Chapter 43: Injured
Chapter 43: Injured
Jiang Xia no longer paid attention to what the protagonist was doing. Instead, she continued to search the rocky shore for anything she could find. Whenever she encountered a stone she could move, she would shift it, but she didn’t discover anything of note.
Zhou Chenglei followed her, carrying a bucket.
Jiang Xia shooed him away, "Why are you following me? We should split up and search! We need to finish quickly and get home; it’s almost dark. See if you can find any more crabs; it would be great to have a few more."
"Crabs are cold-natured; eating too many isn’t good for you." Zhou Chenglei was following her to prevent her from falling, but when she complained, he reluctantly moved away to look for the crabs she liked.
Jiang Xia carefully moved forward, picking up small mussels, oysters, and other shellfish she encountered. Even a tiny bit of food was better than nothing, and her motto was to never leave anything edible behind.
Not far ahead, she found a blue-green fish, a type of squid, which was already dead. She checked its gills, which were still bright red, indicating it was fresh. She picked it up and placed it in the bucket.
As she continued to walk, the rocky area was coming to an end, and a sandy beach stretched out ahead, with many people around.
Jiang Xia thought there wouldn’t be much more to find, but then she noticed a small pool of water with a red shell partially exposed among the rocks.
From the look of the shell, Jiang Xia guessed it was a shrimp.
Her heart raced with excitement!
Jiang Xia set the bucket aside and crouched down. Realizing her arms weren’t long enough, she decided to lie flat on the rocks, waiting for the right moment.
Zhou Chenglei occasionally glanced over at Jiang Xia. When he saw her butt sticking up as she lay on the rocks, he was speechless.
Not knowing what she had found, Zhou Chenglei walked over to her.
After lying down, the shell gradually revealed more of itself. When half of it was exposed, Jiang Xia quickly reached out and grabbed it by the body, lifting it up!
It was a red shrimp, a type of fiddler shrimp!
Zhou Chenglei raised an eyebrow.
Jiang Xia turned to look at him, grinning widely, "I caught a fiddler shrimp!"
Zhou Chenglei walked closer, hearing the excitement in her voice, and took a look. "It’s a mantis shrimp. They’re delicious."
The meat of the mantis shrimp was firm and tender, with a rich and flavorful taste, similar to lobster but even more delicate.
"Expensive, right?"
"Yes." This type of shrimp wasn’t easy to catch, and since he thought Jiang Xia had probably never tasted it, he said, "We’ve caught so many shrimp today. You should keep this big one to try."
"Sure."
Money could always be earned, but it was important to enjoy life when you could.
Zhou Chenglei placed the bucket in front of her, "Put it in the bucket."
Zhou Chenglei wasn’t one to pick up everything. Jiang Xia noticed that his bucket contained a sea bass, a sea eel, and a few live crabs, while the fish were all dead.
The sea eel looked a bit like a snake, making Jiang Xia’s heart skip a beat as she quickly placed the shrimp in the bucket.
Zhou Chenglei picked up the bucket from the ground, "Let’s go!"
"Okay." Jiang Xia responded, but she couldn’t help glancing around the area.
As she looked, she saw a flash of white in the waves crashing against the rocks.
Jiang Xia immediately said, "There’s something over there!"
She started walking over quickly.
"Don’t go too close, the waves are big!" Zhou Chenglei shouted, hurrying to follow her.
"I won’t get too close," Jiang Xia replied, but as she moved a bit closer, a wave crashed down, filling her water shoes.
However, Jiang Xia saw a long, flat fish writhing in the crevice of the rocks, almost dead. Its belly was slightly swollen, suggesting it had just been washed up.
"It’s a ribbonfish."
Ribbonfish have sharp teeth, but fortunately, it looked almost dead and probably had no strength left.
"I’ll get it. You stay back," Zhou Chenglei jumped down, grabbing the fish’s head with one hand and its body with the other.
The moment he grabbed it, the ribbonfish struggled and splashed water all over Jiang Xia's face.
Jiang Xia, who had already opened the burlap bag, was ready for it.
Zhou Chenglei pierced the ribbonfish's belly and tossed it into the bag.
This ribbonfish was large and long, probably weighing over ten pounds.
Discovering another ribbonfish, Zhou Chenglei and Jiang Xia explored the surrounding rocks but found nothing else of value before they decided to leave.
Zhou Chenglei carried the two buckets and the ribbonfish, not letting Jiang Xia carry anything. She held only a pair of pliers and a small shovel.
They started walking back.
Jiang Xia, still hopeful, kept looking around as they walked.
Suddenly, a distant cry caught their attention: "Someone's been swept away by the waves!"
Jiang Xia was startled and looked over, seeing a white figure bobbing up and down in the waves.
The main character was wearing a white dress.
Zhou Chenglei quickly dropped what he was carrying and ran over.
Jiang Xia followed, but her foot slipped on the rocks, and she fell, hitting her knee hard.
A sharp pain shot through her knee!
Her pants were rolled up, and she could see blood trickling from the wound.
Jiang Xia tried to get up but winced in pain. "Ouch!"
Zhou Chenglei, sensing something, turned back and saw her. He glanced at the beach, where several people were rushing to help.
They were all excellent swimmers.
Zhou Chenglei turned back to Jiang Xia, noting that her knee and ankle were bleeding profusely.
He frowned. "Let me check if you've twisted anything."
Gently holding her ankle and calf, he moved them slightly.
No joints were sprained.
Zhou Chenglei relaxed a bit and glanced back at the beach.
Jiang Xia looked as well.
A large wave crashed in, pushing the white figure back onto the sand.
Several people rushed forward and quickly pulled the person to safety.
Everything was fine.
Zhou Chenglei, relieved, turned his attention back to Jiang Xia. "I'll carry you back."
Jiang Xia shook her head and stood up. "It's just a scrape. I can walk. You carry the things."
To her, this was a minor injury. In the past, while rushing to work, she had fallen off her electric scooter and scraped her arm and leg, but she had gotten up and continued to her job.
Zhou Chenglei watched her knee bleed as she walked nonchalantly, and his heart ached.
He picked up the two buckets and the burlap bag, then without a word, scooped Jiang Xia into his arms and started walking.
Jiang Xia, startled, clung to his neck, her face turning red. "What are you doing? I can walk, put me down."
"Stay still," Zhou Chenglei said, carrying her toward the shore.
Jiang Xia stopped moving and looked around.
The beach was crowded, but fortunately, everyone was focused on the rescue, so no one was paying attention to them.
In the distance, Wen Wan, the main character, was dragged to the sand, still shaken.
She glanced at the people who had saved her, none of whom were Zhou Chenglei.
She looked around for him and saw him carrying two buckets in one hand and Jiang Xia in the other, walking toward the shore.
Wen Wan: "..."
He actually didn't help?
