Chapter 44: Investigating with the CEO
Chapter 44: Investigating with the CEO
You Xuan quietly observed the duel, stroking his chin in thought.
This was a duel by Seto Kaiba, the current King of Games, eight years after the events of Duel Monsters. It represented the pinnacle of dueling in the modern card world.
In the GX anime, Kaiba, the CEO, never dueled directly, except for that one time with Jaden and 'Justice Man'. But that seemed more like a card spirit modeled after himself, and Jaden had lost that duel, so it was hard to tell if Kaiba had gone easy on him.
Judging by this duel alone, it was no wonder that Kaiba was regarded as the number one duelist in the world. Even without his unique skill of 'drawing the card he needs from the bottom of the deck', his Blue-Eyes deck was already ahead of its time and far superior in strength compared to others.
Even the side characters in GX were still in the phase of adjusting to the new environment at the beginning of the story, and they were only at the stage of being able to summon a 2000 ATK beater during their first turn. In the early episodes, Jaden's duels often ended without him even summoning a monster. And these duelists from the academy were already considered top-notch in the larger dueling world.
In comparison, Kaiba was on a whole other level.
Indeed, having wealth and skill was advantageous. By conducting his own research and printing his own cards, it was only natural that his deck was at the forefront of the times, or perhaps it should be said that if someone like Kaiba, with his near-infinite resources, was still on the same level as other duelists after so many years, that would be unreasonable.
"I won, as expected of my brother, but it's not really surprising." Keihei wiped his nose with a smile and approached Kaiba.
Only after satisfying his dueling itch did Kaiba turn to look at You Xuan.
"You're Fujiki You Xuan, right?"
He narrowed his eyes.
"I have something to say to you, but first, I need to deal with a rat problem."
You Xuan raised his eyebrows.
He wants to talk to me?
Hmm, could he be challenging me to a duel?
Considering it was Kaiba, that was a real possibility. Maybe he saw how I beat his AI in the theme park and wanted a rematch, or perhaps he just wanted to duel again.
You Xuan thought about it; if it was just a friendly duel with no stakes, then why not? If he lost, there wouldn't be any real consequences. He could even consider charging a fee for his time; one rare card for a duel. If he won, he might even be able to achieve rare card freedom.
At that moment, the helicopter landed, and Kaiba's entourage stepped out. They carried the unconscious Fujimoto, who had been knocked out by the Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon's breath attack.
Fujimoto forced his eyes open, adjusting to the harsh sunlight. He blinked in confusion.
"Huh? I'm still alive?"
"Your life isn't worth anything to me," Kaiba said coldly, his arms crossed. "Compared to your worthless life, there's something else I want from you."
Apparently, his new dueling disk could not only give substantial weight to the holographic duel monsters but also adjust their energy output. He had limited the output to a non-lethal level, sparing Fujimoto's life.
"I know you have a base," Kaiba said coldly. "Tell me its location."
Fujimoto had also regained his senses by now. He gritted his teeth and scoffed, "Hmph, so that's your goal. You want me to betray the organization? Puh-lease!
Everyone in the organization is like family to me, my brothers and sisters. We're as close as kin."
As he spoke, he caught a glimpse of Kaiba's cold, eerie smile from the corner of his eye.
Upon further thought, he realized that his best buddy in the organization was actually only Ghost Kaiba. Now that Ghost Kaiba was gone, his relationship with the rest of them was rather distant.
With this realization, Fujimoto felt slightly more at ease.
When people are reduced to being fish on a chopping block, one can't blame them for selling out their teammates. It was truly unavoidable in the face of Pegasus' cheating and unfair advantage. Surely his teammates would understand.
"I can tell you the address," he said.
"No need." Pegasus waved his hand dismissively. "Lead the way."
Fujimoto: "!"
With this stance, was he expected to personally guide him there? Fujimoto started sweating again. Leaking information was one thing, but personally guiding them to the door was another matter entirely.
"What's the matter?" Pegasus narrowed his eyes. "Do you have an opinion?"
"No, no," Fujimoto quickly replied.
He struggled to his feet, his battle-hardened legs trembling uncontrollably.
"I'm coming with you!"
Keihei followed his brother and exclaimed in surprise, then turned to You Xuan. "Sorry, it looks like it'll take a bit longer before I can take you to the company. Do you want to wait a bit longer, or should I have the driver send you to the branch office first?"
"It's fine, I'm not in a hurry," You Xuan waved his hand.
He certainly wasn't going to miss this rare opportunity to be at the front row of the spectacle. Especially now that he had just realized that Fujimoto had approached Ryuzaki due to some unknown misunderstanding, and his actual target seemed to be himself.
Speaking of Ryuzaki, that guy was fast; he had disappeared without a trace after the CEO had blinked.
Although the organization didn't seem to be aware that the brothers had actually been killed by someone else, they were still a potential threat. Now that Pegasus intended to pay them a visit, it would be an opportunity to eliminate this bunch of people and remove a hidden danger.
Thus, You Xuan and Keihei continued to chat casually as they followed Pegasus to the organization's base to investigate.
After a journey of about ten minutes...
They arrived at the hidden alley and the mysterious bar once again.
Fujimoto's face was as white as a sheet as he entered the bar, sitting at the counter with a lifeless expression.
The man with a center-parted hairstyle sat next to him, observing his pale face. "What's wrong? You look like someone from your family just died."
Fujimoto turned his expressionless face towards the man, the one he considered family.
"Not yet, but it should be soon."
Center Part: "?"
"Didn't you go to seek revenge from Ryuzaki? What happened?"
Fujimoto shook his head, his expression still dazed.
"I ran into Pegasus."
The brothers beside him were all startled and gathered around.
"Wow, that's awesome! Did you duel?"
"Is he really as strong as they say?"
Fujimoto shook his head again.
"You'll know soon enough."
He said woodenly.
"He's waiting for you guys outside."
Everyone: "?"
The next moment, they heard a loud bang as the door was violently kicked open from the outside.
Pegasus strode into the bar amidst the shocked gazes of the crowd, and the duel disk unfolded with a flourish.
"Come on, you rats. Let's duel!"
