Chapter 446: Regulus
Chapter 446: Regulus
Unconsciously, Kyle reached out and was about to take out the pendant box.
"Be careful." Sirius reminded him, "This thing might be some weird and wonderful Dark artifact."
"That's right, you're right."
Despite saying this, Kyle still took out the pendant box and gently wiped off the dust on it.
The pendant box was the size of an egg, heavy, and on the front was an elaborate S, made of several small emeralds, glowing dimly in the dim light.
"This isn't something from the Black family; I've never seen it before." Sirius leaned over, deep in thought, and said, "It's probably some trash they bought from somewhere, so let's throw it away to avoid any curses or Dark magic on it."
"This isn't trash!" A sharp voice came from behind.
It was Kreacher, panting heavily, looking extremely angry. Then he stared at Sirius and let out a blood-curdling scream.
"This is Master Regulus' pendant box, and he asked Kreacher to bring it back!"
"Regulus?" Lupin said, "I remember he's your brother, right? When you were in school, you two didn't get along and often argued."
"That's right." Sirius lowered his head and said softly, "My foolish brother was too weak-willed. He easily believed in our parents' pure-blood ideology, thinking that the Black family was naturally noble. We argued about this every time, and it always ended on bad terms."
"Master Regulus is not a fool!" Kreacher screamed, "He's the master's favorite son, much better than Master Sirius!"
"I don't need you to remind me!" Sirius shouted irritably, "Everyone says the same, but in the end, what happened? He died, that stupid idiot... He joined the Death Eaters!"
He panted heavily, his eyes red, and said,
"Let's throw this thing away; it's very likely a Dark artifact used by the Death Eaters to harm people."
"No!" Kreacher screamed and jumped up to snatch the pendant box from Kyle's hand.
This was the first time he tried to snatch something in front of Sirius.
However, Kyle just lifted his hand slightly and dodged it.
"I can't let you have this." Kyle said.
Kreacher tried to snatch it again but was sternly stopped.
"Stand there and don't move!" Sirius ordered.
Kreacher dared not disobey the direct order, but when he raised his head, the look he gave Sirius was filled with bone-deep resentment.
"Do you know what this is?" Lupin suddenly asked, who had been silent all this time.
"I know." This time, Kyle didn't hide it and said directly, "You should have heard of this thing too... Slytherin's Pendant Box."
"What?"
The room fell into a brief silence.
Lupin, realizing what it was, took a deep breath, his face filled with disbelief.
"Wait, you mean, it can't be the Slytherin from school, can it...?"
"That's right, it's Salazar Slytherin." Kyle caressed the emerald on the pendant box, "Just like the legendary Sword of Gryffindor."
"Wait..." Sirius was still a bit dazed, "Let me think... Slytherin's Pendant Box... in Regulus' hands... and finally put it in the Black family's house.
"Kyle, you must be joking, or this is probably a fake... Although I left this house when I was sixteen, I'm very clear that the Blacks and Slytherins have absolutely no connection."
Lupin's reaction was similar; he thought Regulus must have admired Slytherin so much that he made a replica.
"I'm not sure if the pendant box is real or fake, but I do know its other name."
"Another name? What is it?"
"Professor Lupin..." Kyle asked, "I think you should have heard of it too. The Chamber of Secrets at Hogwarts."
"Of course, I've heard of it, but not in much detail. The professors don't like to talk about it."
Lupin said, "It's said to be related to the Dark Lord."
"That's right. Because of a diary, left behind when he was in school, the castle was in an uproar, and it almost caused Hogwarts to close down.
Kyle raised the pendant box, "This thing gives me the same feeling as that diary back then."
...
The room fell silent again, and this time the silence lasted longer.
Lupin and Sirius were both trying to digest this answer, and their first reaction was surprisingly consistent, both feeling that Kyle had made a mistake.
But after such a long time of contact, they knew that Kyle was not the kind of person who would shoot without a target.
"But why." Sirius's voice was dry, "The Dark Lord's things would have been given to Regulus, as far as I know, he was not trusted like Malfoy and LeStrange."
"Then you have to ask him." Kyle did not explain, but looked at Kreacher, who was trembling beside him.
"Tell me, why is this thing here." Sirius asked in a low voice, "What does Regulus have to do with it."
The elf seemed to think of something terrible, and his body trembled again, curling up into a ball. When he spoke, his voice was low and muffled.
"Sirius ran away, which was good because he was a bad boy, but Regulus had self-respect. He knew what the surname Black and his pure blood meant... In order for the wizard to stop hiding, he joined the Dark Lord's organization when he was sixteen, and he was so proud..."

"A year later, one day Regulus came to the kitchen to see Kreacher. He said that the Dark Lord needed an elf... He contributed Kreacher, which was an honor for him and Kreacher..."
Kreacher's voice choked, and he told how he was taken into a cave by Voldemort and forced to drink the potion in the stone basin...
"He threw a pendant box into the empty basin and filled the basin with potion... Then the Dark Lord boarded the ship and left, leaving Kreacher on the island..."
"Kreacher felt terrible, and he wanted to drink from the lake... Many hands reached out from the water, trying to drag Kreacher down..."
"Then how did you escape." Sirius asked.
The elf raised his ugly head, "Regulus told Kreacher to go home."
"What happened after that." Sirius's voice became much softer, "Why did this thing appear here."
"Kreacher told Regulus about it... hoping to be praised... but he wasn't.
"Regulus was very worried, and he told Kreacher to hide... After a while, Regulus told Kreacher to take him to the cave, the same cave that Kreacher had been to with the Dark Lord."
"He made you drink the potion too." Sirius said with disgust.
Kreacher shook his head, and at some point, he was already crying, tears streaming down his long nose.
Sirius's heart tightened, as if he had guessed something.
"Regulus took a pendant box out of his pocket, the same as the Dark Lord's... He told Kreacher to hold it... Wait for the stone basin to dry... and swap the pendant boxes..."
Kreacher's sobs became heavier and heavier.
"He ordered Kreacher to go home... not to tell anyone about this... but he had to find a way to destroy the first pendant box... then he drank... drank all the potion... Kreacher watched... Regulus was dragged underwater... and then..."
"Boom!"
Sirius smashed the glass cabinet next to him, then grabbed Kreacher by the neck, like a raging beast, and roared, "You just watched? Why didn't you save him, you could have brought him back!"
Lupin hurried forward, trying to pull him away, "Calm down, Padfoot, let him finish."
But Sirius's hand was like a hot iron, and Lupin couldn't pry him off.
"Kreacher couldn't... Regulus ordered Kreacher not to move... He ordered Kreacher not to move..."
The elf was sobbing, and even though Sirius was holding his neck, he was still pounding his head hard with his fists.
"Kreacher is useless, Kreacher couldn't destroy the box, couldn't carry out Master's orders!"
...
