Chapter 436: Mission
Chapter 436: Mission
"You're not seriously telling me Xiao Tan is essentially a demon or something like that, are you?" Feng Bu Jue asked.
"Hehehe... Excellent! See how your mind opens up once you accept supernatural elements", Wooly chuckled. "But you're guessing wrong."
"Then is it dissociative identity disorder?" Feng Bu Jue followed up.
"Nonsense..." Wooly scoffed. "Let's say it's a soul's self-preservation mechanism—a kind of power he can't fully control yet."
"Oh... So does this mechanism cause memory loss?" Feng Bu Jue asked again.
"Absolutely not", Wooly replied.
"Hmm... That's strange then", Feng Bu Jue mused, furrowing his brow. "I remember... The day after that incident happened, Xiao Tan's family took a week off work and left S City. Just when I thought they were planning to flee the country permanently... A week later, Xiao Tan returned to school like nothing ever happened." He paused briefly. "I tested him several times afterward... He clearly had no memory of what happened in that alley. I even talked to his parents—they just said Xiao Tan had forgotten everything and told me to drop it."
"Hehe... They weren't wrong", Wooly responded. "Because Wang Tan Zhi's memories of that incident have indeed been isolated."
"Huh?" Feng Bu Jue blinked in sudden realization. "Wait—are you telling me he was taken overseas for brainwashing?"
"No such thing", Wooly said. "Wang Tan Zhi's parents were just concerned about their son, so they took him to Dubai to let his grandfather help sort things out."
"His grandfather is some kind of magic user?" Feng Bu Jue asked.
"Hahahah... You're so close, yet so far!" Wooly burst into laughter like this was the funniest joke. "Hahahah... He used to be... Hahahah!" He laughed harder, even slapping his own thighs.
"Ugh... Everyone here claims to be a genius, yet acts like an idiot half the time..." Assass sighed from the sofa, glancing at his superior.
"Ah... Sorry... Hehehe..." Wooly finally stopped laughing after a long moment. "I just remembered something really funny."
"Let me summarize", Feng Bu Jue said. "My childhood best friend, this rich, handsome guy with a promising career... Turns out he's hiding some incredible supernatural force inside him, and his family has always known about it. They've just never taken it seriously. Since his grandfather's generation, this has been a common occurrence."
"Exactly", Wooly confirmed.
Feng Bu Jue took a deep breath. "Well... I suppose some questions that've been haunting me for years finally make sense now."
"Hehehe..." Wooly grinned. "You mean that murder coverup?" He shrugged. "I handled that part. Naturally, it was flawless."
"You did it?" Feng Bu Jue pondered for a few seconds. "No wonder the media never covered the case back then. I kept wondering—four deaths, how could there be..."
"Hehe... Not me, then who else?" Wooly chuckled. "Oh, and are you sure only four people died that night?"
At these words, Feng Bu Jue felt a cold chill run through him. His eyes darkened. "So you took care of the witness too..."
"Precisely", Wooly said. "The case was officially closed as a gang fight involving four thugs, accidentally killing bystanders—five dead in total."
"Did you manipulate the police too...?" Feng Bu Jue asked. "And... how did the victims' families accept that outcome?"
"I'm the devil, remember? I have my ways", Wooly grinned. "Hehehe... Besides, my methods are far more effective than what you've done."
"Hmph..." Feng Bu Jue merely grunted coldly without replying. He knew he'd done similar things back then.
...
That night in the alley, Feng Bu Jue's arrival restored Xiao Tan's sanity, but the latter immediately fainted.
This left Feng Bu Jue alone to deal with the mess.
Feng Bu Jue first calmly assessed the situation. Then he checked the pulses of the four thugs—confirming all were deceased. He shoved the bodies aside and approached the chubby witness cowering in the alley corner to question him.
With a mix of intimidation, deception, and several hard slaps across the face, Feng Bu Jue extracted the full story from the traumatized witness.
Then came the critical decision...
Reporting to the police was the "right" choice—hand everything over to law enforcement and wash his hands clean. As countless celebrated detectives had said: "Our duty is to uncover truth—we have no right to decide life or death."
But Feng Bu Jue chose differently... He intimidated the witness.
Using his sharp reasoning skills, he accurately deduced the witness's school, grade level, and even his residential neighborhood. Then in a cold, menacing voice, he threatened death and violence.
"You hated them too, didn't you? You wanted them dead. Would anyone really believe your story? What if my friend and I both testified you were the killer? That would seem more credible, wouldn't it?" After intimidation came manipulation. Only this way could he force compliance. Only this way could he make the witness believe obeying was his only survival path.
Soon, Feng Bu Jue forced the witness to memorize a fabricated statement—"four thugs killing each other in an internal conflict." Once certain the witness wouldn't go to the police, he let him flee.
Then he began cleaning the crime scene... He wiped every blood-stained palm print from the iron rod, replacing them with the deceased's fingerprints. He removed the leather jacket from one corpse, carefully cleaning the collar, sleeves, and hem before pressing the victims' fingerprints onto it. He meticulously erased every footprint and palm print left by both himself and Xiao Tan. He even altered the corpses further, worsening fractures to confuse autopsy results...
When Feng Bu Jue committed to a task, his execution and planning were exceptional. He completed this entire cleanup in just five minutes.
Finally, he removed his own school uniform and wrapped it over Xiao Tan's outer clothing. Slung over his back, he carried Xiao Tan out of the alley with one hand while holding both their backpacks.
To avoid surveillance cameras, he deliberately detoured through two extra alleys and a residential complex. Then Feng Bu Jue hailed a taxi to return Xiao Tan home.
Despite the distance being short, his school uniform effectively concealed Xiao Tan's bloodstained clothes. The driver didn't suspect anything.
Within ten minutes, they arrived at Xiao Tan's house—a private, high-end community with a standalone mansion. Feng Bu Jue had visited before. Using the intercom, he called Xiao Tan's parents down—for two reasons. First, to pay the taxi fare (Feng Bu Jue's allowance back then was truly meager). Second, to get help carrying Xiao Tan inside...
...
"What you did could certainly disrupt police investigations temporarily, but it wasn't nearly enough", Wooly remarked.
"I know that better than anyone", Feng Bu Jue admitted. "Even if I consciously avoided street cameras when leaving the alley, I couldn't guarantee there weren't prior recordings of them entering. Remember, I was still a junior high student then. Though I could devise plans to infiltrate local police stations and destroy video files, execution would've been nearly impossible." He spread his hands helplessly. "Of course, my biggest concern was the witness. His confession was only a matter of time."
"So in the end, everything you did was just buying time for the investigation", Wooly added. "Hehe... But that's all you needed. You knew Wang Tan Zhi's family had certain connections—given time, they could handle things through both legal and... less legal means."
"Actually, I had already prepared for police to show up at my door any day for questioning", Feng Bu Jue said. "I watched the news every day back then, yet there wasn't a single report. Initially, I assumed Xiao Tan's family had intervened, but considering the case's scale, that seemed impossible. Not until today did I learn the truth."
“You have a question?” Wooly adjusted his glasses, casting Feng Bu Jue an eerie glance. “If you had enough power to do Perfect Calibration like me… would you kill a witness to clear your Friend of blame?”
“Impossible,” Feng Bu Jue shot back instantly. “The reason I helped Xiao Tan cover up the evidence is because I trust him—I believe his actions were Justifiable Defense.” His expression turned solemn. “But killing someone to silence them? That involves taking another life. That witness has no grudge against me, no connection to me at all—”
“We can tell when you’re lying,” Assass interrupted Feng Bu Jue’s nonsense.
“Tch… Why didn’t you say so earlier?” Feng Bu Jue’s tone immediately grew lazy. “If we’re deciding to act, of course we’d do it thoroughly—no leaks, no roots left.”
“Beautifully said,” Wooly praised. “You’re definitely that type of person.”
“Oh? And what type am I?” Feng Bu Jue smirked.
“The kind who secretly treats morality and law as trash, always applying your own unique principles to everything,” Wooly replied darkly. “People like you… must be restrained by strict laws and systems. People like you… if you gain power that defies common sense, the consequences would be unimaginable.”
“Hmph… Aren’t those last two statements true for most humans?” Feng Bu Jue countered. “Everyone wants to act recklessly, right?” He tilted his head. “And as for the first part… why not just say I have antisocial tendencies?”
“Hehehe… Perfect. Conversations between villains should be blunt,” Wooly chuckled.
“Then let me ask you a few questions directly,” Feng Bu Jue said. “First… is Xiao Tan safe right now?”
“His affairs aren’t your concern,” Wooly said, pointing at the wall clock. “Since he refused to answer calls, Gu Xiaoling drove to his house two minutes ago.” He sneered again. “Hehehe… She can handle small affairs like this.”
“Huh?” Feng Bu Jue frowned. “Does that mean Gu Xiaoling is also—?”
“Hehehe… Don’t worry, she’s human,” Wooly replied. “And not under my jurisdiction.”
“Hmm…” Feng Bu Jue mused. “Say… how many abnormal humans do I actually know?”
“Classified,” Wooly said.
“Heh…” Feng Bu Jue snorted. “Then tell me this—” He raised his hand, tapping his temple with two fingers. “What did you do to my mind?”
“Hehe… Isn’t it obvious? I sealed your fear,” Wooly answered.
“Why?”
“Ahhh… Why indeed… Hehehe…” Wooly repeated the question, laughing again.
“Are you dodging that too?” Feng Bu Jue pressed.
Wooly shrugged. “Not yet time to tell.” He paused, as if recalling something. “Oh, but rest assured—it’s not a physical incurable disease. You’re not in mortal danger… for now.”
“Haha…” Feng Bu Jue let out a dry laugh, his face sour. “Such a heartwarming update.”
“Hehehe… Perhaps this will cheer you slightly,” Wooly continued. “You’re not the only one who’s been sealed.”
“Oh? Who else?” Feng Bu Jue asked coldly.
Wooly smirked, uttering the name: “Li Ruoyu.”(End of Chapter)
