaster's Office. The heavy guardian statue slowly turned, revealing the entrance.
Ivan walked in as usual, then paused, his expression changing.
The central office was cluttered with various trinkets, and to his surprise, Dumbledore, who had been missing for a long time, was sitting in his chair, reading a letter.
The golden-red feathered Phoenix Fawkes perched affectionately on his shoulder, occasionally chirping melodiously, as if speaking to him.
"Professor Dumbledore?" Ivan asked tentatively. The events of the past few days made him uncertain if the person in front of him was really the old Professor.
But it must be him, as Fawkes had never been so affectionate with him.
"It's me, Hals!" Dumbledore stopped reading, turned to look at him, and nodded.
