Chapter 44: Man-Eating Kale
Chapter 44: Man-Eating Kale
The third day of the new school year at Hogwarts was perhaps the most anticipated day for the Hufflepuff first-years, as it was not only Friday but also a day filled with their favorite classes.
In the morning, they attended Professor Sprout's Herbology class, followed by Defense Against the Dark Arts and Flying lessons in the afternoon.
Early in the morning, they joined the Gryffindors outside the Hogwarts Castle to reach the greenhouses.
"Good morning, students. Welcome to Herbology class," said Professor Pomona Sprout, a short witch with flowing gray hair, often covered in dust from tending to her beloved plants in the greenhouses. Despite her impressive title as Headmaster, she appeared more like an unassuming gardener.
However, Professor Sprout herself didn't mind this at all. Standing at the entrance of the greenhouse, she addressed the young wizards seriously, "Before we enter the greenhouse, there are some important things I must tell you.
Firstly, the plants grown here are magical and can be dangerous. Even the seemingly harmless Herbaceous White Hellebore has sharp thorns. So, without my permission, you are not allowed to touch any plant.
Also, once inside the greenhouse, loud noises and screaming are prohibited. We have some new plants that Hogwarts recently acquired, and they are currently adapting to their new environment. Loud sounds might startle them.
Do you understand?"
"Yes, Professor!" the students replied in unison.
"Good," Professor Sprout nodded.
Once inside the greenhouse, she directed everyone to the left side, leaving the right side completely empty.
In truth, even without her instructions, no young wizard would dare venture to that side.
"Professor, what are those weird yellow plants over there?" asked a Gryffindor first-year, his face turning green as he stared at the strange plants with sharp teeth.
Merlin's beard, this was the first time he had ever seen a cabbage with fangs, and its mouth was almost as big as his head. Being bitten by one would undoubtedly be a terrifying experience.
With that thought, he moved further back.
"Man-Eating Kale, it's best to keep your distance from them," Professor Sprout said casually. "But don't be too nervous. They may look scary, but they're good kids. As long as you don't provoke them, there's absolutely no danger.
In a few days, after they've adapted to their new environment, they'll be transferred to a larger greenhouse, and you won't see them again next time."
"Alright," Professor Sprout clapped her hands. "Let's begin the class. Open your books to the first page, and today we'll learn about Herbaceous White Hellebore.
Does anyone know what it is...?"
Ignoring the intimidating Man-Eating Kale, this Herbology class was almost perfect.
Professor Sprout possessed extensive knowledge of Herbology, and her detailed explanations, combined with real-life references, made learning incredibly easy for the young wizards.
By the end of the class, almost everyone could answer her questions flawlessly.
Professor Sprout was delighted and awarded points to each house. She even gave each student a fresh Herbaceous White Hellebore leaf.
This magical world's "Healing Salve" was something Kyle had used before, and it worked wonders. After cleaning and applying it to a wound, it would heal almost completely by the next day.
Of course, this was only effective for minor injuries encountered in daily life. More severe cases required the use of Herbaceous White Hellebore essence.
After class, the group walked out of the greenhouse together.
Michael found Kyle in the crowd and ran to his side, asking curiously, "What did you pick up just now?"
"What did I pick up?" Kyle looked at him in confusion. "I've been weeding the Herbaceous White Hellebore the whole time."
"I saw it," Michael insisted. "When Professor Sprout turned to get the shovel, you ran to the other side and picked up something from under those flower pots."
"Oh, that!" Kyle realized. "It's nothing. I just went to pick up the fertilizer packet that Professor Sprout dropped."
"Fertilizer packet?" Michael looked at Kyle skeptically, clearly not believing his words.
It was a small and lightweight bag, and it wasn't even round. No matter how he thought about it, it was impossible for it to have fallen that far.
"Well, maybe I accidentally kicked it over there," Kyle said, looking a bit scared. "I was so frightened when I noticed it. Those Man-Eating Kales are really scary. Honestly, if it weren't for the fear of Professor Sprout deducting points, I wouldn't have gone to pick it up."
"Is that so?"
Seeing that Kyle's story was consistent, Michael gradually dismissed his doubts and nodded. "Those Man-Eating Kales do look quite terrifying. If it were me, I definitely wouldn't dare to go over there."
"That's true," Kyle agreed, spreading his hands. "By the way, did Professor Sprout say when she would teach you to control your magic power?"
"Yeah, Professor Sprout asked me to find her on Saturday and Sunday mornings."
Michael sounded a bit dejected. "This is the first weekend at Hogwarts, and I still have to attend classes..."
"There's no other way," Kyle patted his shoulder and consoled him. "You can't keep drinking Mana Suppressant Potion forever."

Hearing the words 'Mana Suppressant Potion', Michael shuddered involuntarily and shook his head repeatedly. "You're right. I'd rather not have any weekends in the future than drink that stuff again."
"Yeah."
After returning to the castle, Kyle asked Michael and Ryan to go back to their dormitory first. He then made an excuse to go to the library and headed straight to the eighth floor, where he found the tapestry of Silly Napa being beaten by trolls.
Silly Napa was a wizard who tried to teach trolls to dance ballet but ended up getting beaten by six trolls.
Based on the content of the tapestry, he must have been beaten pretty badly.
After confirming the location, Kyle walked back and forth near the tapestry three times while silently reciting something in his mind.
"I need a greenhouse for planting."
When Kyle passed by the tapestry for the third time, a circular archway appeared on the opposite wall.
Without hesitation, Kyle grabbed the brass handle, opened the door, and walked in.
A unique fragrance of soil filled the air instantly.
Although he had expected it, the scene before him still left Kyle stunned.
This room was almost as big as the Great Hall, with fertile soil underfoot and even sunlight visible overhead.
It was probably some kind of spell.
Kyle tentatively said, "I need rain."
The next second, the originally sunny room suddenly experienced a torrential downpour. These raindrops seemed to have a mind of their own, only falling on the soil, and not a single hair on Kyle's head got wet.
"This is amazing," Kyle exclaimed sincerely.
This is what you call a Wish Fulfillment Room!
Using this place as a second-hand storage room or something would be a waste.
