Chapter 425: Navy?
Chapter 425: Navy?
Kuro had his reasons.
He genuinely didn’t want to stay in Shabondy. This cursed place wasn’t just swarming with pirates trying to breakthrough to the New World—it also meant dealing with the World Nobles. Such a hassle! Why not stay in the West Blue where life was far more pleasant?
Better yet, he could stir up trouble here to annoy the higher-ups, making them see him as a nuisance in Shabondy. If he played his cards right, they’d transfer him away permanently—ideally to the Four Seas, never returning to the Grand Line.
By normal standards, any Navy officer not stationed in the Grand Line wasn’t considered top-tier. The upper echelons punished Navy officers by exiling them from the Grand Line to the Four Seas. That was exactly what Kuro wanted.
He casually picked up the Transponder Snail beside him. “Let’s start now. No time to waste.”
Dialing Marineford’s number, he waited.
The Transponder Snail clicked and connected instantly.
“Hello, this is Marineford. Vice Admiral Storbery speaking.”
The snail’s surface shimmered, displaying a man with a tall, conical hat and a long, straight beard.
“Storbery?”
Kuro paused. “It’s Kuro. Brother, you’re in charge now?”
“Oh, Kuro! Yes, I’ve taken over Marineford. Fleet Admiral Akainu proceeded to the New World after you left. He left orders—the command of Marineford is half yours. Let’s cooperate well from now on.” The Transponder Snail emitted a warm chuckle.
“If it’s you, Brother, this’ll be easy. I need to deploy three thousand Navy troops to Shabondy to cleanse the current mess.” Kuro stated bluntly.
They’d once served under the same commander. Though Vice Admirals operated independently after reaching their rank, factional ties remained. Being in the same camp made things simple.
“How many do you need?” Storbery asked.
“Three thousand. Send four Capital Ships.”
“Understood. I’ll arrange the transfer. They’ll arrive in half a day.”
Storbery grinned. “Come visit when you’re free. We’ve got much to talk about.”
“Definitely. Talk later.”
Kuro hung up, nodding at Lida and Klah. “Done.”
He exhaled a puff of smoke. “Let’s see if the higher-ups don’t notice when three thousand Navy troops storm Shabondy. I’ll make sure they can’t tolerate my presence here anymore.”
Whether they’d tolerate him or not, he despised Shabondy’s environment. Even if his transfer didn’t go through, cleaning up the place a little wouldn’t hurt.
Marineford was only half a day from Shabondy—plenty fast enough.
This would be over quickly.
Marineford.
“Three thousand Navy troops.”
Storbery stroked his beard, smiling. “Kuro still has that sense of Responsibility. Eager to fix Shabondy’s problems first, huh?”
Everyone knew what happened in the Shabondy Archipelago, but no one could intervene. Vice Admirals like him had their own bases and duties. Without Headquarters’ orders, they wouldn’t rashly proceed to Shabondy.
Besides, compared to local Navy forces, their sudden arrival wouldn’t uncover much.
With the recent rights transition period, they had even less bandwidth.
But hadn’t Fleet Admiral Akainu sent Kuro there precisely to clean up Shabondy?
Kuro was proving his worth—taking bold action the moment he arrived.
“As your senior, of course I’ll support you.” Storbery chuckled, issuing orders.
Marineford’s Navy numbered only around eight thousand. Sending over three thousand—nearly a third of their forces—would be a stretch for anyone else. But for Kuro? Absolutely. Even without his shared command authority, Storbery would still back him.
Kuro was their faction’s pride—a Navy officer worth mentioning even among the entire Navy.
…
Shabondy Archipelago, Area 30.
32GR.
A young girl sprinted down the park’s street.
Her clothes were dust-covered, her cheeks and arms scarred. Crimson hair flowed behind her, though violently tugged into disarray. Two streaks of residual energy traced her face like unshed tears.
She burst into a crowded area, shouting, “Help me! Please help!!”
People turned, but seeing her plight, those farther away fled instantly. Those nearby knelt, heads bowed, too terrified to look up.
Not far behind, a giant crawled slowly on all fours, carrying a man atop him.
The man’s hair curled upward, his face fat and slobbery. His thick, pig-like lips drooled as he called, “Don’t run! I’ll shoot if you do! Slave, don’t run!”
“Unbelievable! Even a young girl—”
A man started to protest but was yanked back by his companion.
“Shut up! You’ll get us killed! That’s Young Noble Charloss!”
The reason? The man wore a transparent helmet—a signature of the World Nobles. Untouchable.
“Don’t run! Red hair like fire—it’s rare!”
Charloss drawled like an idiot. “I want you as my slave! Don’t run!”
“Damn it, can’t you move faster, useless slave!” He yanked the chain around the giant’s neck. “Faster, slow slave!”
The giant gritted his teeth, quickening his pace slightly. The shift jostled Charloss, who scowled, pulling out a golden Pistol.
“Stupid slave! You made me lose balance!”
Bang!
A bullet struck the giant’s back, splattering blood. He stumbled forward, collapsing.
“Move, slave!”
Bang! Bang! Bang!
Charloss fired multiple shots into his back, slapping him angrily. “Move faster, useless slave! I want that red-haired girl as my slave!”
When the giant stopped moving, Charloss pointed at the girl. “You! Get her! I’m tired of chasing!”
Behind him, armed soldiers and two men in black dress uniforms stood. They exchanged glances. One stepped forward.
“Shave.”
In an instant, he appeared before the fleeing girl. She crashed into him, nose bleeding, falling backward.
“Girl, you’ve caught the eye of the World Nobility. Don’t resist.” The black-clad man told Shanks.
“Help me! Please!”
Her nose stung, tears streaming as she screamed to the crowd. “Please help me!”
Those she looked at turned away, silent.
One man almost stood but bowed his head lower, swallowing his guilt.
No one dared defy the World Nobles.
“Help ME!!!”
The girl’s cries grew louder, but the crowd’s heads lowered further.
The black-clad man hesitated briefly—less than a second—before reaching out.
“Stop struggling. The World Nobles are untouchable.”
His hand clamped around her wrist, dragging her toward Charloss.
“No! I won’t! I won’t!!”
Tears flooded her eyes. “Fathermother said… if this happened… I… I would…”
Her gaze hardened. Teeth bared, she aimed to bite her tongue.
Bang!!
A massive rock flew from nowhere, slamming into the black-clad man and sending him flying.
“Oh my, what bad luck! A rock?”
Footsteps echoed as a group approached.
Navy officers in crisp uniforms, backs straight.
Leading them was a man in golden dress uniform, his Navy-issued cloak billowing. A cigar hung from his lips. He approached the girl, saying, “Little girl, it’s getting dark. Go home for dinner.”
Shanks froze, staring at him. The sunset lit his side, making the golden uniform glow like fire.
“Navy?” she whispered.
