Chapter 426: Shackles of Faith, the Time of Divine Descent
Chapter 426: Shackles of Faith, the Time of Divine Descent
"Potter, I’m wondering if the Great Black Abyss Emperor truly exists."
Sam's expression was very calm. He had become the Grand Patriarch, the leader of all the Desecrating Priests. His twisted wisdom made him incomprehensible by normal standards. He had long transformed from an ignorant and foolish common peasant into a madman with a wealth of insane knowledge.
Upon hearing Sam's words, Potter's expression changed. Even though everyone was mad, they all knew where their power came from.
"Are you doubting our Lord?" The holy light surged around Potter, his expression demanding an answer from Sam. If not, even as the Grand Patriarch, Sam would not escape punishment.
This holy light was naturally plundered from the God of Holy Light, as well as the God of Fertility, the God of Wealth, and other deities. They had not only stolen their divine powers and abilities but now masqueraded as priests and believers of the God of Holy Light, making the use of holy light more reasonable.
"He has never responded to us. We only receive cold texts and occasional updates to the exchange list, like the divine power weapons from before. So, is the Great Black Abyss Emperor merely a tool from the very beginning?" Sam completely ignored Potter's anger and continued.
"In the name of the Abyssal Will, you are too mad. I fear your sanity has been eroded by the gods. I will now announce the revocation of your position until you either restore your faith in the Black Abyss Emperor or die here." Potter said coldly. His faith was fervent, at the level of a zealot.
"No, you can't, because I am the leader of the Desecrating Priests, not you." Sam shook his head and said.
"You lost that position the moment you disrespected the Black Abyss Emperor." Potter said, turned, and left.
But he had not taken two steps when he suddenly felt a sharp pain in his chest. A thick vine had pierced through his heart.
"I have awakened from madness, and the distortion has been thoroughly suppressed. This world does not need gods, my friend." Sam crushed Potter's heart.
But Potter did not die. Instead, he looked at Sam in disbelief. "You dare to betray the Black Abyss Emperor!!!"
"Betray? Yes, I have betrayed His Majesty, but it is for the sake of all our fellow beings, all those ruled by the gods."
"The responsibility in my blood has made me realize one thing: the gods are nothing more than parasites."
As Sam spoke, his brow twitched, and a bone-cracking sound echoed as a bloody eyeball emerged from his forehead.
"Compared to my madness and distortion, this world is truly twisted and mad." Sam looked out the window and whispered.
"Faith is just a tool."
The bloody eyeball rotated, and a flood of knowledge from deep within his blood began to resurface, causing his mind to ache intensely, as if in a nightmare.
But Sam seemed oblivious, calmly stroking a divine power weapon. "Survival and proliferation must endure!"
In the Holy Light Kingdom, a colossal deity sat on a throne, draped in luxurious garments, surrounded by a radiant glow that obscured his face.
"Someone has broken free from the shackles of faith."
"And has successfully awakened ancient bloodlines."
The deity spoke in a low voice, so quiet that even the attendants around him did not hear.
"Stealing the divine power bestowed by the God of Holy Light? Truly formidable techniques, even beyond the reach of tracking. Are these remnants from the ancient era?"
"But weren't all research laboratories and bases destroyed in the Cradle Plan? How could there be any remnants?"
As the shadow within the deity whispered, the holy light began to tremble. All the divine guards and attendants looked on in horror, unsure why the God of Holy Light, who sat on the throne overseeing all, would suddenly change.
"Eliminate the heretics."
These four words exploded in the minds of all beings in the divine kingdom.
Immediately, a fanatical fervor erupted. The divine guards and attendants, who had prepared for this moment for years, were ready to act.
They would descend as divine avatars into the material plane and take control of the bodies of their faithful priests to effectively combat the heretics.
But soon, an awkward situation arose.
The divine descent required faith, and most of the chosen candidates were mid-to-high-level priests from the Holy Light Church. However, out of ten thousand priests, only one met the criteria. This caused them to panic, as these priests were the backbone of the Holy Light Church. The number of fanatics was extremely low, and some were only nominal believers, yet they held high positions, which was quite unbelievable.
The colossal deity hidden in the shadows beneath the radiant light was somewhat surprised, but he quickly recovered, as this was part of the plan.
"The system from the past has backfired, but it is still within the plan," the deity knew that true believers were not the nobles, who held more fear than faith for the gods. To find true believers, one could not look among the nobles or priests; they were merely the guardians and shepherds of the gods, not part of the faith.
The true believers were the poorest of the poor and the peasants.
However, the divine guards and attendants were not pleased. Due to the prevailing attitudes, they naturally looked down on peasants and serfs, even if they themselves had once been in that position before their deaths. Now, they were the noble servants of the God of Holy Light.
Thus, descending into the bodies of peasants and serfs was a great insult to them.
The deity also noticed this and began to adjust the souls of these believers.
'As expected, the feedback from the divine offices has come. Even with the mind protection techniques I used to ensure my own mind was not distorted by the faith, the souls of these believers cannot withstand it.'
'But I can only make do for now. This was not meant for dealing with internal issues.'
'Unexpectedly, the internal threat erupted first. According to the high-dimensional divine kingdom's computer simulations, the stagnant mode would not lead to a population surge and subsequent change for at least another million years. It seems a formidable existence has appeared in this generation.'
'But it is too early, far too early, even before I am ready.'
From the beginning, the divine guards, attendants, and servants created by the God of Holy Light were not designed to handle internal threats, so they did not have the necessary mechanisms for divine descent.
But now, they had no choice but to try.
As for letting the Holy Light Church handle it? That was impossible. In terms of faith, they were clearly unqualified. However, the God of Holy Light was satisfied with their ability to consolidate faith.
He had no worry about a lack of faith to develop his divine kingdom, which is why he allowed the internal faith issues within the Holy Light Church to persist.
In his eyes, how much faith could the Holy Light Church produce? The true sources of faith were the billions of ordinary people, many of whom were fanatics. The extraordinary beings within the church did not provide more faith; they only needed to manage the ordinary people who produced faith.
Like factory supervisors, they might not be as efficient as the workers in tightening screws, but they could ensure the workers did their job more efficiently.
The supervisors' personal lives were of no concern to the boss, as long as they worked diligently. Whether they went clubbing or had a barbecue after work, or occasionally sold some unwanted paper for extra income, the boss would turn a blind eye.
The entire church's operation was designed to collect faith and recruit soldiers for the gods, not for salvation.
If the world were truly as described in the holy texts of the gods, it would not be in such a stagnant state.
"Divine descent! Eliminate the heretics!" the deity commanded again.
Finally, based on the faith of the gods, the divine guards and servants began their descent, choosing only the faithful peasants and serfs.
Compared to the extraordinary priests, these peasants and serfs, though more compatible due to their deep faith, required time to recover their strength.
'I need to investigate the mental reactions of the other gods. I hope their mental protection systems have not failed over the years. If they have been assimilated by their divine offices, that would be disastrous.'
