Chapter 43: Allies
Chapter 43: Allies
Luo En pondered for a moment before rising from his chair to pat Andie’s shoulder.
“Don’t look so down. I’ve never seen the mighty Thirteenth Prince like this before.”
He strode toward his cabinet, rummaging through it while teasing, “If the young ladies in the capital saw your gloomy face now, they’d be heartbroken.”
Andie, who had been sulking, let out a reluctant chuckle. “Forget those boring social events. They’re all fake flattery anyway.” He shook his head, the shadow in his eyes lightening slightly.
“Check this out,” Luo En said, pulling a delicate crystal bottle from the depths of his cabinet. Inside shimmered a crimson liquid that glowed faintly. He tossed it casually toward Andie.
Andie caught it just in time, nearly dropping it. “Hey! Be careful! This isn’t a marble game.” He held the bottle up to the light, curiosity sparking in his eyes. “What’s this? Smells a bit like… strong liquor?”
“Hah! If liquor sold for five Mana Shard Fragments a bottle, I’d open a tavern already.” Luo En grinned, his teeth flashing. “This is a ‘Blood Potion’ I brewed under Madame Ellen’s guidance yesterday. Specifically for knight cultivation.”
Andie’s eyes lit up instantly. “You’re serious? I’ve heard of these potions—they’re impossible to find in the markets!”
He examined the crimson liquid closely. “Wait… you can actually make potions of this caliber now? Your progress is insane! From a Sixth Class Star-qualified apprentice to this… you’re practically a different person.”
“Come on, you don’t really think I’m some monster, do you?” Luo En replied, pulling out several small bottles of different colors from the cabinet and tossing them onto the table. “Take a look—these are my recent masterpieces. The blue one stabilizes spirit waves, the green one relieves meridian pain…”
He picked up a transparent vial and swirled its contents. “And this little gem? Super effective for breathing technique cultivation—at least a 30% efficiency boost.”
Andie reached out to grab one, but Luo En swatted his hand away. “Don’t touch! These are my treasures. Each bottle costs nearly ten Mana Shard Fragments.”
“You weren’t this stingy before,” Andie fake-complained, though his eyes sparkled with anticipation. “It’s really that good?”
“Want to test it?” Luo En raised an eyebrow. “You can take one back later. Guaranteed to make your breathing technique advance in leaps and bounds.”
Andie blinked, then eyed him cautiously. “What’s the catch? Don’t get me wrong, I know we’re close, but I’m not selling my ass.”
“Screw you, I’ve got no interest in that sick fetish,” Luo En snorted, throwing a playful punch that nearly knocked Andie sideways. “You palace-born brats sure are paranoid, though.”
He gathered the bottles neatly, his expression suddenly turning serious. “Actually, Andie… Madame Ellen promised to teach me a gem-grade meditation technique after my breakthrough.”
Andie’s smile froze. “Did you say… a gem-grade meditation technique?” His voice wavered as disbelief overtook him. “Good heavens! She actually has one? Aren’t those the core secrets the School guards with their lives?”
“The condition is helping her gather some rare materials,” Luo En shrugged. “Frankly, the list is no joke to collect. But this opportunity’s too rare—I’m taking it.”
“You know what, Luo En?” Andie shook his head, his tone half-wistful. “I regret underestimating you as just another spoiled noble back then. If I’d known your potential…”
“Don’t dwell on it,” Luo En waved him off, recalling their shared past. “Back then, I really was a bastard—drinking all day and sleeping around.”
Both men laughed, the tension in the room easing.
“On a serious note,” Andie sobered, fixing Luo En with a steady gaze, “if you can truly help me overcome this crisis, I’ll be your guardian knight.”
Luo En, sipping tea, raised a curious eyebrow. “You serious?”
“Never more so,” Andie replied, his eyes burning with conviction. “I’d rather follow a trusted friend than be that madwoman’s plaything.”
He gave a bitter smile. “Besides, the royal family already sees me as a failure. But my knight cultivation talent isn’t bad. With you… at least I can keep what’s left of my dignity, right?”
Luo En set down his teacup, his expression turning solemn. “Then I won’t hold back—consider yourself officially commissioned. But here’s a tip: focus on advancing your knight strength.”
“What do you mean?”
“Think about it,” he said, tapping the table. “If you break through to become a full knight, your standing in the royal family changes completely. Even your siblings would have to treat you with respect, wouldn’t they?”
Andie’s eyes brightened as if struck by lightning. “You’re quick! True, full knights have independent status in the kingdom. Even the royal family can’t just order us around.”
“Exactly,” Luo En grinned smugly. “I supply the potions, you handle cultivation—we both win.”
“Wait…” Andie eyed him suspiciously. “What do you mean by ‘supply potions’? These things are expensive as hell.”
“You get the materials, I’ll brew them at cost,” Luo En winked, jingling the Mana Shard pouch at his waist. “Friendship rate—slightly cheaper than the market.”
“You bastard!” Andie laughed, shaking his head. “You’ve become one hell of a businessman. But…”
His face turned serious. “I accept this deal. I’ll gather intelligence and resources for you. When you need a fighter or a courier, I’ll be there. You help me grow stronger. Fair and square.”
“Then it’s settled!” Luo En extended his hand.
Andie clasped it firmly, and the two exchanged grins. “Deal!”
“Oh, by the way,” Luo En suddenly remembered, “that Xin Xi Ya you mentioned—does she wear purple dresses and speak with a Southern accent?”
“You know her?” Andie asked, surprised.
“Not personally,” Luo En said with a cryptic smile. “But I’ve heard her name from Madame Ellen. Seems she recently messed up a potion’s formula and nearly poisoned herself.”
Andie’s eyes widened. “Seriously?”
“Absolutely,” Luo En shrugged. “Madame Ellen muttered something about ‘big boobs, empty head’ while complaining.”
