Chapter 445: The Pendant Box in the Glass Cabinet
Chapter 445: The Pendant Box in the Glass Cabinet
Several thousand Galleons just flew away, and Kyle felt a sharp pain in his wallet.
But there was no other choice; the Hufflepuff Cup was far more important than this gold.
Just like the Ravenclaw Diadem, the Cup was one of the artifacts left behind by the four founders.
That good-for-nothing Voldemort had turned it into a Horcrux and entrusted it to Bellatrix Lestrange for safekeeping.
However, unlike Lucius Malfoy, Bellatrix did not keep Voldemort's belongings in her home. Instead, she chose to store it in what she believed to be the safer location of Gringotts Wizarding Bank.
Speaking of Horcruxes... aside from the Cup, which was temporarily out of reach, there was another one that was much closer, one could say it was within arm's reach.
This was also the main reason Kyle agreed to accompany Sirius Black to Number 12, Grimmauld Place.
As for the box, it was entirely an unexpected gain. In fact, Kyle never expected that the key to opening the box would turn out to be Sirius Black himself.
He had originally intended to try some regular spells first, and if that didn't work, he would directly use the Blasting Curse or ask for Nicolas Flamel's help the next time they went to Devon.
Thinking of this, Kyle first glanced at Kreacher, who was still tied up on the ground, and casually released him from the binding curse he had cast earlier. Then he turned and asked, "Sirius, can I have a look around here?"
Kreacher, who had been about to leave, suddenly stopped in his tracks upon hearing these words.
"Young Master scum brought back a little demon. Kreacher has never seen such an evil wizard. He blew up the parlor and still isn't satisfied. Now he wants to go blow up other places. Kreacher must protect Mistress's house; no one is allowed to destroy it..."
"Shut up, Kreacher!" Sirius couldn't help but roar. "No one wants to destroy this place. If anyone does, it will be me!"
He then turned to Kyle. "There's nothing interesting to see here, but if you're curious, then of course, go ahead. Just be careful not to wake up those portraits.
Also, it's best not to go to the second basement level or the third floor and above by yourself. Lupin and I haven't checked those places yet, so we're not sure if they're safe."
"Don't touch the locked cabinet in the parlor," Lupin suddenly spoke up. "If I'm not mistaken, there should be a Boggart inside."
He still remembered how extravagant Kyle's method of dealing with the Boggart had been. If that were to happen again, this place might truly be destroyed.
Kyle smiled. The last time had been purely because he hadn't been prepared. Now, a Boggart was nothing to him.
However, he didn't explain this and simply took out his wand, restoring the ruined parlor to its original state.
Sirius and Lupin also helped.
With the three of them working together, the parlor was soon back to normal.
Kreacher finally stopped muttering to himself but still followed closely behind them, keeping a watchful eye on their every move.
"I was just about to ask you," Kyle said to Sirius as they walked down the corridor. "Did you buy a new wand?"
"Oh, this one?" Sirius raised his hand and waved the wand with gold and jewels inlaid in it. "Of course not. I'm still wanted right now. How could I possibly go to Diagon Alley to buy a wand?
This is an old wand I found in the storage cabinet. Although it's very difficult to use, I don't have any other choices right now."
Accompanied by Sirius, Kyle toured the entrance hall and every room on the second floor.
The lighting here was dim, and their shadows were cast on the walls, almost merging with the darkness, making it look like the lair of some evil wizard.
When it was too dark around him, he would subconsciously recall that unpleasant memory.
Hearing his words, Kreacher, who was following behind, started muttering again.
But this time, Sirius couldn't be bothered to pay attention to him. In any case, all these old-fashioned gas lamps would be replaced before Harry moved in, and the rooms had to be brightly lit, with no dark corners.
After turning around, the group arrived at a second-floor parlor.
It was a large room, much bigger than the one they had been in before.
Kyle spotted the cabinet Lupin had mentioned; it was next to an armchair and probably served to store important documents. However, now it was occupied by a Boggart.
Even from a distance, they could see the cabinet gently shaking.
Kyle wasn't interested in the Boggart and merely glanced at it before shifting his attention to a larger glass display cabinet on the opposite wall, which held some strange items.
Kyle walked over.
"If I ever thoroughly clean this place, the first things to go will be the things in here," he declared.
Sirius walked up and said with disgust, "Almost all of them are Dark magic items. They loved this stuff and even put them on display as if they were treasures..."
Kyle examined the glass cabinet. In the center was an open, dusty box containing a Merlin First-Class Medal of Honor. Kyle had one as well, but his ribbon was purple, while this one was green.
The Merlin First-Class Medal of Honor had been awarded to Sirius' grandfather in recognition of his "contribution to the Ministry of Magic."
"Meaning they gave him a lot of gold," Sirius said disdainfully, "Back then, a Dark Wizard was wreaking havoc in the wizarding world, and they needed gold to recruit more Aurors."
"To exchange it for a First-Class Medal of Honor..." Kyle murmured, "That must have been a substantial amount of gold."
"I don't know the exact amount," Sirius said, "But it's said that he traded half of the gold in the vault for it, thinking it would raise the prestige and status of the Black family."
"Half the gold, that's quite extravagant!" Kyle exclaimed, surprised, as he continued to browse.
Next to the box was a silver snuffbox. Kyle poked it with his wand, and it immediately split open, turning into a big mouth that bit at the wand while also spraying a grayish-brown powder.
This powder resembled a prank product by Zonko, sticking to the body and forming an ugly hard shell, but it wasn't harmful, and a simple cleaning spell could get rid of it.
On the left was a particularly ugly-looking silver instrument that resembled a spider with forceps, and it scurried like a spider, too.
As soon as they opened the cabinet door, it tried to escape, but Sirius smashed it with a thick book.
There was also a music box with a painting of a group of twisted shadows on it, which probably wasn't a good thing, either.
There were a bunch of old-fashioned seals, which seemed normal,
and... At that moment, Kyle's heart suddenly skipped a beat.
He had found it—in an inconspicuous corner, there was a golden pendant box.
...
