Chapter 442: Jonin Examination
Chapter 442: Jonin Examination
"What's going on? How is our clan head..." Hinata Qinghe stammered, unable to believe what she was seeing.
The Hyuga clan's strength was greatly diminished without their Byakugan, but Kakashi hadn't used any special techniques either. Their basic taijutsu clash should have favored Hinata Hyuga.
"As expected of a genius who has fought alongside the Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist. Hyuga got too confident this time," thought Mizukami Hazukanu, observing the battle.
The proud leader of the Hyuga clan was being outmaneuvered by a ten-year-old Chunin. It was unbelievable, and if word got out, no one would believe it.
"Use your Gentle Fist and hit Kakashi in the face!" Obito cheered silently for Hinata Hyuga, the clan leader.
He wanted the leader of the Hyuga clan to showcase his true strength and give Kakashi a sound thrashing.
As if hearing Obito's silent cheer, Hinata Hyuga focused chakra in his eyes, and as he activated his Byakugan, the veins around his eyes bulged, and his aura changed.
Once could be a coincidence, but after several exchanges, Hinata Hyuga realized Kakashi was no ordinary shinobi. If he didn't activate his Byakugan, he might be the one to lose his combat ability, not the examinees.
However, to Hinata Hyuga's surprise, even with his Byakugan, his regular taijutsu was still ineffective against Kakashi. Kakashi predicted all his attacks with the precision of a veteran of a thousand battles.
Hinata Hyuga's Byakugan saw through Kakashi's movements as well, resulting in a stalemate.
At this point, Hinata Hyuga had already given Kakashi a perfect score for his taijutsu. Kakashi's performance, even without the Byakugan, surpassed that of Hinata Qinghe, which was truly remarkable.
"Gentle Fist Style: Bagua Sixty-Four Palms!"
After a moment's thought, Hinata Hyuga gathered his chakra and prepared to use the Hyuga clan's secret technique. With his clan watching, he had to regain the face he had just lost.
Gentle Fist was a secret taijutsu passed down in the Hyuga clan for a thousand years and a mandatory skill for all Hyuga ninjas.
However, the branch families only learned the most basic part of Gentle Fist. The main family had access to advanced techniques, and the Bagua Sixty-Four Palms was one of them.
"Lightning Flash!"
Kakashi, sensing that Hinata Hyuga was about to get serious, didn't hesitate. He instantly converted the chakra gathered in his legs into lightning-attribute chakra, energizing his cells and enhancing his body. As Hinata Hyuga swung his palm, Kakashi turned into a lightning bolt and darted out of the attack range of the Bagua Sixty-Four Palms, leaving Hinata Hyuga's attack to hit the air.
"What a fast Lightning Body Flicker!"
Hinata Hyuga suppressed his surprise—he didn't know how many times he had felt this way already—and chased after Kakashi, channeling chakra.
As the distance between them narrowed, the running Kakashi suddenly braked and swiftly drew out his White Fanged Short Sword, turning to slash at the approaching Hinata Hyuga.
Hinata Hyuga's expression didn't change, and he braked just in time to avoid Kakashi's slash. He had seen through Kakashi's attack by observing the changes in his muscle movements.
Zzzz!
A large amount of lightning-attribute chakra flowed from Kakashi's palm into the White Fanged Short Sword, forming a lightning blade.
"Bagua Palm: Heavenly Reversal!"
Hinata Hyuga, sensing the danger, immediately unleashed the Hyuga clan's absolute defense, transforming into a spinning chakra ball that blocked the incoming blade.
Kakashi was unfazed by having his attack blocked again. After all, his opponent was the leader of the Hyuga clan; it would be strange if he could land a blow easily.
"Lightning Release: False Darkness."
Kakashi leaped backward, gathering chakra in his mouth and spitting out a lightning spear that shot toward Hinata Hyuga.
False Darkness required a lot of chakra, and Kakashi rarely used it in actual combat because its cost-effectiveness was lower than that of Lightning Blade.
However, this was a simulated battle, and the purpose was not to win but to pass the exam. So, Kakashi used this advanced lightning jutsu to showcase his skill level in lightning ninjutsu.
"Bagua Empty Wall Palm!"
Facing the menacing lightning spear, Hinata Hyuga immediately unleashed his most powerful taijutsu.
The Bagua Empty Wall Palm was actually a combination taijutsu. When two people simultaneously released the Bagua Empty Palm, it became the Bagua Empty Wall Palm. However, Hinata Hyuga had practiced the Bagua Empty Palm to the point of perfection, and with the powerful chakra in his body, he could perform the Bagua Empty Wall Palm alone.
Whoosh! Whoosh!
Boom!
A terrifying shockwave erupted, flattening the trees around Hinata Hyuga. The powerful gust of wind caused by the impact made the trees in the training field rustle.
Swish!
Without hesitation, Kakashi used the Body Flicker Technique to change his position.
The next moment, the shockwave shattered the lightning spear, creating a crater where Kakashi had been standing.
"I think it would be a bit difficult for me to defeat a Jonin of this level alone. Maito Gai would probably have a chance," Kakashi thought, looking at the destruction caused by Hinata Hyuga's taijutsu.
For Kakashi, Hinata Hyuga was a tricky opponent. The high-purity, highly skilled Byakugan, coupled with the versatile Gentle Fist, made Hinata Hyuga seem flawless.
Kakashi gave up all thoughts of defeating the examiner and ending the fight. Instead, he decided to approach the exam like a regular student, showcasing his abilities to the best of his ability.
In the fifteen minutes that followed, Kakashi displayed his mastery of taijutsu, lightning jutsu, Lightning Blade, earth jutsu, and genjutsu.
"He might even surpass White Fang," Mizukami Hazukanu marveled inwardly.
He was a veteran Jonin who had attained the rank during the Second Great Ninja War.
Mizukami Hazukanu had witnessed White Fang's prowess on the battlefield, and the impact had been so great that he still remembered it to this day.
When Mizukami Hazukanu saw White Fang slaughtering enemy ninja forces with his short blade as if they were vegetables, he understood what a true genius was.
Mizukami Hazukanu had been called a genius himself, but after witnessing White Fang, he believed he was, at best, a talented individual, far from a true genius.
But even White Fang, who had left Mizukami Hazukanu so awestruck, was inferior to the current Kakashi. At least, Mizukami Hazukanu had never heard of White Fang holding his own against an elite Jonin of Konoha at the age of ten.
"Uchiha Obito." The examining Jonin called out the last examinee's name.
Mizukami Hazukanu put aside his thoughts and entered the combat area to begin the examination.
Hinata Hyuga had given him a reminder: never be careless when facing these extraordinary geniuses, or you might end up losing face.
"Finally, it's my turn," Obito said, stretching his body as he entered the field.
Obito was a little anxious at this point. He wanted to finish the exam quickly and return to his books.
With his Sharingan, cheating would be easy, but Obito intended to rely on his own efforts first. Cheating was a last resort.
It stands to reason that defeating the examiner would be a significant bonus. But just in case, Obito wanted to clarify, lest he fail due to theory rather than actual combat; that would truly be infuriating.
"A high score, indeed," Uzuki Yozuru replied with a faint smile.
There had never been a case of an examinee defeating an examiner in the Jonin exam. After all, those qualified to be examiners were not ordinary Jonin; if someone could defeat them, they would likely have already become Jonin themselves.
"Then, be careful, Uncle. My fire style is quite strong," Obito said, offering a friendly warning as he felt Uzuki was quite amiable.
"After all, you are a genius," Uzuki acknowledged without dismissing the concern. Instead, he took it seriously.
"Begin!" the referee Jonin shouted.
"Breathing of Flames, Full Concentration!"
Obito swiftly focused his breathing, then, while retreating, he gathered chakra in his throat and released a Fire Style ninjutsu.
"Fire Style: Fireball Jutsu!"
A massive amount of high-temperature flames erupted from Obito's mouth, swiftly forming a five-meter-tall giant fireball that hurtled towards Uzuki.
Swoosh! Swoosh!!
Immediately after, Obito activated his three-tomoe Sharingan and swiftly threw shuriken to block Uzuki's dodging paths, forcing him to take the brunt of the fireball.
Uzuki, a seasoned veteran Jonin, skillfully blocked some shuriken with his kunai and used the nearby trees to shield himself from the rest. With a few nimble maneuvers, he managed to escape Obito's assault.
"Fire Style: Phoenix Flame Jutsu!"
Leaping onto a tree, Uzuki bounced from branch to branch, spitting out numerous fist-sized fireballs that rained down on Obito.
Attacking from above, the fireballs wove a fiery net around Obito, and even with his Sharingan, he found it impossible to dodge them all.
Realizing this, Obito abandoned the idea of evading and chose to focus on offense instead, his stronger suit.
"Fire Style: Fire Dragon Bomb Jutsu!"
Obito converted a large amount of chakra in his throat into fire-attribute chakra, which he then expelled as scorching flames.
The relentless torrent of flames quickly formed a small sea of fire, which Obito controlled, dividing it into three fire dragons that rose like a fiery wall in front of him, intercepting all the incoming fireballs.
"This control over Fire Style is indeed impressive," Uzuki acknowledged inwardly. It was no easy feat to manipulate such an advanced offensive Fire Style jutsu so skillfully.
"And the power is also extraordinary," Uzuki added as he witnessed the intense heat of the fire dragons.
"However, it's not enough to defeat me," Uzuki declared as he released the large amount of chakra he had gathered.
"Earth Style: Earth Flow Wall!"
A massive, solid wall of earth abruptly rose in front of Uzuki, blocking the flames completely. Though the surface turned charred and blackened, the wall stood firm.
Aside from Fire Style, Uzuki also specialized in Earth Style. In battles, he often used Fire Style for offense and Earth Style for defense.
"Fire Style: Great Fire Annihilation Jutsu!"
Leaping onto the wall of earth, Uzuki performed a series of hand seals and spat out a fire dragon.
This jutsu was familiar to Obito; it was the first Fire Style jutsu he had learned with Mizuki.
"Fire Style: Great Fire Annihilation Jutsu!"
Obito chose to use the same jutsu to test Uzuki's Fire Style prowess.
Using the same nature transformation and jutsu for a head-on collision—if he lost, he would have no excuses; it would simply mean his abilities were lacking.
Boom! Boom!!
The two fire dragons collided, causing a violent explosion, and the dazzling scarlet light faded, leaving behind only charred remains.
"These two truly are the geniuses who joined forces to kill the Octopal Bomb Demon of Mount Watermelon. They're too strong," Sakata Genji exclaimed, unable to contain his awe.
This jutsu showdown almost proved that Obito's Fire Style was on par with Uzuki's.
Although Uzuki was not renowned for his strength, he was, nonetheless, a seasoned Jonin. Sakata felt that Obito's practical exam had already passed at this point, and with such an impressive display, he was sure to score highly.
"Uncle's Fire Style is not weak either, but I still have my ultimate technique," Obito said with a pleased smile after witnessing the fire dragons' mutual destruction.
Uzuki's Fire Style, when compared to his own in the Full Concentration mode, was slightly inferior.
Obito quietly pushed his Breathing of Flames to the limit, entering the Chakra Mode. His chakra continuously depleted, transforming into power that fortified his body.
After entering Chakra Mode, Obito, without any hesitation, charged directly at Uzuki.
Uzuki, observing Obito's reckless approach, felt something was amiss. Given Obito's previous performance, he shouldn't be making such an irrational move.
"Fire Style: Phoenix Flame Jutsu!"
Obito didn't bother with hand seals; the chakra in his throat instantly transformed into flames, which he then expelled.
Swoosh! Swoosh!!
Simultaneously, Obito's hands were also in motion, throwing shuriken at extremely tricky angles.
"No hand seals, and he's using ninjutsu and shuriken at the same time?" Uzuki was astonished.
In his over two decades as a ninja, he had never seen such an unorthodox technique. Aside from not using hand seals, Obito was also able to throw shuriken while executing ninjutsu, which was extremely unusual.
Using ninjutsu required one to concentrate and manipulate the chakra within their body, and Uzuki couldn't fathom how Obito could divide his attention and plan his shuriken throws while in the midst of a ninjutsu.
But Obito wasn't merely throwing shuriken; he was using the Uchiha's unique shuriken-throwing technique, which required a great deal of mental acuity.
Caught off guard, Uzuki was sent into a frenzy, but his extensive experience came to his aid, and he quickly adjusted, sustaining only minor external injuries.
"He's using the Chakra Mode," Kakashi immediately discerned Obito's current state.
If Kakashi had mastered the Lightning Chakra Mode, he wouldn't have used it during the Jonin exam. For if he did, there were only two possible outcomes: either he lost his combat ability before the time limit or he defeated the examiner.
A more conservative display of skill would be a safer bet for passing the exam.
However, their opponents were different. Kakashi believed Obito had a good chance, as Uzuki, though older than Hyuuga Hizashi, was not as strong.
