Chapter 449: A Scene at the Club
Chapter 449: A Scene at the Club
"Although I eventually abandoned this approach because my spell strength improved quickly, making it unsuitable for Runes to enhance, and there were several drawbacks, such as the need for multitasking... I believe it might be more suitable for you at this stage."
Felix said softly, "From Mr. Diggory's performance, it's quite remarkable that you thought to combine 'Waterflow' with the Water Creation Spell. I suggest you continue to experiment with this when you have the time, for example—"
He paused, giving everyone a moment to think.
"'Fire' Runes and the Fire Spell", Hermione responded excitedly, "and 'Light' Runes with the Lumos."
Felix smiled at her. "It seems Miss Granger has already tried this. Let's break into groups and study which Runes and spells can combine and enhance each other... especially since your recent magical control has improved significantly."
The members of the Rune Club grinned, recalling their nerve-wracking experience with the Billywig.
Felix straightened up from the soft sofa cushion and waved his wand. A shallow stone basin flew over from the shelf. The students exchanged glances, though they had done this before, they still felt a bit apprehensive about the process.
"We'll go first!" Fred and George Weasley said in unison. They simultaneously dipped their fingers into the silvery substance in the stone basin and were instantly sucked in.
"Wow~ Hahahaha~" Their excited shouts became muffled, as if coming from the bottom of a well.
A row of young wizards gathered around, waiting quietly for a few seconds. They then heard two clear "thuds."
"Safe landing", Ron grinned.
"Right! We're waiting for you!" Fred called out from the space within the basin, his voice echoing.
"So that's what they had in mind..." Ron muttered. "The first ones in won't have to see their faces when they hit the ground." He plunged his entire face into the silvery substance and disappeared.
One by one, the young wizards dove into the stone basin. This time, unlike when they were learning Lumos, there wasn't a fixed professor waiting for them. Felix had simply provided a spacious and suitable place for casting spells.
Felix's voice boomed from above the stone basin, like a thunderclap. "You'll stick to the same groups as last time."
Inside the stone basin, Harry couldn't help but gasp, and Ron's expression turned grim. They both glanced at Draco Malfoy, who looked equally uncomfortable.
At the last Rune Club meeting, Professor Hup had suggested they work together to control the Billywig's movement space in groups of three. Hermione had been pulled away to guide Luna and Ginny, and by the time she realized, Draco Malfoy was already standing in front of them with ill intent.
"I applied some potion before coming; the Billywig hates this smell..." Draco said slowly, his eyes gleaming.
"You learned that during the Christmas holiday?" Harry said angrily.
"Oh, of course not. Haven't you felt my Paralysis Spell?" Draco said with a satisfied smile. The look on his face reminded Harry of their duel in Professor Moody's class.
"My Body-Bind Spell isn't pleasant either, is it?" Harry grinned.
Draco's pale face turned red, and he stammered, "I was too careless. You cheated..."
"Really? Professor Moody doesn't think so. He was very displeased with your action of attacking first without orders, Malfoy", Ron said with interest. "You almost achieved a milestone—getting turned into a creature by two Professor Moodys..." He said this with a nostalgic tone, ignoring Draco's increasingly dangerous glare. "If Professor Flitwick hadn't been there, we might have seen that happen."
That gathering was the worst time Ron had ever been stung, and Harry, like a fish in the pond, was also affected.
...
The three of them stood facing each other, forming a small circle, and when they gathered again, they were extremely cautious. Harry's eyes darted back and forth, looking at Ron on one side and Draco on the other, and the other two were doing the same.
"Weasley, Potter, my mom recently plans to have a record cast, not by the Weird Sisters... they don't fit the aesthetic of someone of high status..."
"What are you trying to say?" Ron said angrily, wishing he could cast a nasty curse at Malfoy.
"Oh", Draco paused, a slight smile appearing on his pale face, "I was talking about a magical phonograph. You don't have one of those at your house, do you, Weasley?"
"My house doesn't need that kind of thing!" Ron said, his face turning red.
"Is that so..." Draco raised his head in satisfaction, "L.C.A Publishing recently released a classic edition of comic strips, and I've collected a set."
Ron was so angry he was shaking, unable to even sketch out Runic Script, with sparks constantly shooting from the tip of his wand.
"That doesn't mean anything", Harry said.
"What did you say?" Draco stared at Harry intently.
"What you were talking about... those expensive things, the comic strips, and all that. You can buy them if you have money", Harry said. "I don't see what you bring to the table. It's all your family's money, not you, isn't it?"
Draco looked at him with a dark expression, slowly speaking, "The Malfoys have always been like this."
"Is that so?" Harry said sharply, "It sounds quite inspiring, but we value what money can't buy. Even though you bought the collector's edition of the comic strips, the content is the same, and Ron has read it at least five times—"
"Actually, it's the sixth time", Ron said, calming down, "I know some of the lines by heart. That's why I did well in the second project... didn't the professor put those books on a separate shelf in the library?"
"We can have a contest, see who knows more", he said, looking at Draco provocatively.
Draco scoffed, "I'm not interested. Maybe you're hoping to follow in your father's footsteps? Heading to the Department of Misuse of Muggle Artifacts after graduation?"
"You're talking nonsense", Ron said through gritted teeth, breathing heavily. Harry pointed to a distance, where Ginny and Hermione were watching, and Luna seemed to be moving closer to see the commotion.
For a long while, none of the three spoke—
"You know what we should do", Harry said.
"Right", Ron agreed.
"Sorry, I have some questions..." Draco drawled.
"Is that so, what do you think?" Ron finally couldn't hold back his anger, whispering angrily, "Either behave, or we'll cast a tickle jinx on your nose!"
Draco: "...You wouldn't dare."
"The professor didn't follow us down, maybe he's sleeping on the couch upstairs", Ron speculated irresponsibly, but his words clearly made Draco's expression uncertain.
The rest of the time went smoothly, except for the occasional noise—
"Weasley, tsk tsk! How did you think of combining 'Waterflow' and the Fire Spell? Hoping to get some steam? How do you plan to control it?"
"Potter! Let me handle it, my Crushing Curse is more proficient. I suggest combining it with Light Runic Script..."
"Shut up, Malfoy!" they both said.
