Chapter 449: Reconciliation (First Update)
Above a grassy field far from the city in the outskirts of New York.
Suddenly, a massive ring of fire appeared out of nowhere, and a Quinjet emerged through it, landing on the grass.
"Sure enough, with you around, any problem can be solved!"
Seeing the flight that would normally take several hours reduced to just a few seconds, Tony couldn't help but exclaim.
He remembered that when he and Jerry went after those Extremis Warriors, they had to fly or rely on that temperamental Fire Dragon. Now, they could open a Spatial Portal and arrive directly at their destination.
It was clear that Jerry's Magic had become even more powerful.
"Magic is such a convenient ability. How about I teach you some when you have time?"
Jerry joked.
Tony immediately shook his head.
"Thanks, but I don't have a talent for that. I'll stick to working on my War Armor!"
Although Magic was powerful, it wasn't his thing.
After everyone got off the Quinjet, they found themselves on a lush green lawn, with some woods and a lake nearby, making the scene look peaceful and beautiful.
In the center of the lawn stood a two-story European-style mini mansion with a large fenced yard.
"This place does look very safe!"
Tony scanned the area and noticed that there were hardly any signs of high-tech devices.
Thus, the six Avengers, six members of the Guardians of the Galaxy, and Jerry—thirteen people in total—marched along the path and pushed open the door to enter the villa.
"Dear, I'm home!"
As soon as they entered the villa, Barton called out.
Following Barton's voice, a beautiful woman with a big belly, holding a sketchbook, came down the stairs from the second floor, looking surprised.
"Guests have arrived. Sorry, I didn't tell you in advance!"
Barton gave the woman a hug and a kiss.
At that moment, Tony whispered to Jerry:
"She's probably an agent!"
Ever since being deceived by Black Widow, Tony suspected anyone related to S.H.I.E.L.D. of being an agent.
"She's just pregnant."
Jerry rolled his eyes. Which agent would be pregnant and still on a mission?
Barton then introduced the pregnant woman:
"This is my wife, Laura!"
Everyone quickly smiled and raised their hands in greeting.
Laura turned her head and smiled, saying:
"I've known about you all. Who are they?"
When she saw Captain America and the others, Laura smiled, as she often saw them on TV and Barton had told her about them, including the fact that the Witch is actually male.
But when she glanced past Jerry and saw Star-Lord, her expression turned puzzled, as she didn't recognize him.
When she saw Gamora, Nebula, and Drax, her eyes widened in surprise. These people had such unusual skin colors; were they cosplayers?
Finally, when she saw Groot, who was almost touching the ceiling, and Rocket, who was sitting on his shoulder with a Shock Gun, she was completely stunned.
"Madam, we are friends of the Witch. We come from beyond Earth and are the Guardians of the Galaxy, who protect the safety of the galaxy!"
Star-Lord stepped forward to introduce them.
During the flight, he had learned about Jerry's title and some of his deeds on Earth.
As Laura was amazed that aliens had come to her home, two children—a boy and a girl—ran down the stairs, shouting "Dad" and happily leaped into Barton's arms.
Clearly, these two children were Barton and Lola's son and daughter.
"These two are definitely little agents. He even told me he didn't have a girlfriend! Agents can't be trusted to say a single honest word!"
Tony's eyes showed a hint of envy.
Jerry chuckled and teased:
"He just said he didn't have a girlfriend, but he didn't say he didn't have a wife or kids. You and Pepper should hurry up. If it doesn't work, I can brew you a potion. It's guaranteed to hit the mark on the first try!"
"Really that effective?"
Tony's eyes widened.
"Ahem, I definitely don't need it, but I have a friend who wants a child soon. If your potion really works, give me some to take back to him next time."
"This was something Fury arranged for me after I joined. It's not in S.H.I.E.L.D.'s files, and I really appreciate that!"
After letting go of the children, Barton explained to everyone.
An hour later.
Hawkeye and his wife Lola went upstairs to the master bedroom to change clothes, Dr. Banner and Black Widow went to the guest room to shower, and Star-Lord was chatting with Thor, trying to get some favors. Star-Lord asked if Asgard had anything they no longer needed, and the two seemed to get along well.
Gamora and Nebula were taking a walk in the woods, while Groot and Rocket were surrounded by Hawkeye's two children.
In the large yard outside the villa, at Lola's request, Tony and Rogers were each holding an axe and helping to chop wood, though they both had blank expressions.
"Did Fury and Coulson say when they would arrive?"
Jerry, seeing the two stiff figures, broke the silence with a sigh.
Steve immediately replied:
"They should be here soon, considering we arrived over five hours early."
"I just checked with Hill. At the Quinjet's speed, they should be here in about five minutes!"
Tony chimed in.
Steve then laughed:
"I wonder what Fury's face will look like when he sees those aliens."
"I bet he'll be surprised. That's why I didn't mention that Jerry brought a few aliens back on the plane!"
Tony's face also broke into a smile.
At that moment, the awkward and tense atmosphere finally dissipated.
"Tony, I'm really sorry, even though I know words won't change anything."
Steve looked at Tony and sincerely apologized again.
This time, Tony didn't refuse. He just sighed and said:
"Let's just put this behind us. I'm not someone who lets hatred consume me. I heard he's now part of Coulson's S.H.I.E.L.D. team?"
"Yes, his heart is in a lot of pain. He wants to use the rest of his life and his abilities to make up for the mistakes he made while under Hydra's control."
Steve's voice carried a hint of sadness.
For a man filled with justice, a warrior who was willing to sacrifice himself to defeat Hydra, to find out that he had killed so many innocent people under Hydra's control, the realization must have been devastating.
"Perhaps if Father were here, he would choose to forgive him too."
Tony murmured these words.
Bucky, as a member of the Howling Commandos, was definitely acquainted with Howard Stark, who provided them with equipment. They were even friends.
To have a fallen friend, under the enemy's control, come to assassinate him must have been a complex and painful experience for Howard.
