Chapter 445: ICU
Chapter 445: ICU
Mina reached out and held her hand in front of Gu Wenfeng's nose, then turned to a sobbing Lu Jiaxin and said, "Boss, Brother Feng isn't dead. He must have fainted from the pain."
Lu Jiaxin quickly wiped her tears and asked the police officer who had come with them, "Can you call and ask when the ambulance will arrive?"
Given Gu Wenfeng's current condition, they dared not move him without a doctor. All they could do was hope for the ambulance to arrive soon so he could be taken to the hospital for surgery.
The police officer walked to the side and spoke into his walkie-talkie. He returned a moment later and said to Lu Jiaxin, "Miss Lu, the ambulance will be here in seven minutes."
The ambulance arrived two minutes earlier than expected. As there were three injured people, three ambulances had been dispatched. Wang Lin and Gu Wenfeng were carried onto one, while Zong Jinghua was able to get onto another by himself.
Lu Jiaxin wanted to follow, but Mina stopped her. "Boss, it's better to wait for Mr. Nie. You can go to the hospital together."
Wang Lin was conscious and alert at this point, and he also disagreed with Lu Jiaxin's suggestion. "Boss, you should wait here for Mr. Nie. Don't worry, Brother Feng has been through worse. He won't be defeated by this."
Not wanting to add to his worries, Lu Jiaxin nodded. "Alright, I'll wait for Nie Zhan, and then we'll go to the hospital together. Wang Lin, please take good care of Brother Gu."
"I will."
The ambulances quickly departed.
As the evening cooled, Mina worried that Lu Jiaxin might catch a cold and suggested she wait in the car, but Lu Jiaxin refused. She wanted to leave for the hospital as soon as Nie Zhan arrived, not wasting a second.
Nie Zhan soon arrived, and Lu Jiaxin threw herself into his arms.
Fearing that she was holding him back, Lu Jiaxin had been forcing herself to stay calm, but seeing Nie Zhan, she couldn't hold back her tears any longer.
Nie Zhan, filled with rage and a desire to kill, comforted her. "Jiaxin, it's over now. Everything is fine. I'm here, and no one will hurt you again."
After crying for a while, Lu Jiaxin calmed down, wiped her tears, and said, "Zhan, Brother Gu was hit by so many wooden stakes, and he lost consciousness before the ambulance arrived. Wang Lin is also badly injured. I'm so worried. Can you come with me to the hospital to see them?"
"Of course. Let's go now."
The police stopped Lu Jiaxin, hoping that she would return to the station with them to make a statement.
However, Lu Jiaxin was too concerned about Gu Wenfeng and Wang Lin to think about making a statement. Fortunately, Mina, after consulting with Nie Zhan, agreed to stay and go to the police station later to give her statement. Of course, Lu Jiaxin would also need to give a statement, but only after she had calmed down.
Once they were in the car, Nie Zhan helped Lu Jiaxin wipe her tears and said, "Don't worry. Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital has the best doctors in the city. They will be fine."
Lu Jiaxin felt guilty. "Zhan, it's my fault. If I had bought a bulletproof car earlier, they wouldn't have been so badly injured."
She had already ordered a bulletproof car, but it hadn't arrived yet.
Nie Zhan hugged her and patted her back comfortingly. "It's not your fault. Those people were driven by greed. Don't worry, I will make sure that Gu Wenfeng and Wang Lin get their revenge."
At that moment, Lu Jiaxin's only concern was the well-being of Gu Wenfeng and Wang Lin. As for Zong Jinghua, he had only suffered external injuries and was not in any mortal danger.
Zong Jinghua's injuries were minor—the ambulance doctors had simply cleaned and dressed his wounds. When Lu Jiaxin and Nie Zhan arrived, he was waiting outside the operating room.
Nie Zhan sincerely thanked him and said, "Mr. Zong, I'll have the accountant transfer one million to your account first thing tomorrow morning."
Zong Jinghua had been working as Lu Jiaxin's bodyguard to earn money. This time, he risked his life to fight the kidnappers because Gu Wenfeng, Wang Lin, and the others had fought valiantly, and also because Lu Jiaxin had treated him well over the past two years. Although the ordeal had been perilous, and he had sustained an injury to his hand, the million-dollar reward made it all worthwhile.
Lu Jiaxin took a moment to compose herself and said, "After you're discharged from the hospital, just focus on resting and recovering at home. Take all the time you need before coming back to work."
Zong Jinghua didn't refuse, and he smiled as he replied, "Thank you, Boss."
With a paid extended leave, he could now spend quality time with his daughter. The million-dollar reward would not only clear their debts but also leave them with a substantial surplus. Yes, now that he had the financial means, he could transfer his daughter to a better school.
Wang Lin had been struck by a wooden stake in his arm and leg, and his surgery lasted nearly two hours. Due to the general anesthesia, he remained unconscious even after being wheeled out of the operating room, but the doctor assured them that there was no danger to his life, and he would regain consciousness once the anesthesia wore off.
Nie Zhan asked, "What about the other injured person? Are they out of danger?"
Wang Lin's injuries, though varied, were not life-threatening as none of them had struck a vital area. However, Gu Wenfeng, who had been hit by five wooden stakes, had lost a significant amount of blood. It was only thanks to Lu Jiaxin's quick reaction that he had survived; any longer, and even the most skilled doctor would have been helpless.
The doctor couldn't answer that question as he hadn't been the one performing the surgery. "Mr. Nie, Miss Lu, the surgeon in charge of Mr. Gu's operation is the best in our hospital."
Given the severity of Gu Wenfeng's condition, the hospital had assigned its most skilled doctors to his case.
Waiting was excruciating, and seeing Lu Jiaxin's pale face, Nie Zhan wanted to take her home. But she refused, her voice thick with emotion. "Big Brother Gu was injured while protecting me. How can I leave now when his life hangs in the balance? I'll wait here until his surgery is successful and he wakes up."
Nie Zhan wanted to take her home because he was worried she wouldn't be able to endure the wait, but since she disagreed, he had no choice but to relent. "Alright, I'll stay here and wait with you."
Ah Hu had bought some supper for them, but Lu Jiaxin shook her head. "I can't eat. You all go ahead."
Nie Zhan tried to persuade her. "You always say that people are made of iron and food is made of steel. If you skip a meal, you'll be famished. Come on, eat a little something."
"I'm not hungry," Lu Jiaxin said, her eyes darting towards the operating room light. The light had gone off, indicating that the surgery was over.
Seeing that he couldn't convince her, Nie Zhan had no choice but to let Ah Hu and the others eat the supper.
It was already past three in the morning when the surgery finally ended. It had been a success, and all five bullets had been removed from Gu Wenfeng's body. However, the doctor informed Lu Jiaxin that one of the bullets had been lodged in a tricky position near Gu Wenfeng's left leg, damaging a nerve. Even though the bullet had been extracted, there would be after-effects, and Gu Wenfeng would likely lose the use of his left leg.
Lu Jiaxin's voice was thick with emotion as she asked, "As long as he's alive, that's all that matters. Doctor, when will he wake up?"
The doctor couldn't give a definite answer as it depended on the patient's will to live.
After the doctor left, Nie Zhan said to Lu Jiaxin, "Jiaxin, Big Brother Gu was seriously injured while protecting you. We'll take responsibility for his life from now on.
Lu Jiaxin's mind was consumed with worry, and she replied, "Big Brother Gu is still in the ICU. He's not out of danger yet."
Gu Wenfeng had been rushed into the ICU immediately after his surgery. Some patients emerged from the ICU within a day, but others never left, their eyes forever closed. She was terrified that Gu Wenfeng would be one of the latter, and she didn't know how she would face his family if that happened.
